Most believable acting?

I think the most believable, not necessarily the most acclaimed acting, comes from people who are either exactly like that character in real life or very much capable of it. The Streep, DiCaprio and Day-lewis types are fun to watch, but often look like they're acting. I guess it's like apples and oranges.

Helena Bonham Carter Exits ‘The White Lotus’ Season 4 Cast

After being announced as part of the cast for the upcoming fourth season of The White Lotus, Helena Bonham Carter has departed the project, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

“With filming just underway on season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set,” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement shared with THR. “The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks. HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”

Production on season four of the Mike White created series recently kicked off in France, and will notably be set during the Cannes Film Festival. The two-time Oscar nominee was an early announced addition to the show’s cast, joining the show’s slate with an extensive résumé of prior projects.

Carter’s Academy Award nods hailing from her performances in The King’s Speech and The Wings of the Dove. Her additional film credits include additional film credits include Fight Club (1999); the Harry Potter franchise; Novocaine (2001); Planet of the Apes (2001); Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005); Corpse Bride (2005); and Enola Holmes (2020). She also appeared in Netflix’s The Crown as Princess Margaret.

The U.S. national debt now exceeds 100% of gross domestic product, crossing a once-unthinkable threshold, on the way toward breaking the record set in the wake of World War II. As of March 31, the country’s publicly held debt was $31.265 trillion, while GDP over the preceding year was $31.216 trillion, according to data released Thursday. That puts the ratio at 100.2%, compared with 99.5% when the last fiscal year ended Sept. 30. That figure will likely climb for the foreseeable future because the federal government is running historically large annual deficits of nearly 6% of GDP, which add to the debt.

The government is spending $1.33 for every dollar it collects in revenue, and the budget deficit this year is projected at $1.9 trillion.

The Bette Davis oscar debacle

This got so much publicity at the time, as Bette felt like she was set up by the producers to look like a senile old lady. I believe she even held a press conference afterwards and slammed the academy awards. Sadly, she never got another chance to appear on the show.

Looking at it now, it wasn't the fuck up that it was made out to be. Why didn't they just let Robert Wise speak after Bette praised Paul instead of just rushing to the orchestra? So much technical confusion going on, and it didn't have to be this way.

PS Bette looks sensational. This is arguably the best she ever looked post stroke.

DeSantis Paid 7 consultants over $300K each to produce false reports about trans healthcare

Gov. Ron DeSantis' administration has authorized more than $1.3 million for legal and expert-witness fees in the state's effort to ban Medicaid coverage of treatments for transgender people, a review of state records by The News Service of Florida shows.

The state agency in July issued a nearly $1 million contract for legal services and costs in the litigation.

According to state records, the DeSantis administration also was willing to pay up to $322,323 for "expert witness" services from seven doctors and researchers who contributed to an AHCA report or appeared at a public hearing on the issue. The researchers received a total of $42,621.83 through purchase orders issued between May and August last year.

Many of the state's experts are affiliated with religious organizations or have endorsed "conversion therapy," which seeks to change sexual or gender identities of LGBTQ people. The practice has been discredited by major parts of the medical community.

The state's highest-paid expert, California-based family physician Andre Van Mol, received $15,104.55 out of an approved total of nearly $70,000 for his advice. Van Mol has written extensively on treatment for gender dysphoria for groups such as the Christian Medical & Dental Associations. Van Mol also serves on the board of Moral Revolution, a group self-described on its website as "a team of passionate individuals who are called to promote God's original design for sexuality."

The state agency paid Quentin Van Meter, an Atlanta-based pediatric endocrinologist, $12,417.28 in July, the records show. Van Meter is board president of the American College of Pediatricians, which says on its website that "transgender interventions harm children." That group is different from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which supports gender-affirming care.

Poor Rocco has a lot on his plate.

Everything seemed great when his comatose mother reentered his life, only for him to soon learn that he came into this world through another vaginal canal, by way of Dr. Britt Westbourne.

Why are so many gay men so picky when it comes to dating and relationships?

I used to belong to this Facebook group for gay men over 40, and they bitched endlessly about how hard dating is in the gay world, and how horrible other gay men are, and how they’re so tired of being lonely, but they can’t find anybody decent because all the men out there are jerks.

And the same people men would just complain about every little thing, and every little issue was a dealbreaker for relationships. And I pointed out to some of these people that they complain about being alone, but they cannot handle even the tiniest flaw. And I remember somebody responding to me and saying “I refuse to settle.”

These people sound demented. Nobody is perfect. My partner is not perfect, and he drives me crazy sometimes, but I’m also not perfect and I drive him crazy sometimes, but for the most part we get along. I’m not saying that anybody should settle for a terrible relationship, but that doesn’t mean you throw somebody out the door just because they’re a half an inch too short for your preference.

