Because of your cat’s heightened senses, your personal scent is discernable on everything you touch, including your furniture. If you like your sofa, so will she, even when you’re not on it. As far as kitty is concerned, it’s her furniture, too—so here’s how to do a little catproofing and keep it looking nice.
TOSS A THROW Draping an inexpensive throw blanket across furniture is a simple way to keep cat hair in one, easily-removable place.
ADD SOME CITRUS: Spraying citrusy smells on the corners of your furniture may deter your cat from lounging there. Just be sure that whatever you spray is safe for your cat and your furniture alike.
TRY BUMPY MATS: Plastic mats with raised bumps (sold in pet stores) can deter your cat from leaping onto the furniture. She may stay off it even after you’ve removed the mats.
GIVE YOUR CAT CHOICES: Give your cat plenty of nice, cushiony spots to sit, ideally elevated and close to windows for his viewing pleasure. The goal is to make better spots available—so he’ll want to spend less time on that boring old sofa. As with any training, reward your cat with verbal accolades, treats, snuggles, and brushing when he’s learned what you expect of him regarding the furniture. This will reinforce his success—and yours.

Great book for all people thinking of getting a cat!
Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2017This is a really nice book! I love the silver on the corners of the front and back cover; it really makes the book look nice. The book itself is filled with beautiful photos and the whole way of reading it flows very nicely—I love how each subheading/section is numbered and the book begins by teaching you the basics that you need to know before getting a cat and proceeding from there. I also found the information to be generally good. I love how this book doesn't judge you so harshly for letting your cat be indoor-outdoor, instead recommending indoor but still explaining how to do the outdoor option for those in safer areas for cats to be outdoors. Also, the page about cat allergies was nice—instead of simply saying that someone with allergies should absolutely not own a cat, they acknowledged that it is possible for an allergic person to manage life with a cat. And as for my personal way of judging a cat book's validity—they did recommend wet food over dry food (which is good), but also remained understanding of those who use dry food only. Overall a very good book, and although I know a lot about cats already, I almost feel like it's teaching me some things I didn't realize before. Thank you, AdoptaPet.com, for such a great book!

Very informative
Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2016I'm still reading it, but it is very informative. I just adopted a 10 year old cat who had been at the SPCA for over a year. She is very shy, but very loving with me. It's been many years since I've had a cat. My dog got sick and died about 2 months ago. I decided I'm not up to caring for another dog, but a cat is more independent and will remain in the house so will be easier for me to care for. I have a lot of questions which this book is answering for me.

The Cat's Meowwww
Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2017This book is the Cat's Meow (sorry) as far as I'm concerned as a great reference on any topic about cats. I have read quite a few books and magazines and truly I believe this is the best and probably the only one you'll ever need. It shouldn't come as any surprise as who knows the most about cat behavior?? A resource who is behind cat adoptions nationwide. Don't snooze... if you have a question they have the answer.
