Akitas are powerful, independent, and strong-willed dogs. While exceptionally loyal, they require a confident, experienced leader who understands canine psychology and can provide consistent, firm but fair discipline. They are generally not recommended for the novice guardian.
An Akita typically needs 60 to 90 minutes of daily physical activity. This should include long walks, mental stimulation, and training sessions to maintain their physical health and mental sharpess.
The Japanese Akita (Akita Inu) is smaller, more fox-like, and comes in specific colors like red fawn, sesame, brindle, and white. The American Akita is larger, heavier, and can come in any color or pattern, often featuring a characteristic "black mask".
The Akita's thick double coat requires weekly brushing most of the year. However, twice a year they "blow" their coat, during which daily brushing is essential to manage the significant amount of shedding.