Aziz Ansari, the attorney for the disgraced congressman, confirmed the 45-year-old had extramarital contact with “women,” but insisted the relationships were ”consensual” while ”categorically and unequivocally” denying allegations of sexual misconduct and assault.

“He had extramarital contact with women. He’s not denying that,” Swalwell’s attorney told CNN. “But that’s very different than engaging in nonconsensual sexual misconduct.”

The former Democratic rising star was even known to hold work meetings at a local Hooters in Dublin, California when he first ran for Congress in 2012 — which allegedly creeped out colleagues.

“I hope he stops meeting at Hooters,” Cheri Greven, his former political director thought at the time, according to CNN.

Swalwell has reportedly continued messaging women on Snapchat after his resignation from Congress — confronting one over why she had screenshotted his “snap,” according to one such message seen by CNN.

Havoc (2005)

Does anyone else remember this movie? This was Anne Hathaway,'s attempt to prove she was more than a Disney actress. A lot of actors/actresses do similar things, but this was a pretty big 180 - especially compared to today. The movie is pretty cringey. Anne refused to promote it at the time because it was "taken away" from the director. The movie wás dumped on video after sitting here on the shelf for awhile. J feel like Anne was probably embarrassed by it, which would've added to her refusing to promote it. Had she known Brokeback Mountain was right around the corner, she probably would not have done it.

I think clips float around tiktok consistently.

Kind of so-bad-it's-good. I would give anything to hear Anne talk about the movie today.

‘Marty Supreme’- they deserve ALL the Oscars

What a delightful, powerful little Safdie film. Please watch this (if you’re a mature adult).

I finally watched it and I loved the movie. It’s part family drama, partly about the creative process, partly about generational trauma and partly about the way one sport can hold so many memories and experiences for us, and mean so much to us (in this case, ping pong that’s been popular for generations now).

Timothée Chalamet is so good I don’t see how he could lose the Oscar. He gives such a lovely performance from his first scene all the way to the end. Kevin O’Leary is absolutely remarkable and Odessa A’zion gives my favorite performance in the film. Gwyneth Paltrow is good but she’s the weakest link in the movie.

A wonderful film.

NYT: Patel Sues The Atlantic Over Excess Drinking Article

The F.B.I. director Kash Patel sued The Atlantic, accusing it of defamation on Monday over an article that claimed that his excessive drinking and unexplained absences were putting his job in jeopardy.

The article, under the headline “The FBI Director Is MIA,” was published on Friday and detailed Mr. Patel’s behavior in his role leading the F.B.I., citing more than two dozen anonymous sources. The author, Sarah Fitzpatrick, wrote that Mr. Patel’s conduct had “often alarmed officials at the F.B.I. and the Department of Justice.” The article said he “has also earned a reputation for acting impulsively during high-stakes investigations.”

Mr. Patel denied the claims in a statement to The Atlantic, which was included in the article.

The White House also denied the claims, with Karoline Leavitt, its press secretary, telling The Atlantic that “Director Patel remains a critical player on the administration’s law and order team.”

Mr. Patel immediately began threatening a lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against both The Atlantic and Ms. Fitzpatrick. The suit seeks $250 million in damages.

A spokeswoman for the The Atlantic said on Monday that the publication stood by its reporting. “We will vigorously defend The Atlantic and our journalists against this meritless lawsuit,” she said in a statement.

In his complaint, Mr. Patel accused the defendants of “publishing an article replete with false and obviously fabricated allegations designed to destroy Director Patel’s reputation and drive him from office.” He pushed back on allegations that he “drinks to the point of obvious intoxication” at places like the members-only clubs Ned’s in Washington and the Poodle Room in Las Vegas.

“Director Patel does not drink to excess at these establishments or anywhere else, and this has not, and has never been, a source of concern across the government,” the complaint said.

Mr. Patel also said in the suit that The Atlantic had published the article “despite being expressly warned, hours before publication, that the central allegations were categorically false.”

He said in his suit that the F.B.I. had been given less than two hours to comment on a list of 19 claims provided by The Atlantic, and that his legal counsel had sent the publication a letter refuting the claims, asking for more time to respond and demanding that the article not be published.

Mr. Patel, as a public figure, must meet a higher standard than an ordinary citizen to prove his case. He must show there were not only falsehoods in the article, but “actual malice” — a legal standard that means that the defendants published defamatory material either while knowing it was false or with reckless disregard as to its truth.

The lawsuit is the latest in a series from the Trump administration against media outlets over unfavorable reporting. Last week, a federal judge dismissed President Trump’s complaint against The Wall Street Journal over a birthday message to the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, though Mr. Trump may refile that suit. The president has also filed lawsuits in recent months against The New York Times, the BBC, CNN and The Des Moines Register.

