“Animal Friends,” the live action-animated hybrid film from Warner Bros, has moved from a planned June 5 release to Jan. 22, 2027, the studio announced Friday. Ryan Reynolds voices Pony while Jason Momoa voices Bear in the story of two fugitive animals.
Peter Atencio directs the adult-targeted road trip adventure that co-stars Aubrey Plaza as a DEA agent, Addison Rae, Dan Levy as a Fish and Wildlife ranger, Lil Rey Howery as the voice of a bird and Ellie Bamber.
Pony has been described as a tiny narcissist, while the large Bear is conflict-averse. They head out on an adventure across America to find the ranch they once lived on while being pursued by an equally odd couple DEA agent and Fish & Wildlife ranger.
Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider wrote the screenplay for Legendary, Maximum Effort and Prime Focus Studios.
“Animal Friends” has been hopping around the schedule like a fluffle of rabbits. First set for Aug. 15, 2025 through Columbia, it moved to Warner Bros. after Legendary’s distribution deal with Sony ended. Warners skedded the hybrid film for Oct. 10, then May 1 and June 5.
The June 5 date vacated by “Animal Friends” still has several other releases planned, including “Masters of the Universe” from Amazon/MGM, Nick Jonas and Paul Rudd starring in Lionsgate’s “Power Ballad” and “Scary Movie” from Paramount/Miramax.

Aubrey Plaza is set to star in and produce The Heidi Fleiss Story, a biopic of “Hollywood madam” Heidi Fleiss from Pinky Promise, the production company behind the Pamela Anderson drama The Last Showgirl, Deadline has confirmed.
The dark comedy marks the directorial debut of Leah Rachel, the creator of Netflix series Chambers. Rachel Sennott, the actress known for roles in titles like Shiva Baby and Bottoms, who has her own upcoming HBO series, penned the script with Rachel and Travis Jackson. Jessamine Burgum and Kara Durrett will produce for Pinky Promise, alongside Plaza for Evil Hag, with production to take place in Los Angeles this year.
Fleiss became known in the 1990s for running a high-profile prostitution ring that catered to the rich and powerful of Los Angeles, including some in Hollywood. Her empire came crashing down in 1993, when she was arrested and charged with multiple counts, including pandering, and sentenced to prison. The film tracks Fleiss in the tense days leading up to her trial, as she navigates Los Angeles, using her web of connections to try to manipulate and blackmail her way out of the charges, with the assistance of an ambitious young writer named Jaclyn.
Most recently appearing in Ethan Coen’s Honey Don’t and Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, following lauded turns in Sundance’s My Old Ass and The White Lotus Season 2, Plaza will next be seen starring in Ethan Coen and Tricia Cook’s dark comedy, Honey Don’’!, which premiered at Cannes and opens in theaters via Focus Features on August 22nd. She’ll also be seen in Legendary’s Animal Friends, out via Warner Brothers on May 1, 2026, and stars opposite Susan Sarandon in the upcoming indie The Accompanist, marking the directorial debut of Zack Woods.

The people deciding who walks away with an Oscar in 2026 will include Wicked star Ariana Grande; Sebastian Stan; and Aubrey Plaza, whose movies include Emily the Criminal.
At least, all three have been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences this year. The body announced Thursday that it had asked a total of 534 actors, as well as executives, to become members of its 10,000-plus member body.
While hundreds were invited, the snub of Emilia Perez star Karla Sofía Gascón, did not go unnnoticed. Gascón, who played the title character, was given a Best Actress nod, becoming the first openly transgender person to be nominated in an Oscars acting category.
Oscar nominees are automatically considered for membership, but it’s not guaranteed they’ll be asked. While branches of the organization, such as actors or writers, come up with recommendations, the 55-person Board of Governors makes the final decision.
