Introduction

Like many, I’ve usually kept my charitable giving private — and I’ve respected that choice in others. But recently, a few people have asked where they might consider donating. Since I don’t see a need to keep it to myself, I’ll share my recommendations for anyone interested.

I’ve organized this around a few themes. For each one I will link to the organization’s website and the Charity Navigator rating. For all of the organizations mentioned below, I respect them and I have personally donated to them at least once, but often over several years. I’m leaving out organizations that I don’t want to donate to for various reasons and local charities, but I may revisit those topics someday. I’m also not including much commentary on each one since I’m hoping you will find your own reasons to like them and contribute.

Once again the forces for copyright have reduced the rights of normal people who have done nothing wrong. Any chance of a lost nickle is too much for the copyright advocates. And they get to demand these rights for life+70 years. That’s no good for the public domain, but that’s an easy to ignore consequence if they can be $20 richer in the 145th year of publication.

As China has amply demonstrated if you want to remain relevant to manufacturing you need a very different view of intellectual property. But don’t worry, for trading away making cars, washing machines, and almost everything else we got Hollywood and stock photo houses. Those are the best people to optimize our economy for it would seem. I’m sure Hollywood is excited to retrain coal and factory workers to be the next Dwayne The Rock Johnson.

To protect our government we should insist on a preference for open source solutions. It is cheaper initially and overall. There are fewer bugs. There is less motivation for nefarious deeds. Vendor lock-in goes away. All of this is true for businesses and home uses as well.

Maybe the FOP should push for better accountability around police shootings so that everybody can have the facts. But, no, they’re writing passionate letters that people wearing t-shirts they don’t agree with is making it hard for them to come to work. … I’m mixed on this. On one hand, I can see his point: had he known it was going to be so much more work, he wouldnt’ have done it in the first place. But on the other hand, if you’re going to choose to support an additional platform… then support it all the way.I played Rust and it’s one of the few games where I thought, “nice open ended game!” but seriously, Linux does get the short end of things when it comes to GPU support, game engine support, and testing coverage.I would counter the whole 1% platform argument with this: you are trying to break into segments of the market. Just because you flipped the sign to “open” for Linux, doesn’t mean people will suddenly jump on board… especially since it costs real money and it’s a gamble. (Anyone remember Loki Games?) It’s the job of the platform/engine/developer to strike out and market to the people to pull in more users.This “well, they didn’t all come and jump on the band wagon, so why bother spending resources to test it” line of thinking is why it isn’t successful. arg Sorry, SO much frustration when it comes to Linux and gaming that goes back to the ’90s. Yeah, I bought Rust as well. It was seriously the only reason why I joined Steam. (Thank goodness for those Kickstarters that released their games on multiple platforms through Steam, otherwise, it would have been a complete waste).

What can we do better?” RECRUITER: “It is a tough market out there. You just have to keep at it.“HM: “Should we change our job description requirements to bring in more candidates? RECRUITER: “If we relax our expectations we will be flooded with so many applicants we can’t handle it.“HM: “But how can somebody have 5 years experience with a product that has only been out 1 year?” RECRUITER: “For the best candidates that should not be a problem.“HM: “OK then, where’s the next stack of resumes?” In my screenplay version of this the recruiter doesn’t respond logically at the end. She shoots the Hiring Manager so he doesn’t spread the word that unicorn hunts are boring and not fun. Then she calls the HR mafia who come sweeping in to disappear the body. But I kept it closer to the analogy for this discussion.

Somehow the Italians realize they are not the least arrogant, plus in a fit of fabulous self-realization Italians see themselves as the least trustworthy! So go to #italy because they are so passionate, but stay because they stole your wallet.

Kudos to the fabulous writers and table makers at +The Economist. They are the /New Yorker/ of news IMHO.

$2000 +- $200 is their MSRP and if you get in on the campaign you can have it for $1550 +- $150. It definitely looks like a MacBook but without proprietary bits inside. :-) And it might even be cheaper than a MacBook Pro.

This guy talks about Linux distributions for 13 paragraphs without mentioning package formats or using your desktop to develop for the server. He’s trying to push for splitting server and desktop distros without mentioning CoreOS. Could this be why folks accuse him of not using Linux? Maybe he talked to some actual Linux users, but ignored what they said and wrote what he felt like writing. Maybe he thinks Linux is controlled by some big corp and that this whining will get things done. Maybe they’re so desperate to print Linux articles it doesn’t matter if they’re clearly written by somebody who uses some other OS to get their work done.

The author of this article likes to poke at the glitches in the Linux desktop. None of that sounds any worse than Windows. With a Linux desktop I don’t have to fear it slowing to a crawl under the load of malware you accumulate simply by installing “free” software or browsing the “free” Internet. With a Linux desktop I’m confidant that 99% of the drivers I need are already included and require no downloads or installs or extra work for me. If I want to install Windows 7 on a Windows 8 laptop how many hours will it take to get all of the drivers downloaded and installed? How many reboots will it take? How many calls to support or the help desk will it take? Does Matt’s straw man feel the brisk breeze blowing him down the way? The reliability and flexibility of the Linux desktop are unequaled. Even when canonical goes in some lame direction, the community forks and good things keep happening. How did the community alternatives to Windows 7 fare? Oh, they’re impossible because they don’t accept the value of openness or competition? I know I can keep running a Linux desktop forever and I can pay somebody to write patches if I desire. Someday Windows will follow OS/2, geos, and AmigaOS to the dust bins of history. No corporation can do that to Linux.

