Conjugated in some tenses, it forms <em>would<\/em>, but <em>would <\/em>also has other uses. In this article, though, I will be concerned with <em>will <\/em>as a verb.<\/p>\n<p><em>Will <\/em>is a <em>modal <a href=\"writingexplained.org\/grammar-dictionary\/helping-verbs\">auxiliary verb<\/a><\/em>, where it <em>describes an action that is expected to take place in the future<\/em>. It modifies many verbs in their future tenses.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You will arrive at the airport at 10:15am Thursday morning and escort the ambassador back to the royal palace.<\/li>\n<li>Catalina will turn us in at the earliest opportunity.<\/li>\n<li>I will sell my car when I can afford to buy a newer one.<\/li>\n<li>Apple Inc. said Wednesday it will open its new campus in April and spend six months moving employees into a glass-encased building reminiscent of a spaceship. &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/apple-to-open-new-campus-in-april-1487781842\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> <\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>When to Use Would<\/h2>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9634\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Definition-of-would-definition-and-definition-of-will-definition.png\" alt=\"Definition of would definition and definition of will definition\" width=\"400\" height=\"115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Definition-of-would-definition-and-definition-of-will-definition.png 400w, https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Definition-of-would-definition-and-definition-of-will-definition-300x86.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>What does would mean? <\/strong><em>Would <\/em>is another verb with multiple senses. Sometimes, it is the <em><a href=\"writingexplained.org\/grammar-dictionary\/past-tense\">past tense<\/a> of will<\/em> but only under certain conditions.<\/p>\n<p><em>Would <\/em>describes something that was in the future at the time of the original action, but is no longer in the future now.<\/p>\n<p>Here is an example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cJess said she would pick up the pizza,\u201d said Erik.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this example, Jess made a statement in the past about her intention to pick up a pizza in the near future. However, Erik is now referring to the event from a point even further in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Here is another example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nissan said its new chief executive would be Hiroto Saikawa, a 40-year company veteran who had served as Nissan\u2019s \u201cchief competitive officer\u201d and had led its operations in North America. &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/02\/22\/business\/nissan-executive-carlos-ghosn.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Would <\/em>is also a <a href=\"writingexplained.org\/grammar-dictionary\/conditional-sentence\">conditional<\/a> verb. One easy rule of thumb is that <em>will <\/em>is never past tense. It can be <a href=\"writingexplained.org\/grammar-dictionary\/present-tense\">present tense<\/a> and several different future moods and tenses, but <strong>never past tense<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You can easily remember that <em>will <\/em>is never past tense since the words <em>will <\/em>and <em>past <\/em>don\u2019t use any of the same letters.<\/p>\n<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n<p><strong>It is will or would? <\/strong><em>Will <\/em>and <em>would <\/em>are verbs, and each can be used many different ways.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Will <\/em>can be a present tense verb that means <em>to cause something to happen through force of desire<\/em>. It can also be <em>a modal auxiliary verb <\/em>in various tenses.<\/li>\n<li><em>Would <\/em>is a past tense form of <em>will<\/em>.
