Happy New Year

We did it! We turned the page! How were your celebrations? I was up WAY too late and Tigger didn’t take that well! It was well past his and my bedtime so he was making that known!

Remember I’m not going to work on any calendars this year but will set some kind of a schedule to be popping in. I’m going to edit my one article just a bit more this morning before I submit them and maybe even read a book. Dinner with my parents tonight and, possibly, my whole family! Road conditions permitting!

Here’s the New Year gift I wanted to share with you. I hope you enjoy!

The Magic of Christmas (A Goderich Christmas Short Story)

Pamela Clayfield

Snow drifted softly over Goderich’s Courthouse Square, settling like powdered sugar on the rooftops, wreaths and the Christmas lights that glowed against the winter sky. The smell of cinnamon, fresh baking and coffee floated from the nearby bakeries.

Mia Thompson tugged her mittens tighter as she stepped out of the Goderich Sun office, where she’d just dropped off her latest column and assigned articles. Of course, she’d email copies so the editor could just copy and paste it into the layout but there was still just something about the hard copies that made it feel like the good old days when newspapers were cherished by readers and went to press twice a day. Now most people just read it online.

She looked around the square. She loved this time of year — the extra kindness, the bustle, the lights, the way the lake seemed to shimmer with its own quiet magic as it fought against the elements trying to turn it to ice. But this Christmas felt different. She couldn’t explain it, only that it felt like something was… waiting.

As she crossed toward the Square’s towering Christmas tree and got close to its beautiful branches, she noticed something odd: a tiny envelope tucked into the lower branches, sealed with a silver snowflake sticker. Curious, she plucked it free.

Inside was a small card, handwritten in looping script:

“For the one who believes in Christmas magic. Follow the lights.”

Mia blinked and looked around. What is this? She wondered. A scavenger hunt? A prank? A promotion for one of the shops? She looked around the square again as though there would be some hint but there was nothing. Something about the note felt… warm, inviting. It was almost humming.

She followed the string of twinkling lights that wrapped around the Square, leading her past the bakery, past the bookstore, and down the street towards the lighthouse overlooking Lake Huron. The wind was crisp, but the sky was clear, and the lake reflected the moon like a sheet of silver.

There, resting on a nearby bench, was another envelope. She sat down next to it and reached out. It too was sealed with a silver snowflake sticker. Gently sliding her thumb under the sticker, she watched as the flap flipped up and she slid the small card out. This time it was an actual Christmas card. Bears skated on a frozen pond. She smiled and opened the card.

“Clue #2: Look where the town gathers to skate.”

Mia’s first thought was the community centre, but it was a little too far to walk. Then she smiled despite herself. The outdoor rink in the park. Of course.

She stood and gave the lake one last look before she turned back towards the square, boots crunching in the snow. The rink was quiet, lit only by the soft glow of the overhead bulbs. And there — sitting right on the bench where skaters laced up their skates — was a third envelope. She was getting tired, and a little cold, and wondered how many more there would be.

She sat down next to it but as she reached for it, a voice behind her said, “I was hoping you’d find that.”

She spun around, startled.

A young man stood there, bundled in a long navy coat with a burgundy scarf, cheeks pink from the cold. She recognized him — sort of. He worked at the bakery on the Square. She’d seen him handing out gingerbread samples during the Christmas parade.

“You?” she said, laughing. “Are you the Christmas mystery mastermind?”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “Guilty. I’m Evan. I, uh… I read your column every week. You always write about finding the magic in small things. I thought maybe you’d enjoy a little magic of your own.”

Mia felt her heart warm. “This is… honestly the sweetest thing anyone’s done for me. But…”

He nodded toward the envelope cutting her off. “Go on. Open it.”

She, once again, slid her thumb under the flap to release the snowflake sticker and flipped it up once again.

“Final clue: Sometimes the greatest magic is simply meeting the right person at the right moment.”

Mia looked up, breath catching. Evan’s eyes sparkled like the Christmas lights reflecting off the ice.

“I know it’s a bit cheesy,” he said, “but I thought… maybe we could get hot chocolate? And talk? I’d like to get to know the girl who believes in Christmas magic.”

Mia laughed softly, feeling that same humming warmth from earlier — only now she knew exactly what it was.

“I’d like that,” she said. “But how did you know it would be me finding all the envelopes?”

“I was relying on people being too busy to notice plus I was only a few steps ahead of you,” he explained with a wink.

Evan offered Mia a gloved hand and, after thinking a moment, she placed her mittened hand in his.

As they walked back toward the Square, the lights above them flickered — just once — as though winking at them. And if Mia had turned around at that exact moment, she might have seen a tiny shimmer of silver drifting down from the sky, like a snowflake that glowed from within.

