Ah, the world of stereotypes. The other day I was at the library and a young man (20-ish), wearing an anime shirt asked me what the Japanese characters on his shirt meant. I responded by saying that I was Chinese and not Japanese, nor do I read Japanese. He said "Oh, you look Asian, I figured you would know". Now, I am the last to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person, so I ignored him after that comment. I have a respectable job at a major bio-tech company, and I carry myself as a intelligent woman who knows want she wants in life. However, thanks to "looking asian" I some people see that as a sign that I am submissive at a drop of a hat, meek and possibly good at math. |