Jeremy Licht ('Valerie', 'Valerie's Family', 'Hogan Family') interview

On my podcast this morning, there was one of those 'entertainment interviews' with actor Jeremy Licht from the 80s sitcom with three incarnations: "Valerie", "Valerie's Family", "The Hogan Family". He's an interesting guest and tells what he saw happening on the show during all its troubles, while being a ratings success.

He claims that until "Friends" came along a decade later, the cast of 'Valerie' was one of - if not the only - highest paid cast in television back then. The network originally passed on the project after viewing the pilot, but a year later decided to pick it up, never expecting it to be a major hit. He believes Harper was the one who fought for the cast to be the 'highest paid' from the beginning because she knew it would be a hit.

He joined the show at 14, playing one of the 'twin boys' of Valerie Harper, and though it strange they cast a Latino actor to play his 'twin' (Licht is not Latino). But the audience bought into it, so the producers seemed to know what they were doing (even though it didn't make sense to the two young actors). He and the other actor (Danny Ponce) are best friends to this day. The two guys keep in touch with Jason Bateman, but they're not really close friends with him.

He loved working with Valerie Harper - absolutely adored her. Said she was one of the nicest actresses he ever worked with and learned a lot from her. No one in the cast knew exactly what was going on when she didn't show up for work at the start of the third season, and there were a lot of rumors. He was called to the set to do new opening shots for the 'credits' and Harper was not with the cast. They were told a few days later she was probably not returning to the show. The cast was shocked when they read a script later on which referenced 'Valerie Hogan' being killed in an auto accident, and 'Aunt Sandy' would be staying with them.

Sandy Duncan joined the cast, and kept telling everyone for quite a while that she was not there to 'replace Valerie', she was there playing a new character because she needed a job to make money. They got along well with her, though she had a different way of doing things than Harper, and they had to get used to it.

He barely saw actor Josh Taylor on the set until the third season when Duncan took over the female lead. He indicated he never really got the chance to 'know him' rather than just 'work with him'.

He's been doing a lot of interviews lately. Here's a link to one of them, but it's not the 20 minute podcast interview I came across in the car (I can't find that one on YT). I haven't heard this one yet, but I have a feeling it's probably the same information (this interview is much longer).

Diana Ross' Second Tenure at Motown (1989 -1999)

On May 4, 1999, singer Diana Ross released 'Every Day Is A New Day', which would be her last album recorded during her second tenure at Motown. The album was a major flop in the US peaking at #108 on the Hot 200 Albums Chart, despite heavy promotion by the label and Ross herself. Promotion included a tie-in to the TV-movie 'Double Platinum' (during the week of the album's release) starring Ross and (then popular) singer Brandy, in which they performed several of the songs on Ross' new album. She did not re-sign with Motown after the release of the album, and has gone without a major record label contract since then (she has released a handful of recordings under independent labels).

Ross' first tenure with Motown was from 1961 -1981, under label founder Berry Gordy. She was the lead singer of 'The Supremes' scoring #1 albums and singles, until January, 1970. Gordy then launched her into a successful solo career as a singer, actress, and liv-performance entertainer. From 1970 -81, she starred in three Hollywood movies, performed sold-out concerts around the world, and hit the top of the Billboard charts with her singles and solo albums.

When her contract was up in early 1981, Ross was offered a record-breaking $20M deal with RCA for six studio albums in the 80s. She was also given total control of her projects, where she made every decision on each album with no interference by RCA (something she never had at Motown). Her tenure at RCA was a mixed bag, as she started off successfully but dwindled steadily by her third album. After she delivered her sixth album in 1987 which flopped, RCA decided not to renew her contract.

In 1988, she went back to Gordy to talk about returning to Motown. However, Gordy was in the process of selling the label to MCA, which Ross was against. He ended up working out a deal for Ross' return when he sold the company in June, 1988. Following the sale of the company, Ross returned to the Motown label with the condition that she have shares in the company as a part-owner.

Her first album under her return to Motown was 'Workin' Overtime', released in June, 1989. It was panned by critics - from the cover art to the choice of 'New Jack' and 'Hip Hop' music. The 45 year old was accused of trying to imitate the (then) successful music and image of Janet Jackson, who was 22 years her junior. The album flopped and raked over the coals in reviews. AllMusic editor Ron Wynn wrote that "this album was the first product of that new contract, and the results weren't very encouraging. There were no moderate or even small hits, and the album quickly dropped off both the R&B and pop charts within a couple of weeks of its release. Ross sounded completely lost, and the production, arrangements, and compositions sounded weak and thin next to the dominant New Jack and hip-hop works." The album peaked at #116 on the Hot 200 Albums.

Her second release for Motown was 1991's "The Force Behind The Power", another R&B flop for Ross in the US, peaking at #102 on the Albums Chart, and having no charting singles on the pop charts. (It did much better in the UK, under the EMI label).

