WordPress users follow various techniques to secure their site as being one of the most popular platforms, WordPress is also targeted the most by hackers. Among these techniques is the integration of Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificates to a WordPress site.<\/p>\n<p>SSL is also essential in <a href=\"https:\/\/wplift.com\/best-wordpress-multisite-plugins\">WordPress Multisite<\/a> setup as multiple sites are managed by one admin, and an infected site can also affect other sites on the network. In this article, we will explore how can we add SSL on <a href=\"https:\/\/wplift.com\/wordpress-security\" >WordPress Multisite to ensure security<\/a> across the network.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lets_Encrypt\"><\/span>Let\u2019s Encrypt<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I will be using Free SSL by <a href=\"https:\/\/letsencrypt.org\/\">Let\u2019s Encrypt<\/a> for WordPress Multisite Network. It is a certificate authority which provides free SSL certificates to websites that offers the same level of security as paid certificates do. It has great documentation and is very simple to integrate.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Integrating_SSL_to_WordPress_Multisite\"><\/span>Integrating SSL to WordPress Multisite<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I have launched WordPress Multisite installation on <a href=\"https:\/\/wplift.com\/cloudways-hosting-review\">Cloudways managed hosting<\/a>. After the application launch, I navigate to <strong>activate Cloudways built-in SSL certificate<\/strong> via Let\u2019s Encrypt integration tool and add email an address and a domain name of my parent site.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-75704\" src=\"https:\/\/wplift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image1-1024x496.png\" alt=\"SSL on multisite\" width=\"1024\" height=\"496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wplift.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image1-1024x496.png 1024w, https:\/\/wplift.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image1-300x145.png 300w, https:\/\/wplift.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image1-768x372.png 768w, https:\/\/wplift.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image1.png 1340w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It will take a few minutes to activate the SSL on our domain. Once it is activated, the main site can be viewed using https.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Switching_for_HTTP_to_HTTPS\"><\/span>Switching for HTTP to HTTPS<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It is very important to change internal URLs from HTTP to HTTPS. To do so, log in to your <strong>WordPress Dashboard \u2192 Settings \u2192 General<\/strong>. Change HTTP to HTTPS in both <strong>WordPress Address (URL) <\/strong>and <strong>Site Address (URL)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-75711\" src=\"https:\/\/wplift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image8-1024x395.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wplift.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image8-1024x395.png 1024w, https:\/\/wplift.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image8-300x116.png 300w, https:\/\/wplift.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image8-768x296.png 768w, https:\/\/wplift.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image8.png 1312w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Click on <strong>Save Changes<\/strong> at the end of this page to complete the process.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mix_Content_Identification\"><\/span>Mix Content Identification<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the previous step, I manually changed the URL from HTTP to HTTPS. Usually, it&#8217;s enough to change the URLs. However, it is recommended to check if all the links have changed to avoid any broken links.<\/p>\n<p>For this purpose, we will use an online tool called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jitbit.com\/sslcheck\/\">JitBit<\/a>. Simply paste the URL and initiate the scan. It will take a moment and will display the result.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-75705\" src=\"https:\/\/wplift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image2.png\" alt=\"SSL Settings\" width=\"989\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wplift.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image2.png 989w, https:\/\/wplift.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image2-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/wplift.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image2-768x417.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 989px) 100vw, 989px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Result shows that there are few links that need to be changed. To fix this, go ahead and install a plugin <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/wp-migrate-db\/\">WP Migrate DB<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-75712\" src=\"https:\/\/wplift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image9.png\" alt=\"wp migrate db\" width=\"759\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wplift.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image9.png 759w, https:\/\/wplift.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image9-300x128.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 759px) 100vw, 759px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the plugin is installed, go to its settings and paste the old URLs under <strong>Find<\/strong> section and replace it with the new ones.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-75710\" src=\"https:\/\/wplift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image7.png\" alt=\"migrate db\" width=\"931\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wplift.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image7.png 931w, https:\/\/wplift.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image7-300x183.png 300w, https:\/\/wplift.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image7-768x468.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 931px) 100vw, 931px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Add additional rows if needed and click on <strong>Find &amp; Replace<\/strong> to save the changes.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Redirect_from_HTTP_to_HTTPS\"><\/span>Redirect from HTTP to HTTPS<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It counts as a bad user experience if the visitor lands on a broken link, so it is important to redirect the user coming from HTTP to HTTPS automatically.<\/p>\n<p>To achieve this, we have to make a few changes in our .htaccess file. For those who do not know .htaccess. This is a configuration file for Apache web server.<\/p>\n<p>Before we begin making changes in the .htaccess file, it is recommended to back up this file for restoring purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Now access your .htaccess file from your root directory and open it in any text editor. Add the following lines of code at the beginning of the document.<\/p>\n<p><em>RewriteEngine On<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>RewriteCond %{https:X-Forwarded-Proto} !https<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https:\/\/%{HTTP_HOST}\/$1 [R=301,L]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it! Save the file and upload it back.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Google_Search_Console\"><\/span>Google Search Console<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As of now Google knows that you serve your data using HTTP.