A little North Pole sparkle, blessing a new beginning.

Because in Goderich, especially at Christmas, magic always finds the people who believe in it.

Of the year. Of 2025! It has been a year, hasn’t it? How has your year gone? For me, for the most part, I’m glad it’s over. Working on Performance Reviews, never a fun thing to do, but so far, they’re not so bad! I came home from work early because of the weather and I’m glad I did. Can’t see the highway staying open for much longer.

Tomorrow I will post, without the calendar prompts, because there will be a little Christmas story I want to share with you. My 2026 gift to you.

Let’s get to the prompts and then I can go make supper.

Gratitude for the Past Year for today is What you’re proud of from this year… When I look back just on my accomplishments in both jobs and as a writer. Opening a second assisted living unit and hiring the staff needed for it early in the year. Watching the team meld together as one and basically function as its own living force. Reaching out to the Goderich Sun to inquire about writing for them and getting a YES! Writing a trilogy and getting it published. And my three little bear books! Now, after three months, and working on performance reviews, I’m starting to see positive changes! I’m starting to see that team in the early stages of coming together a bit better and what has been a change in what the reviews would have been when I started there. Thankfully I didn’t have to do them then!

Year Gone, Achieved Nothing for today is Ways you were your best self this year… I feel like I alluded to that yesterday… looking at the other calendar, I did! So I’ll leave it at that.

Okay, well, tomorrow we turn over a new leaf! We start fresh! I turn my One Line a Day over again for its fourth year! I’m still not sure the book is going to stay in once piece for two more years but it’s not doing too badly.

Whatever you’re up to tonight, I wish you safe and fun celebrations. It will be the two of us here watching the ball drop. We’ll, well Larry, pop the cork and make a champagne toast to 2026!

Here’s my toast to you… May 2026 bring you health, joy, hope, love and peace!

See you next year!

Okay, Another Quick One

Made it to work, via a ride in the truck. People have to start listening to me and retaining what I say! So I don’t feel like I’m talking to a barn door.

So, this came up last night… is there such a thing as an adult storybook? NOT a graphic novel that looks like a comic book on the inside, an actual storybook where there’s one drawing per page but maybe more writing? I’m asking for a friend!

We have company arriving in ten minutes so I gotta get to the prompts and go put some lipstick on!

Gratitude for the Past Year for today is A time you felt you were your true self this year… that’s the easiest so far. All summer while I was writing, writing, writing at the trailer.

Year Gone, Achieved Nothing for today is A heartwarming interaction from the year… I think what warms my heart is spending time with loved ones but it really warmed my heart that day in Dollarama when I helped that shopper look for all the stuff in his order that he couldn’t find.

I’ve managed this in a few short minutes but I’m sure I need to remove this from the dining room table so I better get to it!

Vacation Day…

In some ways I’m glad to have this fifth day but it’s a very blustery day and I have staffing to consider. I think that’s the worst part about all of this for me. I finished the book that I needed to read for Book Club and, hoping none of the residents have found their way to my blog yet, it was kind of a let-down! I won’t ruin it for you but it was kind of disappointing!

Anyway, seeing as I haven’t had breakfast yet (the chef is on a mini-vacation), I thought I’d sit and write to you. My entire day, for now, is free, so maybe I’ll dive back into some writing!

Gratitude for the Past Year for today is What about the year gives you hope going into next year… that it won’t be a repeat of events. That things will work out way better. And maybe I’ll get another Benji & Blue book AND another novel done.

Year Gone, Achieved Nothing for today is A beautiful moment in nature from this year… oh my, there were some pretty exceptional sunsets. I’d like to say Northern Lights but, unfortunately, I never, not once, managed to get out to see them despite the number of times it was announced they should be up. Sometimes I was in the city but the lights in the subdivision here are also too bright. The only good place is the trailer and the number of times I saw they were going to be up and then it was cloudy and rainy… well, let’s just say it got boring!

I just had a thought about my Mysteries of the Past series. I’m wondering if, even though I’d only be writing book four, if I should just wrap it up. Just give myself the closure on it. Move on to other projects. I also have to write again for the Sun since the deadline will be this Friday!

Okay, I’m going to go shower.

A Day for R & R

Got up early to a very bossy kitty cat. He’s been mostly weird all day so far including begging for food from Larry now. Today is nothing. And it feels good to sit, watch Christmas movies, read, do whatever I want to do. I could go take a nap even! It’s pouring rain here but I see that there are places that are getting dumped on with freezing rain! I’ll take the rain and even the, gulp, thunderstorm that is appearing on the weather map right now.

So let’s get to the prompts.

Gratitude for the Past Year for today is A word that summarizes what was positive about the year… Settling. That’s all I’m going to say!