Her third release under Motown was "Take Me Higher' released in 1995. The album got mostly negative reviews, with NME critic Keith Cameron argued that the album's contemporary production "nullif[ies]" Ross's distinctive voice and leaves the album lacking substance. He contended that her attempt to sound modern results in her being "drown[ed] in [...] digital vats," and concludes that the record is an uneven effort, with Ross most effective only when she "sounds like herself." It peaked at #114 on the Hot 200 Albums Chart.

Her last release was 'Every Day Is A New Day', which has been mentioned earlier, peaking at #108. Motown and Ross parted ways after this, not renewing her contract.

One thing I've noticed is that up until the 2010s, an actor/actress would get paranoid after one high profile flop and more than one could genuinely damage your career. Now, it doesn't seem to matter. Once you're big, you seem you seem to stay there. Even not-so-talented people like Dakota Johnson can survive massive embarrassments like Madam Web. I think the fact that these actors/actresses have about a zillion side gigs and/or a relentless PR machine backing them is a major factor.

I clicked on it, because I thought the headline was interesting. It was the usual bashing of the "elite" and how out of touch celebrities are with the common folk. But halfway through the article, the author makes a comment about Bezos and Trump that makes me believe he's either a hypocritical, if not jealous right-winger or someone who doesn't understand American politics and/or just super cynical about it. The dispute over the validity of the claims and Rana's credibility only fueled public speculation over the past week, with podcasters like Joe Rogan and Megyn Kelly opining about what really happened.

JPMorgan's offer to settle for $1 million, equivalent to less than two years of his compensation at the bank, was aimed at avoiding all of that, but Rana rejected it and asked for more money, the people said.

In a statement, a JPMorgan spokesman said "We did try to reach an agreement to avoid the time and expense of litigation and to support an employee who was being threatened with the very reputational harm now unfolding. We continue to believe these allegations have no merit and new information raised as a result of the public filing only reinforces that conclusion."

When HIPAA Requires Sharing

When a relative couldn't find his insurance card and simply asked his longtime doctor's office for his own member number, they informed him that it would be a HIPAA violation for them to tell him. This seemed strange to me, their not being able to share a person's own information with that person, and so I looked into it.

They were in error, and indeed it is a HIPAA violation [italic]not[/italic] to share such information with the very person the information is about. This is little-known, and I thought it might prove useful to others to know, hence this posting. To give more detailed information:

While HIPAA is often associated with protecting privacy, it also enables and encourages sharing information for treatment, payment, and health care operations, including sharing with the patient. A patient has a right to their own information, including insurance billing records, under 45 CFR § 164.524. Under HIPAA rules, doctors' offices and health plans are required to share a patient's protected health information (PHI)—which includes insurance details used for payment—with the patient upon request. HIPAA mandates that individuals have the right to access, inspect, and obtain copies of their own medical and billing records held by covered entities.

Key Aspects of Patient Access to Information: Mandatory Disclosure: If a patient asks for their insurance information, the provider must disclose it, as this falls under the patient’s right to access their own data. Information Included: This covers records related to billing, claims, and coverage, not just clinical notes.

Right to Access: Under HIPAA, patients have a right to access their protected health information (PHI), including insurance details used for payment, under 45 CFR § 164.524 (Access of Individuals to PHI). Providers must share this information upon request, as insurance data constitutes part of the designated record set used to make decisions about individuals. The exceptions to such sharing are very few, of the nature of the likes of not sharing a psychiatrist's notes with the patient. The Privacy Rule ensures patients can review and receive copies of their records, ensuring transparency in their care and payment. If a provider refuses, the patient can file a complaint with the HHS Office for Civil Rights (OCR).

Specific HIPAA Rules and Language: Access Right (45 CFR § 164.524): Patients have the right to inspect and obtain a copy of their PHI. Insurance information (payment records) falls under PHI.

Documentation and Billing: Providers must provide access to records containing insurance information when requested by the patient.

Some might wish to print out the above information, having as it does HIPAA document citation numbers, and to keep it on hand in case at some point some ill-informed or lazy medical office refuses your request and you need to inform them that their refusal is itself a HIPAA violation.

Noisy Neighbors

About eight years ago, a woman in her late 20s-early 30s moved into the condo below mine. (I live close to a big city in a suburban area.) The place has always been quiet.. Lived here over 20 years, am now in my late 60s. The woman, a teacher, was mostly quiet, though she had some parties. She acquired a boyfriend, a construction worker. He had a big dog. The dog barked nonstop when they weren't home. Someone else must have complained, because they got a shock collar for the dog.

Then they had a kid. This kid has been really loud as soon as the age some kids get loud. He screams, hollers, cries, runs around with very loud steps. I can't stay home on weekends because I get a headache. I never heard a kid make so much noise.

