First and foremost, thank you! Yuletide is something I look forward to every year so I hope you'll have fun with it too. I've tried to talk a little about what I like about the characters I've requested and suggested some possible story ideas but if you have plot bunnies of your own, let them run wild!

I'd prefer something that has a happy ending and is fairly light, i.e. no angst, death, dark themes, etc. I listed some characters in pairs, but if you'd rather write about friendship rather pairing them, that's fine. If you got the prompt Sunless Skies, dark themes to the extent the game has them is fine. Teixcalaan Series - Arkady Martine -- Mahit/Three Seagrass

I read this book recently and absolutely loved it. The events go by in such a blur, though, so I'd love to see Mahit and Three Seagrass getting the chance to interact without anyone trying to murder them for an hour or two--either in the City or on the station or by message. I loved how well they worked together and how quickly they were able to establish a rapport in spite of how different their backgrounds are. Really I'd love to see anything about these two--there's so little fic for them. A scene before Mahit leaves Teixcalaan or when they first see each other again after the events of the book or correspondence from the time in between. Is Mahit getting used to Yskander? How is Three Seagrass adjusting to her new job? Do they miss each other (yes, I hope ;).

Enchanted Forest - Telemain/Morwen

I loved how the third book in the series really focusses on their dynamic. You get to see very clearly how Morwen, in spite of her impatience with Telemain, is really concerned about him when he's straining himself with the transportation spells and then when he gets knocked out in the swamp. And then in the fourth book she has to patch him up again and somehow that leads to off-camera marriage proposal. They're a bit of an couple, but they work so well together and that always made me smile. I also love Morwen's cats and Telemain's inventions and tecnobabble. I'd love to see some sort of story whether pre- post- of during canon where they have to work together on something-- a problem in the forest, one of Telemain's experiments, or even a new recipe of Morwen's. Or just a scene of what they do when they're not chasing wizards, or what they did during the intervening years between books three and four. Or anything else that comes to mind. And of course feel free to add in any other cast members you'd like.


Sunless Skies -- The Felined Eccentric

The Felined Eccentric was one of my favourite crew stories in the game. I love the "Encounter with the Eccentric" scene, how they work quietly and companionably together. And I also find the scene with Paimon really funny, how he separates them when she sits next to the captain. I'd love to see anything about her travels on the locomotive--a day-in-life, a strange adventure, a problem with cats--anything really. And I'd love to know more about her feelings about what's she's become, about the remnants of her past following her in feline form, or about how she feels about the captain and crew since it sounds like it's her first time having companions.

I'm fine with the level of weirdness and vaguely violent events in the game but I'd like to avoid anything super dark or gory. Also, if you end up including the sky captain I'd really appreciate a female captain. And of course, feel free to add in any other characters you'd like.


Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego (1994) -- Carmen/Ivy

Stardew Valley
Leah/F!Farmer

I really love that Leah is an artist who left everything to live in a cabin and sculpt weird statues. It's also a nice parallel to how the farmer left her awful desk job to take over a rickety farm. They both drop everything to pursue their dreams and at the outset they're both outsiders in the town. It's lovely that the farmer is supportive of Leah's dream and they're in such a similar situation.

I'd enjoy seeing anything with these two, whether it's romantic or platonic–-a quiet moment where they're enjoying each other's company, or a trip into town, or Leah getting a tour of the farm maybe? How has meeting each other changed their outlook on their work? What did the farmer do with the sculpture Leah gave her? Or anything else that comes to mind.

I said no "dark themes" above, right? So obviously these stories are creepy and spooky but they're not hideously violent so basically if it keeps with the theme of the books and the same middle-grade level ghost story that's totally fine. As for Lucy and Lockwood, they're by far my favourites in the series and I'm also sucker for stories where friendship develops into romance. I love how companionable they are in the last book and how it ends with the necklace.

A story about what happens after book five would be fantastic, whether it be Lowood and Lucy figuring out their feelings, or the Lockwood and Co. on a case, or just hanging around Portland Row. If you want to have any of the rest of cast drop in go for it–I love all of them. Here are some random ideas but feel free to go with whatever strikes your fancy: a scene where they get to meet Holly's "roommate"; one of George's research projects gone awry; a run-in with an overcurious journalist; side effects of their journey through dark London. Or something else completely! I just want to spend more time with these awesome characters and see Lucy and Lockwood get to spend some time together.


House of Many Doors -- Harmony Ricketts

I love the bizarre world they created for this game: the strange locales; the fact that so many people in the House have come from other worlds, some of them like ours, and some very different; the mix of human and non-humans trapped there. I'd love to see any of the game's locations and lore show up. There so much weirdness and it's all fantastic.

The one thing I should mention is that while the game does deal with a lot of gorey and terrible events, it does so in such an understated way that it's not distressing to read. So please feel free to write something weird and creepy and unsettling, but I'd appreciate it if you'd didn't push it any further than the game does.