While the author reiterates and dismisses the analogy of the GPL to a virus, I want to build on it. Imagine for a minute that the current case succeeds in confirming the gist of the GPL in that you must release your code if you build on top of GPL technologies. That’s a step up from the settlement in FSF vs. Cisco. This solid legal ground inspires an intrepid geek in the Dakotas to reverse engineer Microsoft C++ libraries to discover serious GPL violations. This leads to every major software vendor being sued and forced to release their source code under the GPL.

I understand that hardware and software are different, but I think the making the analogy of open hardware to Linux is fair. This author can’t get past that. He comes up with lots of “buts” and his many buts have inspired some “buts” in response.

BUT: the expense of change is highly variable depending on where you are in the release cycle. If you want to change software just before a release it is much more expensive and traumatic than making a change during the development part of the cycle. This is also true in hardware development. Changing a connector during the design would be just as cheap and painless as in the software world. Changing it close to release or while the part is ramping up production would and should be expensive, just like with code. Code will require retesting and repackaging which could push the release date and future development cycles back. Nothing is free, the analogy is working.

I’m glad to see more people catching on to this idea. BrightRoll imposed a no meetings in the afternoon rule recently which has been working out great for me. Knowing I have a big block of time to work every day is a boon. Stacking meetings at the end of the day is another way to get the same result.

I’m not going to pretend that the Linux desktop is free of bugs or that every Windows app has an great equivalent in Linux. But installing Linux is often easier than installing Windows on the same hardware. Linux includes nearly all of the device drivers you will ever need. And I don’t have to fear the inevitable Windows spiral of death from malware, viruses, and bloat. So, do you want to cry about phantom floppy drives messages or fight viruses and malware for the rest of your life? Hmmmm.

Eventually Microsoft will go bankrupt and the only company maintaining a proprietary OS will be Oracle. When Microsoft sells off the mouse and keyboard business you’ll know the end is nigh. I also ignored the advice of several folks that told me to go to craiglist. I went with a hybrid from REI. They adjusted a few things before my second day of riding and now I’m up to ~70 miles on the new bike since Wednesday when I bought it. Bru-hahahaha. Pictures have been taken and will be uploaded. I’ve got 600 pics from the new camera to sift through.I don’t feel like I’m trapped in Santa Monica now that I can get to the light rail. I made it all the way to Barnaby’s Wednesday night by bike/train/bike. To get to Costa Mesa I punted for the last 10 miles so it ended up being bike/train/bike/taxi. I rode the Green Line for the first and probably last time. :)

This doesn’t seem like overkill at all. Millions of euros are being lost! This is so heinous I wonder why they stop at drones. Why not fire an EMP blast at the miscreants to fry their cell phones? That would teach ’em. Or drop tear gas? Maybe that’s too old school. Here’s the plan: identify the kids and robocall their mothers with a list of the crimes their offspring have recently committed. That’s the way to save money here. If the Germans don’t get on top of this we’ll think they’re as wasteful as the Greeks.

I was there for a meetup but the only folks I found were Natalie and Hoan. We had a nice time hanging out and catching up. The “dye” ended up being unpleasant to breath so we ended up being the cleanest people there. We did the whole 5k, but we skipped some of the dye stops.

I read a few passages from this book while doing background research on “five nines” reliability. This led me to find that the print book is now $200-$300 which is particularly ironic considering the book’s title.

An even bigger curiosity is: has this book has any real impact? Are we moving to a more distributed model of power generation? The recent announcement of bulk solar installations on military base housing seems like a move in this direction. Has there been a real change in direction? It seems like the big guys are still trying to build more megaplants, but maybe the real action is projects that get little notice.

So I’ve ended up playing with Windows7 (gaming platform) more than intended on my new Linux laptop. :) It seems that Microsoft – while touting desktop gadgets as a great feature – has killed their dynamic directory of gadgets and they just have a static page now. So updates are not propagating. Plus you have to go to the developers site for updates, but the links everybody has in their gadgets broke too so you have to bring up the browser and site by hand. So it seems Microsoft is still the land of half-assed half measures for half-wits.

(it still doesn’t! lol) Well, now you can mute any post that you have fulfilled, and once you have muted your entire page, you can refresh your tab and another page of requests pops up! This means that you don’t have to spam notifications or requests, hoping that they stay on the first page long enough to get clicks! You can send out a request once and know that people will be able to get to it! Today is my first day on google plus and I have run into two frustrations. The most immediate and irritating issue is that when I try to type and make a post in Safari it goes crazy like I’m typing lots of stuff I’m not. I am typing this is a local editor and I hope that I can cut and paste this in. The other big irritant is that I have a circle of people I don’t want to follow, but they show up by default. Is it possible to make a circle of Negation?