The people are "nice" and are friendly and the guy even gave me a jump start when my car battery died. Sometimes they pre-emptively say things about the kid being too loud, when they see me. But they don't seem to ever take him out very much, or know how to keep him quiet. This is a "luxury condo" supposedly but they make it seem more like a tenement. I don't want to move, this was supposed to be my retirement home (though I'm still working.) Any advice?

I had my first injection of Ozempic this morning

The second film adaptation of "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson (after Robert Wise's 1963 masterpiece), this big-budget reimagining from the director of none other than "Speed" and "Twister" was savaged by critics, and audiences didn't like it much either. As a younger millennial, it was one of the earliest horror films I saw as a kid, and there's a certain nostalgia I have for it. The cast is impressive, though Lili Taylor (who is usually excellent) gives an oftentimes bizarre performance here. The special effects veer into the realm of utterly outrageous and even laughable, but the film's set design remains unlike anything I've ever seen in a film before or since—the atmosphere is just off the charts. I think it's worth watching for this reason alone.

Ghost World

I rewatched Ghost World for the first time in a decade and it hits harder than it did when it came out; when, like Enid, I was a teenager messily stumbling into adulthood.

She puts on What Do I Get by The Buzzcocks and briefly dyes her hair an “obvious, 1977 original punk rock look” until she is roundly mocked by a record store worker.

I’m not sure what the equivalent today of taking on a 23-year-old anti-fashion persona. I don’t think it’s possible. A young Enid in 2026 ironically dressing like t.a.T.u. or Avril Lavigne or dying her hair with Kelly Clarkson tiger stripes would be like any other wannabe influencer.

Anti-Anxiety Medication Recommendation

I would, in all seriousness, like to hear from the DL universe about a recommendation for anti-anxiety meds. My mother's side of the family has a genetic history of mental issues: My maternal grandmother blew her head off with a shotgun on Christmas Day when my mom was only 10. My mom's brother, my uncle, never recovered from this and was an alcoholic all his life until his doctor told him he had to choose between booze and living, and he then also put a gun to his head and ended his life. My brother drank himself to death in his 40s. He had drained all of us financially and never stopped drinking until one day he keeled over from the various scripts he has stashed away; we had made the tough decision to keep him at a distance, and the only way we found out he had died was several days later when his body fluids started to seep through his first-floor apartment into the shared basement. My father did us all the great favor of dying from colon cancer in his 50s after three decades of emotional and physical abuse. My other brother, a binge alcoholic, died of COVID in the first round of the epidemic; he wasn't anti-vax but he was afraid of the side effects of the vaccination: he ended up in ICU on a respirator with congested legs and lungs and his kids, my nephews, were left with the agonizing decision to turn off his life supports. I am literally the last man standing. In the decade from 1983-1993 every one of my friends died of AIDS except five of us. But I intend to remain upright until I die at 94 while listening to the overture to "Gypsy" while being spoon-fed pesto and lobster tail and vanilla icing birthday cake by two blonde muscle-bound massage therapists, thank you very much. This is my history.

My wonderful doctor who has treated me for 30 years just retired and I see my new doc on Tuesday. Here's the issue. I took Lorazepam 5mg. once or twice a day for at least 20 years until it was proven beyond a doubt that it leads to dementia. I can vouch for that as my mom was addicted to Lorazepam and died of dementia-related issues at the age of 90, although otherwise she was perfectly healthy. I had a fabulous Great Aunt who took a Librium once a day along with her black coffee and unfiltered Lucky Strikes. And another wonderful Great Aunt who used to Xerox me dirty jokes she would hear at her bridge club and always kept a stash of Valium near her. Those great dames of that generation who lived through the Great Depression were wonderful!! I used to play three-handed pinochle with them, and they were absolutely no-mercy cutthroat, all the time cussing away and telling hilarious dirty jokes. A favorite that reduced them to tears: Did you hear about the cock-eyed seamstress? Poor dear, she couldn't mendstraight. This, from 80-plus year-old ladies. And another to fellow bridge club blue-haired ladies: You know dear, I heard that you were cruel to animals, and if you are not then why are you sitting on your pussy?

My doctor took me off Lorazepam and put me on Buspirone: I can take 5mg tablets as much as three times a day, and I can vouch that it does squat. Is there anything else out there anyone can recommend from personal experience? Do they even prescribe old-time meds like Librium and Valium anymore? Because I can tell you that a friend once gave me one of his Valium pills and it was great. Maybe too great? I plan to ask my new doc if there are any other meds out there for anxiety but maybe you can recommend something. Please be serious and kind. And, I might add, as an impetus to see my new doc: Reports are coming in that he is quite the dish.

