- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2025Format: KindleVerified Purchase"Gnomebody's Business: A Longbow Initiative Story" by James P. Mcdonald was an enjoyable short story. It took me into the gnome world. Beth is tasked with heading into the gnome world when her boss, Wynn, is out of town. Beth has never done a case by herself, and she needs to figure out who is doing evil things to the gnomes. My favorite scene of this short story was the initial phone call from Cariatink to Beth and then when Beth called Wynn. I was laughing so hard. James is a new to me author, and I can see myself reading others by James.

A Longbow Initiative Story. Police procedural mystery and paranormal novella.
When a gnome is murdered and turned to stone, Agent Beth Raines is called to investigate. She’s changed to gnome size and determined to survive her first solo case.
The danger is larger than she is.
A humorous monster story that will have you laughing out loud, though classifications show this as horror. Um, not so much. A good cop mystery with gnomes and more.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2026Format: KindleThis is a quick fun read. Agent Beth Raine is on her first solo case, in a community of gnomes. Solving this mystery requires her shrink and the danger does not come in small sizes. It has some funny moments, a few scary moments and I was invested in outcome.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2017Format: PaperbackThis book took me longer to read only because it has been a busy week and I've only had a chance to read a few pages at a time, but this one book I could've read in one sitting...As anyone who follows me knows, I am an avid reader...so reading a book in a night does not disqualify it's content, rather it qualifies it.
The book, or booklet as I think of it, is 100 pages long and is perfect for a quick read, reading during a commute, vacation reading or one of those "palate cleansing" books I like to read after coming out of a long saga or book series.
The Longbow Initiative is an organization similar to the FBI, but one that deals with the Fae world. I am huge fan of combining Fae and mythological worlds with the common world. So for that alone, I loved the book. But the characters are also engaging, witty, and endearing. I cared about the characters and what happened to them.
I picked this book up at a Comicon and a book another one in the Longbow Initiative series, "Spirits of the Season." The author, James P McDonald, is very personable and I enjoyed having a chat with him about writing. He appears to enjoy talking to his fans and eager to talk about his work. I also got both of my books signed. At the comicon he sold out of "Spritis of the Season."
Anytime I get a book I will peruse it before putting it on a shelf to be read later. Often I am already reading a book and I don't like to stop even when buying a new one. But that night I stopped reading the book at hand, and started on Gnomebody's Business.
The gnomes, who are trying to co-exist in our world, are being terrorized by someone or something that turns them to stone. The antagonist is building a garden fountain and decorating it with the gnomes that were turned. As sad as this is, because all of the gnomes are very endearing characters, I love this idea because it pulls things from the book world into our real world. Try reading Gnomebody's Business and then shop in the garden department of a store. You will definitely look at the stone gnomes and wonder....
I recommend this book a lot. I really enjoyed it and actually want to re-read it soon when life calms down a little and I have the chance to read it all in one shot or at least over the course of two nights. Reading a few pages at a time I feel like I missed something because I wasn't able to devote my time to it like I normally do when reading.
But it is a keeper and will be re-read again and again, and when I need a quick read for something the Longbow Initiative books by James P McDonald will be what I grab. I hope he writes more.
