The Sea Dwarves are a resilient and industrious race of dwarves who have adapted to life along the coastlines and beneath the waves. With a rich tradition of shipbuilding and exploration, Sea Dwarves are natural sailors and formidable warriors. Their deep connection to the sea has given them unique traits that make them exceptional at navigating and surviving the harsh ocean environment. These dwarves are often found in bustling port cities or hidden underwater strongholds, where they build and maintain impressive fleets of ships.

Habitat

Sea Dwarves establish their homes in coastal fortresses and underwater cities. These environments provide them with ample resources and strategic advantages, allowing them to thrive both above and below the water. Their settlements are known for their intricate engineering and sturdy construction, capable of withstanding both natural and man-made threats. Sea Dwarves often incorporate maritime themes into their architecture, with structures designed to resemble ships or marine creatures.

Physical Traits

Sea Dwarves possess the robust physique typical of dwarves, with strong, stocky builds and hardy constitutions. Their skin tends to have a bluish or greenish tint, reflecting their oceanic heritage.

Many Sea Dwarves have webbed fingers and toes, aiding their swimming abilities. Their hair is often dark and thick, sometimes adorned with shells or beads. Sea Dwarves have keen eyesight adapted to the dim light of underwater environments, making them adept at spotting dangers in murky waters.

Society and Culture

Sea Dwarf society is tightly-knit and hierarchical, with a strong emphasis on loyalty and duty. Clan ties are paramount, and each member has a specific role to play in the community. Sea Dwarves are renowned for their craftsmanship, particularly in shipbuilding and metalwork. They take great pride in their creations, viewing each vessel as a work of art. Despite their gruff exterior, Sea Dwarves value hospitality and often welcome travelers and traders into their homes.

Clan Dynamics

Clan dynamics among Sea Dwarves are complex and deeply rooted in tradition. Leadership is typically passed down through family lines, with the eldest members holding the most authority.

Sea Dwarves value wisdom and experience, often seeking the counsel of elders before making important decisions. Competition for status and recognition is fierce, with clan members striving to outdo one another in feats of strength, bravery, and craftsmanship. Conflict within the clan is usually resolved through formal duels or contests, ensuring that disputes do not disrupt the community’s harmony.

They are expert shipbuilders, crafting vessels that are both durable and swift. Their ships often feature intricate carvings and decorations inspired by marine life. Most Sea Dwarves become sailors, capable of navigating the treacherous waters with ease and precision. They are also skilled fishermen and divers, harvesting the bounties of the ocean to sustain their communities.

Sea Dwarves as Pirates

Many Sea Dwarves find a natural calling in the life of a pirate. Their exceptional skills in shipbuilding and navigation make them invaluable members of any pirate crew. Known for their bravery and resilience, Sea Dwarves are often at the forefront of boarding actions, using their strength and combat prowess to overpower enemies. The lure of treasure and adventure drives many Sea Dwarves to piracy, where they can put their talents to use in the pursuit of individual wealth and glory.

As shipwrights, they ensure that the vessel remains seaworthy and capable of withstanding the rigors of the ocean. Their knowledge of the sea allows them to navigate treacherous waters with ease, avoiding dangers and finding the best routes. In combat, Sea Dwarves use their strength and endurance to dominate their foes, often serving as the backbone of the crew’s fighting force. Their natural affinity for the sea also makes them excellent divers, able to recover sunken treasures and perform underwater repairs.

Sea Dwarf Traits

Sea Dwarves are robust and skilled, possessing a great knowledge of acquatic environments and traditions. While playing as a Sea Dwarf, you gain the following racial traits:

  • Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 2, and your Strength score increases by 1.
  • Age. Sea Dwarves mature at the same rate as humans but are considered young until they reach the age of 50. On average, they live about 350 years.
  • Alignment. Sea Dwarves tend to be lawful, valuing tradition and order. However, their seafaring lifestyle can lead to more chaotic tendencies.
  • Size. Sea Dwarves stand between 4 and 5 feet tall and average about 150 pounds. Your size is Medium.
  • Speed. Your base walking speed is 25 feet. You also have a swimming speed of 20 feet.
  • Senses. Darkvision. Accustomed to life underwater and in dimly lit coastal caves, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
  • Dwarven Resilience. You have advantage on saving throws against poison, and you have resistance against poison damage.
  • Stonecunning. Whenever you make an Intelligence (History) check related to the origin of stonework, you are considered proficient in the History skill and add double your proficiency bonus to the check, instead of your normal proficiency bonus.
  • Sea Legs. You have advantage on ability checks and saving throws against being knocked prone, and you ignore non-magical difficult terrain while moving on a ship or coastal environments.
  • Mariner’s Expertise. You gain proficiency with navigator’s tools and water vehicles.
  • Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Dwarvish.