I've been laid up with the flu for the past week and have gone down the YouTube rabbit hole watching police bodycam videos, everything from DUI arrests to drunks getting kicked out of bars to ex-girlfriends stalking their ex-boyfriends. Most of the videos are hilarious (and most take place in Floriduh, of course), and I love how all the people who get arrested inevitably shriek, "I didn't do anything!" as the handcuffs are placed on them. Cape Fear TV series

No trailer yet, but I'm kind of looking forward to this. Premieres this June. The two movies are pretty well regarded. Though, some criticize the remake for being too OTT or daring to make the family super dysfunctional (for me, that's what made it interesting). I want them to go even further with the moral murkiness in this one. I hope Amy Adams is playing the lawyer or at least give the wife a bigger role. Javier Bardem as Max Cady is solid casting as well.

Beef - Season 2 Premieres in April

I cannot wait-

I was rewatching Beef Season 1 on Netflix and it is utterly fantastic- And surprisingly great upon re-watch.

I have never seen an entire cast that I wanted to hug and kiss- they are all so adorable. (I guess I dig asians as well as Maria Bello)

And they were expertly cast- Every one of them was fantastic.

I have a hard time believing Season 2 will be as good despite starring Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac-

I come from a family of alcoholics on both sides (but was adopted, so didn't grow up around the dysfunction). In my 20s I developed a serious drinking problem but finally gave it up for good weeks before I turned 28. Over the years, I have known a number of alcoholics and addicts. In a lot of cases, I suspect an underlying personality disorder. I suppose it's a chicken-and-egg problem.

Electrical Fire Closes ‘Book of Mormon’ Theater Indefinitely ​ The New York Fire Department said there was “substantial damage” to a room containing lighting equipment at the Eugene O’Neill Theater in Manhattan.

“The Book of Mormon,” one of Broadway’s biggest juggernauts, will be forced to close for an unknown period of time after an electrical fire on Monday morning caused significant damage to the Eugene O’Neill Theater, where the musical has run for the last 15 years.

“The building is going to be out of service, pending repairs,” said David Simms, an assistant chief at the New York Fire Department. “There’s been substantial damage on the fourth floor, in the electrical room, which contains lighting equipment and hanging chandeliers.”

In a joint statement, “The Book of Mormon” and the theater’s owner, Ambassador Theater Group, said they would “take time to assess the extent of the damage, and any news of disruption to performances will be announced as soon as possible.”

Simms said one firefighter, after sustaining minor injuries, had been transported to a hospital. He added that “all theater personnel are accounted for.” (“The Book of Mormon,” like much of Broadway, is dark on Mondays.)

Simms said that the Fire Department was notified of a fire at the theater, which is on West 49th Street in Midtown Manhattan, at 10 a.m. on Monday, and that the fire was in an electrical room between the fourth and fifth floors. He said that more fire was then discovered between the fifth floor and the theater’s roof.

“This was a deep-seated fire, involving a lot of electrical equipment,” Simms said. “It was very difficult to get to. There was a lot of catwalks and rigging in the theater.”

The three-alarm fire, which was declared under control at 12:17 p.m., prompted a sizable response — 192 firefighters and emergency medical workers.

Simms said that there had been “some water damage” and that the structure would need to be inspected by the city’s Department of Buildings. He said a theatergoer would not be able to see the damage because it was “in the back area.”

The cause of the fire was under investigation, Simms added.

Luis Geraldo, who works at a parking garage across the street from the theater, said he had noticed black smoke coming out of the building as the fire began.

DL Fav and Days of our Lives star Patrick Muldoon is DEAD TO ME

Actor and producer Patrick Muldoon, known for his roles in the daytime drama Day of Our Lives, primetime soap Melrose Place and movie Starship Troopers, died suddenly this morning, April 19, following a heart attack. He was 57.

Born in San Pedro, California, Muldoon graduated from USC where he played on the Trojans football team.

He started his acting career while still in college with a two-episode arc on the sitcom Who’s the Boss? Shortly after his 1991 graduation, he landed a three-episode recurring role on Saved By the Bell.

Muldoon originated the role of Austin Reed on Days of Our Lives, which he played from 1992-95 and again from 2011-12. He also recurred on Melrose Place as the villainous Richard Hart from Season 3-5 and starred in a slew of TV movies in the late 1990s and 2000s.