Year Gone, Achieved Nothing for today is A memorable journey from the year… I think that goes back to making the nine minute drive from here to the trailer on May 1st. I had come up Wednesday night after dance class, car loaded, and raring to get out of bed the next morning because it meant we were opening the trailer! That journey was something else on the Wednesday night in the dark and the Thursday morning. Hopefully there will be many more of those!

I’m going back to the hot chocolate that’s probably not hot anymore!

Until tomorrow!

What a Day…

Yesterday driving down was awful. And so much for getting there early to play cards, or video games or both! I felt awful! Next time if there’s a stop to make, then allow time for it. On the road for two and a half hours just to get there! Slow drivers, snow plows, it was crazy!

We’re madly cleaning up today so I’m doing this before I have to move my laptop to the bedroom.

Gratitude for the Past Year for today is Your favourite photos from the year… now that’s a great one because I just had that print order done! Elvis concert number one, the sunset photos from the back of the boat, the shot I got of the living room after we decorated that I got compliments on saying it looked like a magazine!

Year Gone, Achieved Nothing for today is Lifelong goals and achievements you’re still working toward… writing full-time and not having to worry about going out in the snow on bad days, and just spending the hours doing what I love to do and barely get time to do.

So that’s that. We have Christmas again this afternoon so I will now shift my laptop into its second home. Which will eventually become its first home but all those things are the things I need to settle into a routine for!

Until tomorrow!

It’s Not Over!

For me anyway! I have the luxury of celebrating Christmas with more of my family today! Weather permitting… funny how the forecast changes so much isn’t it? A week ago we were getting above 0 temps and no precipitation… great for travel. Four days later… sorry, we’re adding crappy weather to the mix!

Last evening was wonderful and special. Set up the train. Didn’t get much more accomplished… oh, I finished that book! It was neat. I can’t say I’ll read it again next year but it was fun! How did you like the short story?

Let’s move on to the prompts shall we?

Gratitude for the Past Year for today is One vivid memory from the year… ah, another repeat… I don’t really do vivid all that well these days! I have one but I’m moving on from that! The look on Larry’s face when I showed him the published copies of Benji & Blue. That was awesome!

Year Gone, Achieved Nothing for today is Decisions you made this year, big and small… let’s see… early in the New Year I decided with management the way it was at that place of work that I would start the search in earnest and a couple months later decided that when I found the way out, I would not be giving two weeks notice, I would merely leave a letter in my office and the mailbox of the GM stating I would not be back. I had my reasons. I also decided to use AI for the storybook illustrations. Lastly, I decided to write and publish all together, a romantic-mystery novel. And that was actually fun. I also decided to cold-call the Goderich Sun and look what happened there!

I guess that’s it for today. Have a terrific Boxing Day no matter what you’re doing today!

Until tomorrow!

Merry Christmas!

We made it! It’s here! Can you believe that? With months of gratitude if you’ve been following along with the calendars! And today is the day… my gift to you… but not until I get to the prompts.

Gratitude for the Past Year for today is What you love about the people you’re with today… right now I’m just with Larry and Tigger. Later, I will be with my parents and daughter too! They really are my life. They are the ones who show up. They are the ones who I love unconditionally. Family means the world to me.

Year Gone, Achieved Nothing for today is Ways the year was the same as last year in a positive way… I assume that is Christmas specific. I think the only same part as last year was all the same people… my family.

And the last of Advent Calendar Gratitude for today What makes today special for you?… It’s Christmas. There really isn’t a day of the year any more special than that. But it gives me the chance to spend the time with family. Spend the time with loved ones celebrating.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas as you visit with friends and family or remember those who have gone before. This is my gift to you. A fun little short story and, if you’ve been reading my posts, you’ll know the source! Enjoy!

The Teddy Bear Toss
Pamela Clayfield

Snowflakes swirled in the wind outside the arena as the crowds lined up for the annual Christmas Teddy Bear Toss hockey game. The stands were filling up; the air buzzed with carols and the smell of hot chocolate and popcorn while the promise of holiday magic lingered softly.

Emma, bundled in her navy coat with her red scarf snug around her neck, sat near center ice where she used to sit with her grandfather at almost every game before he passed away many years before. While her own father had enjoyed the game, it wasn’t the same passion she and her grandfather shared so this had become her thing, and she did her best to get here as often as she could though that had been pretty infrequent lately. Her work as a photographer kept her so busy that sometimes months would go by before she could get here. But, no matter what, she always made it for the teddy bear toss game.

