Tutorial Time!

How much description is too much? Or too little

Hello Lovely Substackers!

It’s 3pm on a sweltering Saturday afternoon - not the best day for the air con to be out of action :(

I hope you’re staying cool and taking advantage of the heat to enjoy some reading or writing time.

For those who are paid Substack Subscribers one of the 2026 bonuses is a quarterly tutorial on an aspect of writing craft. The first one is on Using Description in Your Writing.

In the attached video I include loads of excerpts as examples and discuss the reasons why we might choose to use a lot, or a little, description in our narratives.

Examples include excerpts from a range of genres including literary, crime, fantasy, romance and more. There’s also an optional exercise to help you model the amount of description you use on your favourite writers.

If you’re a paid Writes4Women subscriber I’d love to hear if you find this tutorial useful and would love suggestions for other similar tutorials.

Happy writing!
