Aston Villa In Bowl Transformation

Aston Villa FC

Vast New Digital Platform Futureproofs Villa Park

Aim:

Aston Villa FC have worked with ADI for over 25 years, and they were the very first club in UK football to receive stadium LED screens back in 1997, blazing a trail for other football stadia.

Already home to two existing ADI LED screens in opposing corners of the stadium, Aston Villa were seeking additional ways in which to enhance the matchday experience for their fans.

With the digital infrastructure playing an important role in this, ADI were asked to provide a full consultation on how the stadium’s digital assets could be expanded to help modernise the stadium and improve the atmosphere and matchday experience.

Stadium Consultancy & Visualisation

With the club investigating ways in which they could make improvements to the existing stadium, we provided a full consultation around the venue’s digital infrastructure and how it could be expanded to modernise the atmosphere and experience.

Following a full stadium survey, ADI created several full-video virtualisations to visualise different options for the Club board. These demonstrated how different types of content, such as commercially driven or engagement-driven content, would look.

In-bowl Stadium Transformation

The revised stadium bowl features a number of new digital platforms to augment the existing screens, creating one of Europe’s largest and highest resolution digital platforms, utilising over 750m2 of new LED screens and signage using ADI’s proprietary technology.

Villa Park now features multiple layers of digital ribbons and screens adorning stands on every side of the stadium. Additionally, the existing digital perimeter system has been replaced by a brand new UEFA-compliant digiBOARD system around all four sides of the pitch.

As well as supercharging the atmosphere for fans, the screens and signage have revolutionised the commercial opportunities within the stadium. Different elements can operate separately or in tandem with other parts, with content able to be synchronised across the whole digital platform to dramatic effect.

Full Stack Solution

ADI have provided a complete turnkey service for Villa. Once a decision had been made on the stadium solution design, ADI began manufacturing the hardware, which is made to the specifications of each project.

ADI’s structural team designed various custom brackets which were required for the curved stands in the corner of the stadium, and the supporting structures for the bespoke club shop screens, in preparation for our screen integrations. The inhouse Engineering team specified the necessary playout solutions.

In addition to manufacturing, installing and operating the platforms, ADI are responsible for creating content and then delivering it on matchdays. Matchday programming is delivered remotely from galleries at ADI’s Preston-based HQ over their proprietary Live Venue fibre network.

Advanced Control System

With such a large platform encompassing multiple synchronised elements across different stadium locations, a complex media control system was required. Content is controlled using a powerful media server, which provides a single unifying platform controlling every one of the 17+ million pixels within the stadium bowl.

Total Stadium Takeover

The solution allows for every piece of signage to be scheduled and controlled, with frame-perfect synchronisation allowing for content to be co-ordinated across the whole platform; a feature we call Total Stadium Takeover (TST). TST also encompasses the stadium’s LED screens and brings huge value at various points within a match, whether it’s a scheduled TST of a partner brand across the stadium or a reactive piece of content that dominates the venue when a goal is scored.

Live venue remote matchday broadcast

Villa Park is part of ADI’s ever-growing Live Venue network. This dedicated broadcast-fibre network provides direct connectivity between ADI’s Preston-based broadcast hub and multiple sports and leisure venues across the UK and Europe.

Live Venue provides a direct link between the club and ADI’s creative and matchday teams, delivering low-latency (less than a tenth of a second) 4K video streams into the stadium, remotely produced and delivered live from ADI’s galleries in Preston.

Making The Matchday

Content creation is a collaborative process, with ADI’s Studios teams working closely with the club to create a channel identity, then design bespoke graphical elements and assets to use across the whole platform. Between fixtures, both teams work together to create bespoke programming to ensure fans are entertained with fresh, unique content on each and every matchday.

High Resolution – High Impact

The complete platform utilised ADI’s own MT LED modules, engineered and manufactured exclusively by ADI. Villa chose a high-resolution 6mm pixel pitch across all screens.

