Corrupted Classic Toolbar 2
-
I have had a long conversation at …/Corrupted Classic toolbar/, but it is closed, so I have to make a new post, since it is far from clear what I should do.
My problem is how to add to my website so that the first thing visitors see is a content list with short preambles under the headline. Until last fall i could do that with the Classic Toolbar, but that crumbled completely. Since then I have been able to do the same thing, copying the whole new page as …./2/ and put a link to it on the first page, the one that will contain only headline and preamble when I have erased the long text. But now that opportunity seems gone too.
So what is the standard way to do this?
Friendly people have tried to help, but they all seems to be convinced that I am a computer nerd that understands every technical word, even in English which is not my mother tongue. But I am not, I’m just a regular guy that wants to share my interests and being dependent on a tool that is easy to use. User-friendly, as they used to say before enshittification set in.
If any of you who read this will help me, please tell me in baby talk every step I will have to take, and where it is located on the page. Then perhaps it will sink in.
And, by the way, I use Firefox 115.33.0esr on a Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It is completely understandable that moving away from the Classic Toolbar feels like a step backward in user-friendliness; the transition to the modern “Block” system has changed the language of website building, making a once-simple process feel unnecessarily technical. To show a list of stories with short preambles on wiklundsjanne.wordpress.com, the standard method is to use the “More” tag, which acts as a manual “chop” in your text. When you are writing a post, you simply type your preamble and then click the black plus (+) button to search for and insert the “More” block, which looks like a dashed line; everything above this line will appear as your preamble on the front page, while everything below remains hidden until a visitor clicks to read further. To ensure WordPress respects these short summaries, you must also go to Settings → Reading in your left-hand menu and ensure the option for “For each post in a feed, include” is set to “Excerpt” rather than “Full text”.

Thank you. I found the More button! But there is an awful lot of them, they aren’t easy to find without instructions!
Concering the left hand menu, do you mean the menu showing up when I press the + button? That’s the only left hand menu I can find. But I can’t find any “Settings” there (it may have another name in Swedish, but I may find it and translate if you tell me under which headline it is).
-
Please. I can’t find Settings – Inställningar in Swedish. Neither can I find Reading which would be Läsning in Swedish. Are they really under the + button??

@wiklundsjanne There are two different things here:
One is to insert the “More” block when you are writing a Post. You can click on the + sign and choose “More” or simply type
/morein the editor itself and then Enter. That will insert the block. The other setting can be found as @themagicrobot said, under Settings>Reading>”For each post in a feed, include” and here choose Excerpt and click the button at the bottom to Save Changes.

I find “More”, but I can’t find Settings (or Inställningar in Swedish). And themagicrobot’s picture seems very alien to me. Where do I find it? It doesn’t look like what I find under +. Sorry I don’t find the attachment button so I can’t send a picture of what I find – it’s a superlong list, certainly more than fifty options …
And please, use baby talk. I am no master of English computer language. A step by step pointlist would suit me well.

Hello again, Glad to know you found the More block.
Settings>Reading is not under the plus sign in the Editor. Settings can be found in your site’s full Dashboard at wiklundsjanne.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
Since I don’t know how the URL appears for internal dashboard pages in languages other than English, I’m not sure of the direct link, but in English the direct link would look like wiklundsjanne.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php
Here’s the support page in Swedish https://wordpress.com/sv/support/lasinstallningar/

No worries, my Editor is in English, just that my website, the one that contains the + button is in Swedish.
I just found the Settings there, thank you very much. I ticked Excerpt instead of Full text, and I hope I now can go on and publish.
Another thing, now when I have you on the line: Far down in the right column at my website there is a blogroll I can’t touch. When I and a friend started the whole thing in 2012 it was easy to put things there or change it, but that function disappeared rather soon, say about 2015. Now I can’t change, or even abolish the whole thing that is now hopelessly outdated. Where is the function?
And, by the way, ads pop up all the time, some of the readers object to it, but how can I get rid of them?
-
Where is the function?
Sadly, the old Links widget is deprecated. If you try to change anything, it will disappear. There is a Blogroll block, but it behaves very differently from the simple Links list. Staff have suggested the List Block as an alternative.
how can I get rid of them?
The only way to remove ads on a WordPress.com site is by upgrading to a paid plan. Having said that, WordPress.com does not use pop-up ads. If you or your readers see such ads, then a computer scan is recommended to make sure there’s no malware there.
-
Thank you for the answer. Where is this List block? Under the + or at the Editor?
And no, it’s not ads from WordPress, it’s from whatever and completely uninteresting, has nothing to do with the content of the blog. Just a nuisance.
Next time a reader complains I will quote you.
PS I succeeded with the Read more tag. Thank you again.

List Block: The list block can be inserted in any widget area. Have a look at this support guide https://wordpress.com/support/widgets/
Since you’ve resolved the issue with the More block, if you have other questions, I suggest opening a new forum thread.
