Our goal is to keep your site running smoothly, so for this reason we\u2019ve made certain plugins disallowed. If you have one of these plugins, you\u2019ll be notified and the plugin will eventually be removed from your site. We\u2019ve broken these plugins down into groups to provide some context as to why they cannot be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Disallowed Items<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By no means are we suggesting any of these disallowed plugins are \u201cbad\u201d plugins. Some of them, like related posts plugins, can be great for content discoverability. As your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/managed-wordpress-hosting\/\">managed&nbsp;host <\/a>for WordPress, our primary concern is to provide the fastest and most secure&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/\">hosting<\/a> experience we can. These plugins have proven that they will negatively impact performance or security on our platform and we\u2019ve made the decision to prevent their use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for insecure plugins, we try to work with the plugin developer to have them corrected. During that time the plugin may temporarily be added to our disallowed list and we\u2019ll happily allow it again once the issue has been addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have any questions about these disallowed plugins, or feel a recent update to a plugin has been put forth to correct the issue we\u2019ve banned it for, please <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/support-contact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contact our Support team<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"caching\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Caching Plugins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Caching plugins can conflict with our platform\u2019s built-in caching structure. These plugins are known to cause direct conflicts and would ultimately impact your site\u2019s ability to load if used:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>WP File Cache<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>W3 Total Cache<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the caching features these plugins offer we have built-in to our servers by default as part of your managed hosting experience on WordPress. We have your back- don\u2019t worry!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"backup\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Backup Plugins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We discourage the use of backup plugins as they needlessly bloat your site and can store files in an insecure way. Many of these plugins also run their backup jobs at inopportune times, slowing down MySQL queries and even causing timeouts on your site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following backup solutions are disallowed plugins:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>WP DB Backup<\/strong> \u2014 Needlessly bloats your site\u2019s local storage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>WP DB Manager<\/strong> \u2014 .htaccess protection is recommended, but local storage usage is the major concern as it only offers a local storage option.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>BackupWordPress<\/strong> \u2014 Duplicates a large number of files on local storage that are already in our backups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>VersionPress<\/strong> \u2014 In order to function this plugin needs access to server level functions that we disallow for security reasons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We take&nbsp;nightly <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/support\/restore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">backups of all WordPress websites hosted with us<\/a>. These are done in an efficient, automated manner and the data is kept securely on a separate server from your WordPress install. Our automated backups do not count towards any plan local storage limits and we make these backups available for you to restore, copy or download as-needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Backups tools that are not already excluded for performance reasons and store data on an external server can be utilized if a third-party solution is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"thrashing\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Server &amp; MySQL Thrashing Plugins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These plugins we disallow because they either cause a high load on the server or create an excessive number of database queries. They will directly impact server load and ultimately hinder your site\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>MyReviewPlugin<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Slams&nbsp;the database with a significant amount of writes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>LinkMan<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Much like the MyReviewPlugin above, LinkMan utilizes an unscalable amount of database writes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fuzzy SEO Booster<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Causes MySQL issues as a site scales up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>WP PostViews<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Inefficiently writes to the database on every page load.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tweet Blender<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Does not interact well with caching and can cause increased server load.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To track traffic in a more scalable manner <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/googleanalytics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Analytics<\/a> work great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend that you use one of the following tools to check your site for broken links.&nbsp;As they are not plugins these will not have a negative effect on your site\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brokenlinkcheck.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Broken Link Check<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 Online, limited to 3000 pages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/wummel.github.io\/linkchecker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>LinkChecker<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 Windows, Mac &amp; Linux<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peacockmedia.co.uk\/integrity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Integrity<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 Mac only<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"relatedposts\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Related Posts Plugins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost all \u201cRelated Posts\u201d plugins suffer from the same MySQL, indexing, and search issues. These problems make the plugins&nbsp;<strong>extremely<\/strong>&nbsp;database intensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ones that we\u2019ve banned outright are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dynamic Related Posts<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SEO Auto Links &amp; Related Posts<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Similar Posts<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Contextual Related Posts<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are dedicated services which allow you to offload related post functionality to their servers.