MONA STALKS A JACKAL

by Carol Stevens
Illustrated by Claire Brady

When a storm launches Mona the Mermaid out of Lake Erie and onto Crescent Beach, the young mermaid makes the beautiful bay her new home. But while the creatures of Crescent are nice, they aren't happy.

A jackal terrorizes them by day and haunts them by night!

Mona wants to help her friends. But the first time Mona meets up with the jackal, her beautiful tail is punctured! And it hurts!

Mona knows she shouldn't meet with Jay-deen again, yet she needs to learn more about this wily creature.

One stormy night, while the winds howl and waves pound the beach, Mona accepts the jackal's invitation to talk.

Will this be a mistake? Or can Mona convince the jackal to be friends?

In Book One of Mona the Mermaid, this young mermaid learns lessons about honesty, friendship and the two sides to most stories.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Carol Stevens is the author of the Mona the Mermaid early chapter book series, inspired by decades of family storytelling along the shores of Lake Erie. What began as imaginative bedtime tales for her two children—and later retold to cousins, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren—eventually grew into the beloved Mona adventures young readers enjoy today.

The turning point came when Carol’s daughter, Claire Brady, challenged her to email a new chapter each evening so her own children wouldn’t miss their annual pilgrimage to Crescent Beach. The grandchildren quickly became exacting editors—calling promptly if a chapter hadn’t arrived on time. It only made sense for Claire to illustrate the resulting books. Who better to bring the creatures of Crescent to life than someone who had imagined them since childhood?

Carol’s connection to Crescent Bay, Ontario, began years earlier when she worked as a newspaper columnist and reporter at the Courier-Express in Buffalo, N.Y. Fellow reporter Erik Brady invited her to visit a small cottage on the sandy shores of Lake Erie that had been in his family for more than a century. A few years later, Carol and Erik married—and honeymooned in that very cottage. Though they moved away when the newspaper folded, their love for Crescent Beach brings them back every summer.

Today, the magic of that place lives on in the world of Mona the Mermaid.
