2 Cuddly Cats Disappear in a Blur the Second Their Feeder Goes Off
Ah, cats. They give us their love, but they can take it away just as quickly without even a regretful glance back. That's the contract we sign when we fall for them. We wipe our tears, shudder at the sting of it all, and love them, anyway.
One little girl saw a beautiful display of that philosophy in action courtesy of not one, but two cats.
The video opens with the black and white cat pulling a move no human can resist: the roll onto the back. This will literally cause people to run squealing across a room just to pet said cat. It works, obviously. The little girl is throwing the word "love" around like this moment might even last. Meanwhile, an orange cat lounges calmly, like they know exactly how this ends.
And end it does. In just 19 seconds, it's over, and the cats are gone like a flash. Lesson brutally delivered.
Ever wonder where you rank in the cat hierarchy? Somewhere below the automatic feeder.
Oh, so sad. The little girl never even saw it coming.
Commenters understand perfectly. "No one is a friend when that feeder goes off," wrote one. Another replied, "They said 'Peace out, Girl Scouts.'”
Pros and Cons of Automatic Feeders
It seems as though everyone is using these for their beloved furry family members these days, and you might be wondering, "Should I?" There are definite advantages and disadvantages, so let's break them down.
A lot of the cons are disappearing as technology advances and these machines come down in price. A few big caveats still exist.
An automatic feeder tends to remove human bonding and interaction from the entire equation. Cats love food, and therefore the feeding process is a positive one for them, and helps build bonds and trust. When you add in enrichment to the process via puzzle toys or other means, you're giving your cat(s) mental and physical exertion that's excellent for their overall well-being. Use a feeder, and you're at risk of losing that valuable time, unless you make a concentrated effort to make it up elsewhere.
Multi-cat feeders utilize all sorts of cool technology to ensure that each cat is getting their own proper portion. However, according to cat behaviorists, cats are not naturally "family style eaters," so forcing them to eat in bowls side by side (as these feeders do) goes against their nature. Accordingly, homes with more than one cat are better off having one feeder or one bowl set up in a different location per cat.
There's also the added work of cleaning out the machine. Cats can start resource guarding, or it may cause stress or conflict between cats. There's also the potential for machine malfunction that could cause over or underfeeding, or your cat may learn how to game the system by tipping it or otherwise figuring out how to wrangle more out of it.

As far as pros? Features will allow you to control portions, schedule your mealtimes, and ensure that your schedule is being adhered to if you're at work late or out of town. (Remember to never leave your cat alone for longer than 24 hours.) They help with weight management and medical needs. Your cat may wake you up at 5 a.m. for a snack again. You get a lot of time saved and peace of mind. They will prevent your cat from eating too quickly and vomiting.
Do your research. There's lots of information online, but make sure you're reading info from a reputable source, and not an ad disguised as an article. Consult your vet if you feel unsure.
At the end of our video, this particular feeder did its job. The cats knew what to expect, and they got what they wanted. The humans got ignored. Everyone goes on with their day, and we're all fully aware of where we stand in the whole arrangement.