After tucking her bag of teddy bears under her seat, she sat back to watch people make their way to their seats all around the ice pad. Her hands wrapped around her cup of cocoa, another tradition she’d shared with her grandfather. This time she was here alone after all attempts to bring someone failed. But she didn’t care. She loved this tradition—fans bringing stuffed animals to throw onto the ice after the first goal, all donated to children in need. Those sitting around her were accustomed to her appearing in their section and included her in their high fives and always made sure to catch up with her.

The crowd roared as the puck dropped and again minutes later when the home team scored. Emma jumped up, like everyone else, and flung her bag of bears as hard as she could, joining the hundreds of teddy bears flying through the air like a blizzard of plush joy. Emma laughed as her bears just cleared the glass and landed on the other side. She pulled out her phone to take pictures until one particularly enthusiastic toss from behind her landed squarely on her head and she dropped her phone.

Startled and rubbing the back of her head, she looked down at the culprit: a soft brown bear wearing a tiny Santa hat. She bent down and picked it up along with her phone, smiling despite herself and still rubbing her head.

“Sorry! That was meant for the ice, not you,” a male voice called from behind her. Emma turned to see a young man about her age a few rows back, cheeks flushed from the cold and embarrassment. He wore the team’s jersey, his grin sheepish but warm.

Emma held up the bear. “Well, he found me instead.”

He climbed over those in his row then hurried down the steps, running his fingers through his hair. “I guess fate wanted him to deliver a message.”

“And what would that be?” she teased.

“That I should meet you, of course,” he said, eyes twinkling like Christmas lights.

Emma laughed and felt her heart skip a beat. Around them the crowd chatted and took pictures as the trucks drove onto the ice and the players helped load the thousands of bears. The rink was buzzing with holiday cheer and carols echoed through the speakers. She handed him the bear back, but he shook his head.

“Keep him, he’s yours. You earned him!” he paused to chuckle. “A Christmas gift… from me, accidentally. Maybe even an apology?”

She couldn’t help but laugh and nod her head, accepting the apology. She hugged the bear close, feeling the warmth of the moment all the way to her toes. When all the bears had been collected the game picked up where it left off but Emma hardly noticed. She and Daniel spent the rest of the night talking, sharing stories, and sipping cocoa together because she let him sit in the empty seat next to hers.

By the time the final buzzer sounded, Emma realized something: sometimes love doesn’t arrive with mistletoe or carefully wrapped presents. Sometimes it comes flying through the air, disguised as a teddy bear wearing a Santa hat.

And that Christmas, Emma knew she’d found her true love—thanks to one perfectly imperfect toss.

It’s Christmas Eve!

I’ve been to work, home, had supper, went to a beautiful church service and home for a glass of wine and exchanging gifts! The look on his face when he opened the train… priceless!

Busy days ahead and I’m exhausted and so glad to get five off in a row to regenerate! Need it… bad!

So let’s go on to the prompts… White Christmas is on.

Gratitude for the Past Year for today is A moment of kindness you experienced this year… There were several. I can’t point out all of them but I know my past staff, especially the daughter of a resident reaching out to me and me calling her mom. She spoke some of the kindest words.

Year Gone, Achieved Nothing for today is Something you’ve made progress on… keeping my camera out, taking pictures and sorting them and ordering prints to put into albums or even onto the walls!

Second last Advent Calendar Gratitude for today is A beautiful memory from the year… Halloween at the trailer and Doug’s band playing. The one that was moved inside and we had a blast! Just out on the dance floor… feeling great and so alive!

Well, one more of the Advent calendar to go and that will be tomorrow.

Enjoy the rest of your Christmas Eve as beautiful and gracious as it is.

Until tomorrow.

Two Days…

Are you ready? Oh my! I finally am. And tonight we drove around Goderich and looked at all the lights! Soooo pretty.

So how are you feeling going into Christmas Eve? When we wake up in the morning it will be such a short time until the big day! Can you believe that? YAY! But, like I say every year, it’s so depressing how quickly everyone calls it over a day later. There’s none of that Christmas spirit that lasts. Everyone wants to make it go away. Sigh.

Well, let’s get on with our prompts.

Gratitude for the Past Year for today is A road trip you went on… tonight we just went on a short road trip and looked at the lights and that’s the road trip I’m going to stick with because it was so pretty with the lights and the Christmas music playing in the truck.

Year Gone, Achieved Nothing for today is New things you tried this year, even it it was just once… okay, the only thing I can think of is I tried AI! I tried it when I was struggling with writing altogether and needed that boost because I had ideas of what I wanted. It turned out it wasn’t bad. It gave me a base from which to work from.

Advent Calendar Gratitude (which will end in two days) for today is Something new you tried this year… okay, so we’ll just leave that alone! Been there, done that!

Since it doesn’t seem like we’re watching anything to do with Christmas tonight I’m going to go finish off my Christmas movie blog and maybe get to finalizing that thing I’m going to share with you!