They have also opted for black LEDs, which provide enhanced contrast levels and exceptional colour representation. This ensures a future-proof platform that looks incredible, both for fans in the stadium and on the 4K broadcast feed to the global Premier League audience.

UEFA Approved digiBOARD Solution

The digiBOARD perimeter system utilises the same hardware configuration, creating what is believed to be the highest resolution UEFA-approved pitch-side platform for brands in a European stadium as well as the first to utilise black LEDs.

With a huge 1200mm height and stretching around all four sides of the pitch, this is a system that truly takes pitchside perimeter to a new level as a promotional platform for club and competition partners.

Club Store Screens & Digital signage

Beyond the stadium bowl, we’ve extended our expertise to other areas at Villa Park. The club store underwent a major two-phase transformation, which includes most recently, the installation of two huge creative LED screens to attract and welcome visitors to the ground. These join other fine-pitch indoor screens and signage installed into the shop for the 24/25 season.

Creative Store Entrance Screen

Villa fans visiting the store are now greeted with a huge new curved corner ‘wrap around’ screen measuring over 100m2 which sits above the store entrance. The screen allows the club to present anamorphic ‘forced perspective’ 3D style content, promote store offers, elevate partner activations and gain venue amplification through social media. On matchdays, the screen forms part of Villa’s pre-match entertainment, detailing stats, team line-ups and game-related trivia.

Innovative In-store displays

As fans enter the store, they are welcomed by a striking ‘fragmented’ style rectangular fine-pitch screen, covering an area of 21sqm with each panel set apart from each other in a grid format.

This screen is from ADI’s MTi indoor range, with a high-resolution 1.5mm pixel pitch suited for close-range viewing. The LEDs are designed with ‘Glue-On-Board’ technology, which protects the screen from damage in high-footfall areas where it is likely to be touched.

This screen joins the high-resolution portrait LED screen, installed in 2024, which welcomes fans into the new heritage area, forming part of an archive wall. Alongside treasured memorabilia, it immerses visitors in Villa’s storied achievements.

Digital Signage

Meanwhile, a ‘ticker-tape’ style LED ribbon runs the breadth of the store, promoting the Print Labs where fans can personalise their merchandise, adding a unique touch to their shopping experience.

All these screens have brought the merchandising space to life, creating a dynamic and engaging shopping experience for fans, in what is now the largest and most impressive experiential club merchandise space in Europe.

Dynamic Media Backdrops

Villa’s pre- and post-match interviews have been brought to life thanks to an all-new dynamic media backdrop. Super-fine pitch LED replaces the previous static backdrop, allowing it to be customised to suit different use cases and competitions, as well as provide moving content.

ADI have installed two media walls – one at the club training ground and another in the Villa Park media area – ensuring a professional and versatile solution for every occasion.

“We’ve worked with ADI for over 25 years and once again they’ve proven to be an exceptional partner. From the start of the consultation, their expertise has been evident.

We’re conscious that many stadiums have multiple operators managing different systems so it was important to us to have a single partner to install and operate the platform and it’s clear that ADI offers by far the best option in this regard.”

Outcome:

Villa Park now features multiple layers of digital ribbons and screens adorning stands on every side of the stadium. Additionally, the existing digital perimeter has been replaced by a brand-new UEFA-compliant digiBOARD system around all four sides of the pitch, making the stadium ‘Europe-ready’ for their third European campaign in a row.

As well as supercharging the atmosphere for fans, the screens and signage have revolutionised the commercial opportunities within the stadium. Different elements can operate separately or in tandem with other parts, with content able to be synchronised across the whole digital platform to dramatic effect.

The new Villa Store is now one of the largest and most impressive experiential club merchandise spaces in Europe. And, with plans to launch ‘The Warehouse’ music and entertainment venue later this year, Villa Park is solidifying its position as a premier destination for both football enthusiasts and discerning visitors to Birmingham.