You’ve surely seen them: the packs of 20-somethings stalking the sidewalks of Manhattan in button-down shirts and vests embroidered with the name of an investment bank. Or perhaps you’ve stood behind them in line at a coffee shop, counting the minutes as they order a matcha latte with oat milk. Maybe you’ve listened to them discuss their punishing Pilates regimen, or the amazing Wagyu short ribs they ate last night. The status signifiers may have changed, but these eager knowledge workers are best understood as yuppies. Short for “young urban professional,” the term can be traced back to the 1980s, when it was used to describe a new cohort arriving in cities: the bankers and lawyers who earned high salaries, coveted loft apartments, trained for marathons, owned Cuisinarts and loved sushi, Brie, and chardonnay. The yuppies were both envied for their pleasures and derided as shallow, consumerist and status hungry. The word became a weapon: Across cities, phrases like “Die Yuppie Scum” were scrawled onto the sides of buildings. But perhaps we were too dismissive of the yuppies. So much of what we take for granted today — from our meritocratic rat race to our gentrified neighborhoods to our culture of overwork, fitness training and foodie obsession — was born in the yuppie-made 1980s. In that moment, they fashioned a bargain that we are still living with: An increasingly diverse professional class signed up for a life of hard-won affluence, at the cost of deep inequality for everyone else. Yuppies were called into being by the forces that were remaking the economy in the 1980s. After the Carter and Reagan administrations loosened the regulations governing Wall Street, finance began to generate a greater share of profits than manufacturing or services. Investment banks and law firms now shaped the fates of the corporations they had once served. As America hitched its fortunes to finance, those banks and firms began to chop up, spin off, merge, offshore or otherwise squeeze short-term value out of the nation’s legacy corporations. But to do it, they needed legions of employees to handle the grunt work: the proofreading, drafting and document review that kept the takeover machinery in motion.

Recommendation of great 1980s and 1990s movies

I am sorry if there has been the same request in the past, but I watched a terrific movie called “Without a Trace” wabout a missing child last it. It was from the 1980s. It didn’t have a massive budget or star JLo or some comic book movie cast. It was just an excellent story told very well.

In my experience, there aren’t movies very often that revolve around character studies with no special effects.

I am looking for a good movie to see and would love to read recommendations.

I finally watched Desperately Seeking Susan

I thought I should, seeing as how I've always heard of it and how it's considered one of Madonna's few good acting roles.

Good acting? Well, yes, I can see what people mean - she is just playing herself. And she seems quite fun in it. There were a few moments where I definitely felt like I could read her mind while acting as being: "walk here, pick up bag, turn around, walk back the other way", but I also thought she seemed fun in the dancing sequence or the diary sequence. She looked nice with a bit of fat on her too.

The movie, ehhh. It was just ok. It wasn't really a new idea (bored housewife yearns for adventure). You know, I think in the hands of a director better skilled in comedy it would've been fine though. It seemed kinda flat, there wasn't a lot of energy in it. The comedic parts were fine as written, just as directed they didn't always come off. As I said, the dance sequence was pretty good, but it needed to highlight the comedic nature of it more.

I loved Aiden Quinn's skinny, hairy body. Oh and we got side bum, mmm. I wish more leading men in today's films had that skinny/toned and hairy look, instead of everyone looking the same, hyper-muscular. I also thought the guy playing Jim was really cute too. I'll probably jerk off over them tonight. Much prefer the more real looking guys.

So yeah, that's done and dusted. I probably won't watch it again, but I didn't hate it. I thought Madonna got better as the movie progressed, and it kept my interest enough to not turn it off. God, the incidental music was very typically "latin"-inspired mid-80s huh? And who was that woman that was singing on TV when the security guard went to look for the guy following Roberta?

And yes, a magic show isn't really the best scenario for a finale, I don't think. I dunno, I felt like all the ideas were there but just executed wrong.

I didn't recognise Laurie Metcalf until almost the end.

Do others agree this is Madonna's best performance?

On March 23, the cast and creators of Love Story — chock full of scenes showing Carolyn Bessette (and less frequently, JFK Jr.) smoking back in the ’90s — celebrated the show’s success at the Chateau Marmont penthouse, where executive producer Ryan Murphy sat smiling next to Kaia Gerber, clad in a low-cut black dress with a cigarette held in her perfectly manicured hand.

A week earlier, the night before the Oscars, a writer who had just come from the Chanel and Charles Finch party at the Beverly Hills Hotel exclaimed, “Everyone was smoking there!”

And on a recent evening at private club The Living Room in Hollywood, cigarette smokers were scattered around the garden-like outdoor bar. No one appeared to bat an eye as they lit up.

Where there’s smoke, there’s smoking. A growing cohort of young celebs — from Heated Rivalry stars Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie to Addison Rae and I Love LA star-creator Rachel Sennott — have been photographed puffing at or holding old-school tobacco cigarettes, providing plenty of fodder for the Instagram account Cigfluencers, which chronicles famous contemporary smokers.

Dances With Wolves Actor Sentenced to Life In Prison for Sexual Assaulting Many....

Nathan Chasing Horse has been sentenced to life in prison for sexually assaulting Indigenous women and girls.

A Nevada judge gave the "Dances With Wolves" actor his sentence Monday. A jury had previously convicted him of 13 charges, mostly related to sexual assault. He was accused by three women, including one who was 14 when the assaults began. He was acquitted on some charges.

Accusers and their families told Judge Jessica Peterson they continue to suffer from the trauma caused by Chasing Horse and struggle with their faith after he exploited his position as a spiritual leader.