Harmony's story was my favourite of all the ones I've seen. I'm not sure why but it was weirdly fascinating to see her transform herself. And I really love that the player/captain gets to save during her final procedure. How do the other crew members react to Harmony's transformation? Does she ever properly thank the captain for all her help? What else does she want to see or do in the House? How does she even sleep with all those spikes in her back? Tell me any sort of story about her and feel free to toss in any of the other characters.

Magical Diary – Virginia

So here's the thing about Virginia: it sounds very much like she's on the asexual spectrum. Magical Diary was the first time I ever came across an ace character in a game and I can't tell you how happy I was with how they handled her character and the romance. I love both how Virginia expresses her discomfort, and how (assuming you choose to pursue the route with Virginia) the main character respects that, she respects her feelings and is willing to pursue that relationship even if it unconventional.

I'd love to see any story about Virginia whether it be on the romance path or not. Random ideas: A regular day with her hanging out with MC; telling her family about her school year; what does she do during break? Does she keep pursuing her dream of being an athlete?

House of Many Doors -- Fiona

I wish I had nominated this since I could have added more of my favourite characters, but, to be honest, I wasn't sure about nominating something that didn't have a single fic written yet. I'm in the middle of the game right now. I've explored everything that's not locked and been through several of the locked doors, but I'm putting off finishing the game to do more of the crew stories.

If I recall correctly, Fiona is a native of the House, born and raised in Fargyle Keep. I'd love to hear about her travels and adventures either before/during/or after she joins the kinetopod crew. What does she do with the sword she finds? What did she do before we meet her? Does being a native rather than a transplant change her perspective on what it means to live in the House? And I'd love to see any of the game's locations and lore show up. There so much weirdness and it's all fantastic.

SMT IV: Apocalypse Flynn/Isabeau

One of the things I found fascinating/distressing about the game was the way this alternate version of the story sort of hijacks Flynn's neutral ending from the original game. Basically instead of him getting to be the hero, he gets kidnapped and turned into a passive victim (and ultimately an enemy) until the very last phase of the game. His story gets hijacked and derailed by Nanashi. The whole thing must have been really difficult for Flynn to bear once he woke up and realized what had happend.

Meanwhile, Isabeau had to deal with her closest friend–and the only connection she still has to her home–being taken captive. We don't see her as much as I'd like in the game, but when we do it's obvious that she's really worried about Flynn. And then that whole thing with the fake Flynn. I always wonder if she blamed herself for not realizing he was a fake.

So yeah go ahead and write something that takes places during the game or after the neutral ending. I ship them but even if it's just camaraderie or friendship, I just want to see more of these two and get more insight on how the story looked from their pespective.

Matt Cruse – Matt/Kate

I only discovered this series a few months ago and loved the mix of adventure, alternate history, with a dash of romance on the side. One of the things that I found really interesting about the dynamic is how much Matt respects and admires Kate’s intellect and her desire to be a scientist. Even though women don’t yet have the vote in their world, he always takes her seriously and never belittles her because she’s a girl. Of course he’s also keenly aware of her flaws. He knows her better than anyone and accepts her as she is. So yeah, I’d love to see something that takes place after the series finishes. An adventure if you’re feeling ambitious, or just a quiet domestic moment between them maybe. It would also be interesting to see a bit more of their world, just to find out what's going on. Have Canada and/or France gone back to space? Did the suffragettes make any headway?

Radiant Historia – Stocke/Raynie

The thing I found really interesting about these two is that to get the good ending (and their ending as well) you have to go through all the dead end nodes. The implication, I think, is that Stocke experiences all the wrong paths and remembers them, including the one where he stays with Raynie in Skalla. They spend a year together and then Stocke has to go back and try another path. He would remember that year even though she wouldn’t.

Admission: I only just started book three–but I’ll be done soon so no worry about spoilers but I am, at present, a little behind.

As for Lucy and Lockwood, they’re by far my favourites in the series and I’m also sucker for stories where friendship develops into romance down the line. Busy if it’s present day to the series then friendship is just fine since they’re pretty young and busy dealing with the Problem. A story about an adventure of theirs or what they do on typical day or just what happens when they’re sorting through all those sources and other knick-knacks in the house–pretty much any goes!

First, a quick question... Does anyone around here besides saffiremoon21 use Tumblr as a personal or fandom blog? If so, how's that's working out for you? I like Tumblr for pics, but it seems a lot less comment-friendly than LJ.

Also, in an attempt to keep myself sane while working on my revision, I'm going to offer to write propmts... for the two or three people who still read my LJ.

Oh my gosh. I just realized that, for reasons unknown to me, everything in my story starts with the letter M.

- I have a central character named Marilyn.

- I somehow managed to name two of the MC's relatives Margaret and Martha.

- There's a brief scene with a character named Melanie.

- MC attends the fictional Macpahil Public.