&nbsp;We advise that you look into one of the related post services instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.relatedpostsforwp.com\" target=\"_blank\">Related Posts for WordPress<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.outbrain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Outbrain<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/contextly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Contextly<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"duplicate\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Duplicate Behavior Plugins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Like the caching and&nbsp;backup plugins, the following plugins also&nbsp;duplicate things that we already do for you in a more efficient, scalable, and configurable manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>No Revisions<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 We disable revisions for all customers by default. See <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/support\/platform-settings\/#Post_Revisions\">our Platform Settings article<\/a> for more information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Force Strong Passwords<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 We already install &amp; activate this plugin for you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bad Behavior<\/strong> \u2014 This plugin attempts to block a number of hosts that we already disallow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"email\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Email Plugins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just because you are able to send emails with WordPress, that doesn\u2019t always mean you should.&nbsp;We want our customers to experience the same best-in-class experience with email as we provide with web hosting, so we recommend using a 3rd party service. Specialized services like&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/mailchimp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MailChimp<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.constantcontact.com\/\">Constant Contact<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aweber.com\/\">AWeber<\/a> and countless others offer complete email solutions for your business and will provide you with optimal results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your domain\u2019s email provider offers its own SMTP server, you are welcome to configure that as your outgoing server. Be sure to&nbsp;check with your email provider about their bulk mail, opt-in mail and anti-spam policies before doing so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve also written a blog post about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/support\/using-3rd-party-email-provider-send-mail-wordpress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sending email blasts with WordPress<\/a>&nbsp;if you would like more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/support\/using-3rd-party-email-provider-send-mail-wordpress\/\" target=\"_blank\">Further information on configuring third party email hosting can be found in this guide.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Miscellaneous Plugins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Other plugins that we\u2019ve decided to proactively remove include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hello Dolly!<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>WP phpMyAdmin<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Disallowed due to a fairly major&nbsp;<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.sucuri.net\/2011\/06\/wp-phpmyadmin-wordpress-plugin-delete-it-now.html\" target=\"_blank\">security issue<\/a>. We also offer phpMyAdmin access without a plugin from your <a href=\"https:\/\/my.wpengine.com\">User Portal<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sweet Captcha<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 After our partners at Sucuri <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.sucuri.net\/2015\/06\/sweetcaptcha-service-used-to-distribute-adware.html\">revealed<\/a> that the Sweet Captcha service was used to distribute adware, we have decided to follow the WordPress Plugin Repo\u2019s lead and ban the plugin outright.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Digital Access Pass (DAP)<\/strong> \u2014 While we do not actively remove this from sites, please be aware that it will not work properly on our platform due to its use of PHP Sessions and System-level crons. Instead, we recommend using one of the other highly-rated Membership plugins like <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/paid-memberships-pro\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paid Memberships Pro<\/a>, <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/restrict-content\/\" target=\"_blank\">Restrict Content<\/a>, or&nbsp;<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/s2member\/\" target=\"_blank\">S2Member<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional Scripts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some frequently used scripts are known to contain security vulnerabilities. Our platform&nbsp;scans the files system periodically&nbsp;to identify and either patch or remove these scripts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>TimThumb<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Older versions of TimThumb are known to contain vulnerabilities. When our system scan identifies an older version, it will automatically update the script. After the upgrade has been completed, the system will notify you by email.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Uploadify<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Access to this script is blocked due to known security threats. The reasoning behind this was largely informed by&nbsp;<a title=\"Sucuri on uploadify\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.sucuri.net\/2012\/06\/uploadify-uploadify-and-uploadify-the-new-timthumb.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this blog post<\/a>&nbsp;from our partners at Sucuri.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Complete List of Disallowed Plugins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the files and folders that we explicitly searching for when we scan for disallowed plugins. Please bear in mind, the common names of plugins can similar and can be changed by the author. These modules\/functions can impact performance or security if enabled and are therefore turned off on all WP Engine servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We do not disallow plugins utilizing these because developers will often release updates that no longer rely on poorly performing modules or functions.
