Many people have trouble telling them apart because of their similar spelling and pronunciation, but, once you know their differences, they are actually quite easy to tell apart.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the Difference Between Affect and Effect?<\/h2>\n<p>Today, I want to go over the differences between these two words and give you a few ways to remember their differences.<\/p>\n<p>After reading this post, you shouldn&#8217;t ever have to second-guess yourself as to the correct use of these words, &#8220;Should I use effect or affect?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2824 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/confusing-words-affect-effect.png\" alt=\"confusing words affect effect\" width=\"800\" height=\"536\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/confusing-words-affect-effect.png 800w, https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/confusing-words-affect-effect-300x201.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>When to Use Affect<\/h2>\n<p><strong>What does affect mean?<\/strong> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2571\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/affected-vs-effected-definitions.png\" alt=\"affected vs effected definitions\" width=\"342\" height=\"99\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/affected-vs-effected-definitions.png 342w, https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/affected-vs-effected-definitions-300x87.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/>Affect is both a <a href=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/grammar-dictionary\/noun\">noun<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/grammar-dictionary\/verb\">verb<\/a>, but it is almost always used as a verb, meaning, \u201cto influence, change or alter.\u201d For example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This game will affect our standings in the league.<\/li>\n<li>The argument affected their marriage deeply.<\/li>\n<li>The riskier issue, though, is when philanthropists donate too heartily to a social change organization without thinking through how that donation could affect that group. &#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/14\/your-money\/making-big-donations-to-change-the-world.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Affect has a specialized meaning in psychology as a noun, \u201cfeeling or emotion, especially as manifested by facial expression or body language.\u201d For example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>After giving the patient the preliminary dosage, he described his affect as flat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is a technical term for which there is no need in everyday language. There is very little chance that this usage would ever make it into your writing, unless you happen to be studying psychology.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/ap-style\">AP Stylebook<\/a> gives some great advice on using \u201caffect\u201d as a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Noun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noun<\/a>: avoid it if possible. Unless you must use \u201caffect\u201d as a noun, i.e., you are a psychiatrist, you should try to avoid it. It leads to too much unnecessary confusion.<\/p>\n<p>See a similar discussion with the word <a href=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/affective-vs-effective-difference\">adjective affective here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>When to Use Effect<\/h2>\n<p><strong>What does effect mean?<\/strong> Effect<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2572 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/affect-versus-effects-grammar-meaning.png\" alt=\"affects vs effects grammar meaning\" width=\"342\" height=\"99\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/affect-versus-effects-grammar-meaning.png 342w, https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/affect-versus-effects-grammar-meaning-300x87.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/> is also both a noun and a verb, but it is almost always used as a noun, meaning, \u201coutcome, result.\u201d For example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The effect was overwhelming.<\/li>\n<li>The politician misrepresented the effect of his policies.<\/li>\n<li>These effects were nowhere near as distracting as the moving seats. &#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2016\/05\/11\/4-d-effects-add-nothing-but-cost-to-captain-america-civil-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>New York Post<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Effect can also be used as a verb meaning \u201cto make happen, produce, cause.\u201d For example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Over my tenure, I effected many changes around the company.<\/li>\n<li>Tax cut proponents hope to effect economic growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cEffect\u201d as a verb is not as common as \u201ceffect\u201d as a noun, but it is still quite common, so you should be familiar with it.<\/p>\n<h2>Tricks to Remember the Difference<b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14783\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/affect-vs-effect.png\" alt=\"affect vs effect\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/affect-vs-effect.png 300w, https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/affect-vs-effect-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>There are a few good effect vs. affect examples to remember the difference between these words that will get you through almost all the time.<\/p>\n<p><b>First<\/b>, determine if the usage calls for a noun or verb.<br \/>\n<b>Second<\/b>, if the sentence calls for a verb, the word you want is almost always \u201caffect,\u201d meaning to influence or alter.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The sunshine _______ my mood.<\/li>\n<li>The sunshine <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">affects<\/span> my mood.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Third<\/b>, if the sentence calls for a noun, the word you want is almost always \u201ceffect,\u201d meaning outcome or result.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The ______ of studying is getting better grades.<\/li>\n<li>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">effect<\/span> of studying is getting better grades.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can usually tell if a noun is needed by whether or not an article precedes it, such as \u201ca,\u201d \u201can,\u201d and \u201cthe.\u201d In our above sentence, \u201cthe\u201d precedes \u201ceffect,\u201d signaling that a noun is necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that both of these words can function as nouns and verbs, so this trick is not foolproof. There will be some cases where you cannot simply say, \u201caffect is a verb and effect is a noun.\u201d But this trick will get you by <b>most <\/b>of the time.<\/p>\n<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n<p>Is it affect or effect? Of course, that depends on your intended meaning.