Chasing Horse, wearing his navy blue Clark County Detention Center uniform, stared straight ahead as victims read their statements. He denied the charges against him.

"This is a miscarriage of justice," he told the judge on Monday.

People say I'm not taking the short story competition seriously enough because the deadline is mid-May

.......and I haven't even started, but I guarantee my story will be better than all the stories that people spent years on. Writers overthink everything and re-write until it becomes dead, when in reality, as long as spelling and grammar errors are fixed, the first draft is often fine.

All the stories I read from the contest's previous winners and top tens have been dull as dishwater and are often about people having quiet, mawkish moments of reflection triggered by something mundane and sentimental, like seeing an old couple holding hands and wondering why your marriage didn't work, or feeling old when you see a group of young people laughing around town whilst you yourself are aged and weighed down with worry and responsibility.

What movie endings did you not like? (There be SPOILERS ahead)

Yes, feel free to dislike classic endings, but explain why.

I didn't like the ending of "Marty Supreme." I didn't like his character and didn't feel he earned that ending where he is all choked up and crying over the birth of his child.

I'm torn with "Little Shop of Horrors." The changed ending was abrupt, and Seymour got off for Mushnik's death, but the original ending just isn't funny and is just endless scenes of destruction.

"Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", due to the Hayes code, wraps it all up too neatly and doesn't quite resolve the conflict.

"We're Knot Done Yet" - KL podcast

Is anyone else following the 'We're Knot Done Yet' podcast which started this past Spring, and hosted by Knots Landing stars Donna Mills, Joan Van Ark and Michele Lee ? They also started broadcasting on YouTube back in September (WARNING: visuals of Joan Van Ark and Michele Lee may be disturbing for some viewers).

Overall, it's okay. Seven months in and it feels like they've talked about all they could possibly talk about regarding their time on the show, and what they wish to share about their private lives. The format is pretty simple:

The three hosts introduce themselves, and this gives Lee her chance to make a 'sex joke' of some kind, because they know how funny it is to hear (and barely understand) an 83 year old woman talk sex ! Very cutting edge. JVA reminds Lee they all 'love her', while Mills quickly wants to move on to the podcast.

The next twenty minutes is chatting about the show (JVA and Mills are interesting, while Lee derails every topic to talk about her and try to make everyone laugh). Sometimes they have a guest for the next 30 minutes, though not always connected to the show. Brian Austin Green, who was with the show from 1985-89 was very interesting. Lee doesn't like this part, because she can't usually steal the spotlight - they all ignore her and her improper outbursts.

They wrap the show (usually about thirty minutes long) by telling each other how much they love each other, and can't wait for next week. Hmm.

The most recent episode is where the three talk about their upcoming plans for the holidays. Mills reminded them that between Thanksgiving (she'll be spending it at her son-in-law's family's home) and Christmas (they're all going to Colorado), she has her big birthday coming up and they're all going to Hawaii to celebrate. (She doesn't say her age, but she turns 85 on Dec 11). JVA didn't offer much and indicated it was going to be a 'low key' holiday season for her and her family due to some 'family things' going on ( I hope it's not illness). Lee babbled on about something I couldn't understand (her dentures are awful).

Anyone here watching "Elsbeth"?

It's a spinoff of "The Good Fight," still one of the best series seen to date on a streaming channel, and itself a spinoff of "The Good Wife." The show just started its second season. Elsbeth is a "quirky" lawyer who's also a genius, played by the excellent Carrie Preston. It's always "Columbo"-style: they always start out showing the murder, and then Elsbeth solves it along with the NYPD. (She's working with a task force of sorts.) They usually have a recognizable actor playing the killer.

I'm mentioning it now because the season premiere is *right* up DL's alley: Nathan Lane is the main guest star, and the murder occurs due to what I can only describe as an etiquette-bitch meltdown, after a tall frau and her dudebro bf sit in front of him at a Broadway show, blocking his view & whining about needing to pee. Nathan has a *subscription*, goddammit! They pay dearly for their sins!

It's on Paramount+ if you have it, but also on CBS Thursday nights.

I recently got a job in a DIY store/garden centre, and there's one customer who I find very strange

She's been coming in for the past 6 weeks buying a single bag of soil every single day. She doesn't have a car, so waits every day outside for a cab. I couldn't understand why she doesn't just get them all delivered at once, or at least buy more than one each time so I asked my coworkers what her deal was, and they said she's been like this ever since she first turned up 3 years ago. It wasn't always soil, but they said she goes through phases where she keeps coming to the store daily to buy the same product. They said she bought the same budget drill for 3 weeks straight last year. The same Ironing board over and over again, plus other things like paintbrushes, door handles, jml products.

She doesn't seem aggressive or crazy, but there's obviously something going on with her. She isn't chatty and walks very fast, but is polite and not having public meltdowns.
