Are they just variants of the same word? Do they have different meanings or different functions within a sentence? Which spelling is correct?<\/p>\n<p>In today\u2019s post, I want to address all of these questions so that you will never again have to second-guess yourself while writing either of these words. So, what is the difference between <em>judgement<\/em> vs. <em>judgment<\/em>?<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s the Difference Between Judgment, Judgement?<\/h2>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1710\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/judgment-spelling.png\" alt=\"how do you spell judgement\" width=\"342\" height=\"99\" \/>Judgment<\/em> and <em>judgement<\/em> are both nouns and they have a few different definitions. A <em>judgment<\/em> or <em>judgement<\/em> can be <em>the formation of an opinion<\/em>, <em>the mental ability to perceive or discern<\/em>, or <em>a legal determination from a court of law<\/em>. For example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The judgment from the referee was that the touchdown stands.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m not so sure about Joe; his judgement doesn\u2019t seem very good.<\/li>\n<li>The criminal awaited his judgment from the court.<\/li>\n<li>Your judgement of market trends is impressive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You\u2019re probably still wondering, \u201cOkay, when do I know which one to use?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer to that question is that the difference between the words is entirely dialectal. There is no demonstrable difference of sense or function between them, meaning both words can be used interchangeably.<\/p>\n<h2>When to Use Judgment<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1711\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/judgement-spelling.png\" alt=\"how to spell judgement\" width=\"342\" height=\"99\" \/>Even though the only thing separating these two words is a dialectical difference, it is still important to keep your audience in mind when picking which word to use and when.<\/p>\n<p><em>Judgment<\/em> (without the extra \u201ce\u201d) is the preferred word choice in American English (see below). If you find yourself writing to a predominately American audience or for an American newspaper, \u201cjudgment\u201d is the correct word choice.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1923\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/american-english-judgement.png\" alt=\"rules in american english grammar judgment\" width=\"1047\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/american-english-judgement.png 1047w, https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/american-english-judgement-300x110.png 300w, https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/american-english-judgement-1024x377.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1047px) 100vw, 1047px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why is this?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When Noah Webster was drafting the first American English dictionary, he sought to simplify many words from the traditional British English. Webster is usually credited with the creation of many American spellings that have fewer letters than their British counterparts. <em>Abridgement\/abridgment<\/em> and <em>acknowledgement\/acknowledgment<\/em> are a few examples of this, as are <em>color\/colour<\/em> and <em>flavor\/flavour<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The word <em>judgment<\/em>, however, has been around just as long as the lengthier <em>judgement<\/em> and was in use long before Webster wrote his first dictionary, so while Webster didn\u2019t invent the shorter <em>judgment<\/em>, he can still be credited with popularizing it in North America.<\/p>\n<p>Most American dictionaries and usage guides prefer the shorter <em>judgment<\/em>. <em>The AP Stylebook<\/em>, <em>The American Heritage Dictionary<\/em>, and <em>Merriam-Webster\u2019s Dictionary<\/em> all prefer <em>judgment<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly enough, despite the fact that <em>judgment<\/em> is seen as a primarily American spelling, it is still the preferred form for legal works in British English.<\/p>\n<h2>When to Use Judgement<\/h2>\n<p><em>Judgement<\/em> (with the extra \u201ce\u201d) is the preferred choice in British English. As the below chart shows, <em>judgement <\/em>is almost the invariable choice in British English. Should you use <em>judgment <\/em>instead, it will be viewed as incorrect (even though it isn\u2019t).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1715\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/judgment-versus-judgement.png\" alt=\"judgment versus judgement in sentences\" width=\"1170\" height=\"437\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As noted above, however, in English legal proceedings, <em>judgment<\/em> is actually the preferred choice, but in everyday usage, <em>judgement <\/em>is much more common.<\/p>\n<p>This, again, is why it is important to keep your audience in mind when you are writing.<\/p>\n<h2>Remember the Difference<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1712\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/judgement-judgment.png\" alt=\"vocabulary tests and spelling checks\" width=\"342\" height=\"99\" \/>As is the case with other American English, British English differences, there is a great and easy way to keep track of when to use <em>judgement<\/em> or <em>judgment<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Judgement<\/em> has an extra \u201ce\u201d in the word. Think of this \u201cE\u201d as standing for England and you will be able to remember which word to use.
