WordPress – automatic sharing of a new article

In this article, I will show you step by step how to automatically share a new article on selected social networks when publishing in WordPress. Specifically through the Jetpack plugin . It provides the automatic sharing function in the free version. WordPress auto sharing can save you time.

WordPress automatic sharing

Step 1: Installing the Jetpack plugin

After logging in to the WordPress administration, I go to Plugins -> Add new :

I enter Jetpack in the plugin search field:

add jetpack plugin

I’ll click Install now and then I activate the installed plugin by clicking Activate .

activate the jetpack plugin

The Jetpack plugin is from Automattic , the company behind wordpress.com , and its founder, Matt Mullenweg, is also the founder of WordPress.org itself.

We can consider this plugin as high quality and safe. Jetpack can also do many other things, which I will gradually show you in the next articles.

Step 2: Linking the Jetpack plugin

After installing Jetpack, you need to connect it to wordpress.com by clicking Connect to WordPress.com :

connect jetpack plugin

Create an account or connect with an existing one by clicking Approve :

approve jetpack plugin

After successful connection, you need to choose a plan. In our case, the free version is enough for us. We choose it by clicking on Select Free .

jetpack select plan

Note: As you could see, Jetpack also has many other useful features in premium plans such as spam protection, backup, virus scanning, easy site migration, SEO tools, google analytics integration, support and many others.

In the next step, the Jetpack plugin will ask us if we want to automatically activate its functions. There I put Skip this step , but basically it doesn’t matter:

jetpack activate functions

After clicking Skip this step, Jetpack throws us into its message board. This completes the connection successfully.

Note: Despite the fact that I skipped the automatic setting, Jetpack also activated other unnecessary functions. I can turn them off in its settings.

Step 3: Setting up the Jetpack plugin

In this plugin, automatic sharing to social networks is handled by a module called Publicize . We get to its settings via Jetpack -> Settings -> Sharing tab.

jetpack plugin settings

Here we will check if we have turned on WordPress automatic sharing of articles – Automatically share your posts to social networks . If not, we will activate this option.

Next, we click on the link Connect your social media accounts , which is located under this setting.

Here we have the opportunity to choose which social networks we want to share our articles on. We give Connect to the networks we require:

jetpack connection to social networks

When connecting, social networks will ask for confirmation. We confirm it by clicking on Connect :

jetpack confirm connection

With some social networks, you will also have the option to choose whether you want to make WordPress automatic sharing available to social networks for other logged-in users of your website – such as authors, editors, admins and the like.

This is useful for sites with multiple people working on them. This option can be activated by checking the box Do you want to make this connection available to all users of the blog :

publicize access to the editor

With this, we have successfully joined social networks. From now on, every new article is automatically shared on social networks. Just click the Publish button.

Step 4: Automatically share the article

After writing the article (even before its publication), we can choose which social networks we want to publish the article on and set the sharing text.

We can find this option on the right next to the article editor:

possibilities of publicity

By clicking on Edit details , we can choose whether we want to share the article on all social networks or only some.

publicize the sharing text and hashtag

Click Publish to publish your new article and it should automatically be shared on social networks.

Step 5: Verify that sharing is working

We open individual social networks and check whether the sharing was successful:

Facebook shared article

Yes, it’s there! WordPress auto sharing works successfully for me. On Facebook, I also see an illustrative image, accompanying text, a hashtag and an excerpt of the article.

If necessary, you can find more detailed documentation at this link .

WordPress auto sharing – conclusion

I hope this guide has been beneficial for you. Personally, such WordPress automatic sharing saves a lot of time. In case you have any problem with setting up Jetpack, don’t hesitate to write in the comments. Sharing will be appreciated 🙂

Final SEO tip: I intentionally included a hashtag in the shared text preview. I recommend that you use 1-2 relevant hashtags in your posts. It helps from an SEO point of view.
