Are they both the same? Is one wrong to use? Is one more preferred than the other? There\u2019s no need to worry, however. Once you know the functions of each word, using entitled vs. titled is easy.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the Difference Between Entitled and Titled?<\/h2>\n<p>Today I want to talk about the difference between these two words, how they should be used in a sentence, and summarize the most popular and authoritative usage guides\u2019 opinions on them.<\/p>\n<p>After reading this post, you should have a clear understanding on how to use both of these words, and you can decide how to use them in your future writings.<\/p>\n<h2>When to Use Entitled<\/h2>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1463\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Entitled.png\" alt=\"titled or entitled grammar\" width=\"342\" height=\"99\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Entitled.png 342w, https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Entitled-300x87.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/>Entitled <\/em>has two definitions. The first and more common use is \u201cto furnish with a right or claim to something.\u201d For example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As an employee here, you are entitled to two weeks of vacation.<\/li>\n<li>She worked the hardest; she is entitled to the promotion.<\/li>\n<li>You are entitled to your opinion, but I think you are wrong.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The second sense of <em>entitled <\/em>is \u201cto give a name or title to.\u201d For example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She wrote a book entitled <em>To Kill a Mockingbird<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Today I read an article entitled \u201cWhy No One Reads,\u201d and it was eye opening.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>When to Use Titled<\/h2>\n<p><em>Titled<\/em> is the <a href=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/passed-vs-past-difference\">past<\/a> tense of the <a href=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/grammar-dictionary\/transitive-intransitive-verbs\">transitive verb<\/a><em> title<\/em>. It is defined as \u201cto give a name or title to.\u201d For example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What are you going to title your book?<\/li>\n<li>After much thought, the author titled her book.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Can I Use Entitled and Titled Interchangeably?<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1464\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Entitled-copy.png\" alt=\"a book titled or a book entitled\" width=\"342\" height=\"99\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Entitled-copy.png 342w, https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Entitled-copy-300x87.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/>The primary question of interest in the discussion of these two words is can <em>entitled<\/em> be used to refer to the title of a piece of work? And the answer to this question depends. Depends on what? Well, it depends on <a href=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/who-vs-whom-how-to-use-who-and-whom\">whom you ask<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some people emphatically say that you cannot use <em>entitled<\/em> in this sense, and that it should be restricted in its use to the first sense seen above, \u201cto give a legal right or just claim to something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The problem with this claim, however, is that the use of <em>entitled<\/em> in sense two from above is very well established, dating back to the 14th century, and it actually predates the use of sense one.<\/p>\n<p><em>The AP Stylebook<\/em> and several other newspaper guides reserve <em>entitled <\/em>to the first sense. Other usage guides, such as <em>Fowler\u2019s Modern English Usage<\/em>, say that both uses are acceptable.<\/p>\n<p>Still, other guides say that <em>entitled<\/em> can be used in both senses but must be done so within limits.<\/p>\n<p><em>Garner\u2019s Modern American Usage<\/em> states that in best usage <em>entitled<\/em> should be reserved to functioning as a past-participle adjective. For example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I read a book entitled <em>Huckleberry Finn<\/em>. (CORRECT)<\/li>\n<li>The article entitled \u201cAmerica\u2019s Moving Habits\u201d was a good read. (CORRECT)<\/li>\n<li>What did you entitle your book? (WRONG)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It goes on to say that as a transitive verb, <em>title<\/em> is preferred. For example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What did you title your book? (CORRECT)<\/li>\n<li>What did you entitle your book? (WRONG)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I think <em>Garner\u2019s<\/em> suggestion makes the most sense. Given the history of the two words, clearly <em>entitled <\/em>can be used in both senses, and it\u2019s also clear why <em>title<\/em> would be a preferred choice in certain circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a general rule in writing that simpler is better, and since <em>titled <\/em>is simpler than <em>entitled<\/em>, we can see why it may be preferred.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, as my college English professor used to say, \u201cA good writer knows when to break the rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Summary<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Despite what some people say, <em>titled vs. entitled <\/em>can both be used to indicate book titles, but in certain circumstances, as outlined above, one may be preferable to another.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a lot of information floating around about these two words.
