Before the 50 Shades of Grey books, most "vanilla" folks thought BDSM was all about whips, chains, and dungeons. It IS that for some people, but that's certainly far from the truth for everyone in the lifestyle. The "lifestyle" simply refers to an alternate way of living in and/or out of the bedroom. It is commonly associated with BDSM which, in itself is very complex and can mean many different things. It can be a Dominant/submissive structure, it can mean kinky sexual exploration, it can mean...well you get the point. It takes time to get a feel for what the lifestyle entails.
Oh, and "vanilla" is an adjective applied to individuals who don't engage in BDSM or the kinky lifestyle and are more or less normal, traditional folks who think a little hair pulling or roleplaying is kinky. Maybe you learned something today :)
However, now that so many people (mostly women) have read the books about Christian & Ana, I've noticed a significant increase in people dipping their toes in the water out of curiosity. It's like the gym after new years when everyone joins to fulfill their resolution to lose weight and get into shape!
I've been in the lifestyle for over 10 years as what you could call a Christian Grey type. I'm a Dom, aka a Dominant, a Sir, or a Master, though I dislike the latter term. I started at a young age by simply reading what was out there, socializing, and asking questions to those who were more experienced. Gradually, I find my starting point in the lifestyle as a Dom. Over time, I found more specifically that I'm not just a dom but also a sadist with a soft, affectionate side, a teacher/mentor, and bondage enthusiast. I don't have a dungeon and often laugh at people who ask me about that :) I do, however, enjoy a certain degree of control and dominance over my partner, as well as exploring new things together and/or showing someone new "the ropes".
And finally, I'll say that I'm not at all someone you'd look at in public and think that I'm kinky. I have no tattoos , no piercings, and dress like your t-shirt and jeans kinda guy. When my last gf/submissive partner met me, she kept calling me a square :) That didn't last long...
Why am I posting the ad? I suppose I'm reaching out to those who are new and seek information on the lifestyle. There's much to learn and there are those out there who would take advantage of your naivete. Secondly, like-minded friends are in somewhat short supply and I'd enjoy making a few more :) Finally, I am open to, once we've talked and are on a friendly level with some chemistry established, discussing the possibilities of something more--whether that be training (dom or sub) or the pursuit of an actual romantic relationship.