- An important scene occurs at the fictional Emily Murphy building.

For anyone who was around the last time I was working on a second draft, you might remember a number of posts wherein in wailed and grumbled about it.

It's Saturday night. Instead of working on a fresh new scene, I have to fix stuff. I have this one bit I got to where I have a third of a page crossed out because there's some dialogue I no longer need and there's a section where I need to switch around who says what. My first reaction: Oh my gosh! Crap! How do I fix this?

Revising skillz. I don't haz them.

So I finally, finally finished my first draft, months overdue. I already know I need to change a bunch of things before I can show it to my readers but hopefully it'll be quick.

I meant to be finished ages ago, but I've been so low-energy this year and then I got the flu in March and was laid up for a week and half--used all my sick days--and was tried for ages after. Turns out my iron was really low. Feeling a lot better now. Actually, I feel a lot more like myself.

I'm still not sure how things will go with my readers. A couple of my friends volunteered but neither of them reads much young adult fiction and one of them... well she reads things that make me cringe. In fact she finds my cringing very amusing and keeps threatening to wallpaper my cubicle with pages from Twilight. :/

Also there has been much playing of Mass Effect 3--in spite of its having possibly the stupidest ending in the history of gaming. But the rest of the game was amazing so I'm pretending the ending never happened. I'm also weirdly addicted to Multiplayer. Go figure.

/latest update ever

So, last month I woke up at 4am on a Friday morning because there was a terrible whistling sound coming from the furnace. I immediately turned off the furnace and my mom had to call the furnance company and I had to take the day off from work. There were three other emergency calls ahead of us so by the time the technician came, eight hours later, it was -12C outside and 12C inside.

Anyway, long story short, the furnace fan was fixed, but today it started making the same sound and we had to call them again--luckily in the afternoon, and on a day I had off (civic holiday in Ontario). They had to replace the motor this time. Exciting. :/ *needs a nap*

Merry Christmas and Happy holidays to all of you enjoying festivities and vacations. I myself am finally, finally off (I was working until noon Friday). Things have been crazy the past few days and I'm exhausted so it's nice to finally have some time off.

I'm hoping to get some good work done on the tail-end of my original, fic but I also want to have a little fanfiction fun on the side. So, if anyone would care to participate here is a little drabble meme.

So has everyone survived finals? Must say that's something I certainly don't miss...

I'm still working on my YA novel. I expect it'll be a bit shorter than I'd first thought. I'm currently at 38.8k (and I'd bloody well better get to 40k tonight) and the first draft is looking like it'll be 50k or so, though I'm already aware of a number of things I'll have to flesh out in the second draft.

I keep vacillating between totally believing in it... and worrying about not being original enough, that the pacing is all wrong and I'm making the same mistakes as in my last novel, and whether I should've done it in the first person (since that's what everyone else is doing *groan*). Confidence FTW!

Then there's the matter of lining up readers when I get the second draft done. I've pretty well lost touch with the two people who read my novel, which is too bad as they gave solid feedback, but I don't think they read YA anyway.

In other news, I do want to submit a short piece for the latest fe_contest prompt. I've been trying to work on it on weeknights. Because it's a short, light piece I can manage to do it in spurts, which I've never been able to manage with longer fic. I can't stand writing guides that advise people to write a tiny bit ever day. I'm like: Screw that! I'm just gonna write a whole lot on weekends! *shrugs* Well it works anyway. I find I can't get any flow going if I'm only working for a short while.

I've been doing key word searches through the support and game scripts to look for info for some of my posts. In doing so I kept come across the phrase "ten years ago." Here's what was going on for our cast then:

Busy time for them all, eh? In fact it sounds like things were a bit unsettled at the time. It would make for an interesting fic, I think to try to link some of these events. After all, one of the great mysteries of FE8 is where these people got all their battle experience when there's supposed to have been 800 years of peace.

I thought of touching on Seth's age, but that seemed like beating a dead horse after the lengthy discussion of it on magvel. So instead et's go with a related topic.

Seth's age hinges on the fact that he was a squire ten years ago when Franz's father was killed. If FE reflects the real world (and yes, that's a huge 'if'), one becams a squire between the ages of twelve and fourteen. Wiki also has people becoming knights at twenty-one but clearly in FE they get knighted much earlier. How much earlier? Well what about Franz? As far as I can tell, he's a full knight, not a squire. Ten years ago, however, he was barely old enough to remember his father. What age would you put him at there? If we go at "six" it means you can be a knight by the time you're sixteen, which is awfully young.

Interestingly, if you go with the info in the supports, Kyle has been a knight longer than Seth. Seth was a squire ten years ago when Franz's father was killed; ten years ago, Kyle was attacked during a mission to Frelia and says that his attackers realized he was a knight. That puts Kyle at at least twenty-six.

To bo honest, I just think the script writers were sloppy about details, but to write fic sometimes you have to try to make sense of the senselessness, I guess. ;P
