Privacy at BC Transit

BC Transit collects and uses personal information only for the purpose of delivering services, supporting safety, or meeting legal requirements. As a public body, our privacy practices are governed by British Columbia’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA), which outlines how information must be collected, used, shared, and protected. 

Personal Information

Personal information is any recorded information about an identifiable individual. This includes your name, contact details, or other information that can identify you. Business contact information (e.g. work phone number, business email, job title, office address) is generally not considered personal information unless it reveals personal details about an employee. 

Your Privacy Rights

You have rights under FOIPPA that give you control over your personal information. These rights include the ability to:

  • Ask for corrections if your information is inaccurate or incomplete. 
  • Know why your information is being collected and how it will be used. 

If you have a concern about how your personal information is handled: 

  • You can contact BC Transit’s Privacy Office for assistance. 
  • You can bring your concern to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia (OIPC), the independent authority that oversees compliance with FOIPPA. 

How we Protect Your Information

We protect personal information through: 

  • technical safeguards (such as system protections and secure storage) 
  • physical safeguards (secure facilities and controlled access) 
  • administrative safeguards (policies, procedures, and staff training) 
  • Access controls (oversight and need-to-know)

What Information We Collect and Why

We collect only the information needed to provide transit services, support our customers, and ensure safety. This may include: 

  • contact details you provide 
  • incident reports or witness statements 
  • audio or video recordings for safety and security  

How We Use and Share Information

Personal information is used only for the purposes it was collected. Where service providers support our operations, information may be shared under contracts that require compliance with FOIPPA and our security requirements. We may also disclose personal information without consent when authorized or required by law, such as for safety, investigations, or legal processes. We do not sell or trade your personal information. 

Website Privacy

When you visit bctransit.com, we collect limited information to operate the site and improve your experience. This may include: 

  • information you provide in forms (feedback, alerts, contact requests) 
  • technical details about your visit, such as IP address, browser type, pages viewed 
  • cookies or analytics data used to understand website performance 

This information helps us respond to you, maintain security, and improve functionality. You can adjust your browser settings to manage cookies. 

Our website contains links to external sites. Once you leave bctransit.com, their privacy policies apply. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of third-party websites. Social Media, Surveys, and Feedback

BC Transit uses social media platforms to share information and engage with riders. These platforms operate under their own privacy policies. We encourage you to be mindful of what you share publicly.

We use surveys and feedback tools to improve our services. Our surveys are designed to be transparent, explaining what information is collected, whether responses are anonymous, and how results will be used. You may unsubscribe from notifications or alerts at any time.

Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Cameras

We use CCTV cameras on our fleet and properties to support and enhance the safety and security of riders and employees. 

Recordings are continually overwritten and segments needed for investigations, incidents or security reviews are securely retained only as long as required. Access is limited to select authorized staff.

Personal Information Bank Directory (PIB)

BC Transit maintains a directory of Personal Information Banks, as required by FOIPPA. 

PIBs describe collections of personal information organized by name or other identifiers and help the public understand what information BC Transit holds and how it is used.

Concerns or Complaints

If you have a privacy concern or wish to make a complaint, please contact our Privacy Office with as many details as possible to help us understand your complaint and respond promptly.

You also have the right to bring your concern to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia (OIPC).
