Some homophones are spelled nearly the same, too, which does nothing to add clarity to the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Dual and duel are two such homophones. Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Aaron Burr challenged Alexander Hamilton to a duel.<\/li>\n<li>The candidates were wrapped up in their duel for the White House.<\/li>\n<li>Beatrice and Benedick were engaged in an ongoing duel of wits.<\/li>\n<li>There was no other way for this championship \u2014 which morphed into one of the most epic final-round duels the sport has ever seen \u2014 to end. \u2013<em><a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2016\/07\/17\/henrik-stensons-masterpiece-stuns-mickelson-at-british-open\/\" target=\"_blank\">New York Post<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>As a verb<\/strong>, duel means <em>to engage in a conflict between two entities. <\/em>Again, the conflict is not necessarily violent. Here are two examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We will duel in the town square at high noon.<\/li>\n<li>I would duel her in chess, but I would probably lose.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While duel can be a synonym for verbs like battle or argue, duel should only be used when the battle or argument is between two parties. Since most people who wear sandals wear two sandals, these sandal-wearers have dual sandals.
