Regulators issued warnings\/blacklists, suspended or withdrew licenses, and many brands were discontinued soon after as a result.<\/p>\n<section aria-labelledby=\"footnotes\"><\/section>\n<h2>Exceptions &#8211; Not Quite &#8220;Closed&#8221;<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Binary.com \u2014<\/strong>\u00a0Rebranded to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.binaryoptions.net\/deriv\">Deriv<\/a> in 2020 and continues to provide binary options products.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alpari \u2014<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fca.org.uk\/news\/statements\/news-customers-alpari-uk-limited\">UK entity closed in 2015<\/a>, however Alpari as a brand still exists offshore offering trading products like forex and CFDs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Core Liquidity Markets \u2014 <\/strong>Stopped providing binaries after regulators, notably ASIC, prohibited binary options for retail investors and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asic.gov.au\/about-asic\/news-centre\/find-a-media-release\/2018-releases\/18-126mr-asic-suspends-afs-licence-of-direct-fx-trading-pty-ltd-for-compliance-failures\/\">suspended the license of its operator<\/a>, FX Trading Pty Ltd.<\/li>\n<li><strong>BDSwiss \u2014\u00a0<\/strong>Stopped offering binaries through its CySEC entity in 2018 following the ESMA ban that curtailed EU binary providers, but still exists today focused on forex and CFDs, as confirmed in its <a href=\"https:\/\/partners.bdswiss.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/BDSwiss_General_Partner_Guidelines_BDS_EU.pdf\">company materials<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nadex<\/strong> <strong>\u2014\u00a0<\/strong>Stopped accepting new clients in December 2025 and shuttered its platform as it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nadex.com\/notices\/cdna-transitions-to-crypto-com-app\">transitioned to Crypto.com<\/a>, where users can still trade event-based contracts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"context\">Why So Many Binary Options Brands Have Shut Down<\/h2>\n<p>Between 2016 and 2021, many regulators worldwide tightened rules or outright banned brokers from offering binary options.<\/p>\n<p>In the EU, ESMA introduced a prohibition effective 2 July 2018 (renewed thereafter), which most national regulators then made permanent (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esma.europa.eu\/press-news\/esma-news\/esma-adopts-final-product-intervention-measures-cfds-and-binary-options\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESMA product intervention<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dlapiper.com\/insights\/publications\/2018\/10\/finance-and-markets-global-insight-issue-15\/europe-wide-ban-on-risky-binary-options\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU-wide ban overview<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Canada followed with a national prohibition in September 2017 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.osc.ca\/en\/news-events\/news\/canadian-securities-regulators-announce-ban-binary-options\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CSA announcement<\/a>), while Australia banned sales to retail clients in 2021 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asic.gov.au\/about-asic\/news-centre\/find-a-media-release\/2021-releases\/21-064mr-asic-bans-the-sale-of-binary-options-to-retail-clients\/\">ASIC media release<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Consumer warnings were also issued by the FBI, SEC, and CFTC regarding fraud patterns and unregistered platforms (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/stories\/binary-options-fraud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FBI: Binary Options Fraud<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/LearnAndProtect\/AdvisoriesAndArticles\/fraudadv_binaryoptions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CFTC\/SEC investor alert<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investor.gov\/protect-your-investments\/fraud\/types-fraud\/binary-options-fraud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Investor.gov guidance<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Many Cyprus-regulated brands (a core hub for EU binaries) renounced or lost their CIF licences with the CySEC, and numerous offshore sites were blacklisted by regulators, prompting mass closures or pivots to CFDs\/Forex.<\/p>\n<p>Since the wave of closures we saw in the 2010s and early 2020s, the number of new binary brands emerging and firms closing has slowed down.<\/p>\n<p>Check the current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.binaryoptions.net\/regulation\">rules and regulations on binary options trading<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since 2012, we\u2019ve reviewed more than 70 binary options brokers, however many are no longer in operation.
