They are spelled with only one letter\u2019s difference, but they do not reference the same meanings. To make things even more complicated, <em>master <\/em>has more than one meaning, and one has dropped out of modern usage.<\/p>\n<p>Both <em>master <\/em>and <em>mister <\/em>are male titles in English. To whom does each word apply? What are the other possible meanings of these terms? To find out, you will have to continue reading this article, in which I explain the differences between these two terms.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the Difference Between Master and Mister?<\/h2>\n<p>In this post, I will compare <em>master <\/em>vs. <em>mister<\/em>. I will use each of these words in example sentences to demonstrate their use in context.<\/p>\n<p>I will also tell you a mnemonic device that will let you easily remember whether to use <em>mister <\/em>or <em>master <\/em>for a given person.<\/p>\n<h2>When to Use Master<\/h2>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-11477\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Definition-of-mister-definition-and-definition-of-master-definition.png\" alt=\"Definition of mister definition and definition of master definition \" width=\"400\" height=\"115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Definition-of-mister-definition-and-definition-of-master-definition.png 400w, https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Definition-of-mister-definition-and-definition-of-master-definition-300x86.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>What does master mean? <\/strong><em>Master <\/em>is a title for an underage male. If a person is under 18, <em>master <\/em>would be used. Once a person turns 18 and enters adulthood, <em>mister <\/em>would be used.<\/p>\n<p>Today, however, <em>master <\/em>is antiquated and appears only rarely. Where a title is necessary, <em>mister <\/em>is more likely to appear for both children and adults. See the example below for a possible usage.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cMaster Pippin, the headmistress complains that you have shirked your studies again to go rollicking on the hillside,\u201d accused the butler.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Master <\/em>has other functions as a <a href=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/grammar-dictionary\/noun\">noun<\/a>, an <a href=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/grammar-dictionary\/adjective\">adjective<\/a>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/grammar-dictionary\/verb\">verb<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As a noun<\/strong>, <em>master <\/em>can also mean <em>one who is in charge of something<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few examples,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI am the master of my fate!\u201d screamed Cecilia.<\/li>\n<li>Sir Commerford is master-of-arms here at the castle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-11480\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/master-mister.png\" alt=\"master mister\" width=\"400\" height=\"115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/master-mister.png 400w, https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/master-mister-300x86.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>As an adjective<\/strong>, <em>master <\/em>means <em>having or showing very great skill or proficiency. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>For example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I am the master printmaker here at the studio.<\/li>\n<li>In prints, Segers was both a master technician and a visionary, besotted with color, fascinated by the textures possible with both the etching needle and other processes like the sugar lift, which he invented. \u2013<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/03\/09\/arts\/design\/a-dutch-masters-surreal-visions.html\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>As a verb<\/strong>, <em>master<\/em> means <em>acquire complete knowledge or skill<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>For example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I need to master my piano skill before I play publicly.<\/li>\n<li>In order to master my English, I visit Writing Explained.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>When to Use Mister<\/h2>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-11478\" src=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Define-mister-and-define-master.png\" alt=\"Define mister and define master \" width=\"400\" height=\"115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Define-mister-and-define-master.png 400w, https:\/\/writingexplained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Define-mister-and-define-master-300x86.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>What does mister mean? <\/strong><em>Mister <\/em>is <em>a title for an adult male<\/em>. Its abbreviation, <em>Mr<\/em>., is much more widespread than the spelled out word.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few examples,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cExcuse me, mister, could you spare some change so I can make a phone call?\u201d said the man at the pay phone.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMr. Ambrosio told me to tell you that he mailed the package two days ago,\u201d said Taliesin.<\/li>\n<li>The talented Mr. Schoff will now demonstrate the use of his patented flameproof jumpsuit.<\/li>\n<li>The driver lets him out just south of Nashville, and when the speaker in the song calls him Mister, the gaunt figure at the wheel says there\u2019s no need, that everyone simply calls him Hank. \u2013<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/books\/author-captures-the-brief-wondrous-life-of-hank-williams\/2016\/12\/01\/ec557e4e-b80f-11e6-a677-b608fbb3aaf6_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Washington Post<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An entirely different meaning of <em>mister <\/em>is <em>a device, such as a bottle, with a nozzle for spraying a mist of water<\/em>. Choose <em>master <\/em>for someone who is in charge of something.<\/p>\n<p>If you are writing period fiction, you could also use <em>master <\/em>as a title for a male who has not yet come of age.
