This is partly what makes them difficult to differentiate, but they are close in spelling.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the Difference Between Here and Hear?<\/h2>\n<p>Today, I want to discuss the differences between these two words, their functions in a sentence, and provide you with what you need to tell them apart in the future. After reading this post, you shouldn\u2019t ever mix up here vs. hear again.<\/p>\n<h2>When to Use Here<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1738\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/here.png\" alt=\"Hear or here examples\" width=\"342\" height=\"99\" \/>The word <em>here<\/em> can function as an adverb, <a href=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/grammar-dictionary\/adjective\">adjective<\/a>, and a noun. All of its uses deal with the location or place of a particular person or thing.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can we stop here for a bathroom break? (Adverb)<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ll stop the meeting here so everyone can get home early. (Adverb)<\/li>\n<li>This car here is stolen. (Adjective)<\/li>\n<li>The problem here is that no one knows how to get home. (Adjective)<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Here, in 140 characters or fewer, is some free advice for Twitter\u2019s next chief executive.&#8221; &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/06\/12\/business\/for-twitter-future-means-here-and-now.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/grammar-dictionary\/noun\">Noun<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you can see, all of these uses have to do with the location of something. In other words, <em>here<\/em> is where you are or where something is; it is never something you do.<\/p>\n<h2>Popular Phrases Using Here<\/h2>\n<p>There are quite a few phrases and idioms that incorporate the use of the word <em>here<\/em>. Here is a selection of them.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Here and now.\n<ul>\n<li>I am focused on the here and now.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Here and there.\n<ul>\n<li>I decorated the house for Christmas with lights here and there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Here goes.\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019m not sure what will happen after this but here goes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Here\u2019s to something\/someone.\n<ul>\n<li>Here\u2019s to the bride and groom; may their love never fade away.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Here today, gone tomorrow.\n<ul>\n<li>The artist has little talent and will likely be here today, gone tomorrow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Here we go again.\n<ul>\n<li>After the fight broke out, all I could think was, \u201cHere we go again.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Neither here nor there.\n<ul>\n<li>Whatever the dispute was is neither here nor there. The actions that took place after are of concern.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>When to Use Hear<\/h2>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1739\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/hear.png\" alt=\"is it here hear or hear here grammar rules\" width=\"342\" height=\"99\" \/>Hear<\/em> is a verb having to do with the ability to perceive sound. It can function as a transitive and intransitive verb.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can you hear my voice?<\/li>\n<li>I heard they got engaged.<\/li>\n<li>I have not heard from her lately.<\/li>\n<li>I heard about your surgery.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;We expect to hear plenty about gaming\u2019s monster franchises like Call of Duty, Halo and Madden at the Los Angeles conference.&#8221; &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/supreme-court-to-hear-case-offering-opportunity-to-limit-class-action-suits-1433787388\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Popular Phrases Using Hear<\/h2>\n<p>As is the case with <em>here<\/em>, there are quite a few phrases that incorporate the word <em>hear<\/em>. Here is a selection of them.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hear, hear. (Also, hear! hear!)\n<ul>\n<li>We deserve better than to be treated this way. Hear, hear!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A common spelling mistake is to spell <em>hear, hear<\/em> with <em>here<\/em>, i.e., <em>here, here<\/em>. That is incorrect.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Never hear the end of.\n<ul>\n<li>That happened one time, and you never let me hear the end of it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Remember the Difference<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1741\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/here-copy.png\" alt=\"is it here here or hear hear\" width=\"342\" height=\"99\" \/>There is a great memory trick buried inside of these words that is extremely helpful in determining whether you want to use here or hear.<\/p>\n<p>If you look at the word <em>hear<\/em>, the last three letters spell <em>ear<\/em>. Since you <em>hear<\/em> with your <em>ears<\/em>, this is a great way to remember that <em>hear<\/em> has to do with sound.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, if you look at the word <em>here<\/em>, it spells out the last four letters of the word <em>there<\/em>, both of which have to do with location.<\/p>\n<p>If you can remember these two tricks, you should be all set.<\/p>\n<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n<p>Although these words sound the same, they are quite different in their uses.
