Whatcom County

Whatcom County government provides an enormous variety of services to its citizens. There are nineteen county departments that provide or support the delivery of these services. Whatcom County is a Home Rule Charter County - one of only six in the State of Washington. The Home Rule Charter was adopted by 1978. The county covers 2119 square miles that border the province of British Columbia, Canada, to the North; Okanagan County to the East and Skagit County to the South and the Strait of Georgia to the West.

*Third Quarter 2026 Ferry Punch Card Sales & Exchanges* The Whatcom County Ferry Division has scheduled multi-ride punch card sales and exchange opportunities for the third quarter of 2026. Note: To provide additional purchasing opportunities during the busy summer season, the Ferry Division will offer one supplemental Saturday punch card sale and exchange opportunity per month. These seasonal events are not planned beyond summer 2026. • Saturday, June 20, from 6:50 a.m.–3:20 p.m. (additional second quarter event) • Wednesday, July 1, from 5:40 a.m.–2:40 p.m. • Saturday, July 18, from 6:50 a.m.–3:20 p.m. • Wednesday, August 5, from 5:40 a.m.–2:40 p.m. • Saturday, August 22, from 6:50 a.m.–3:20 p.m. • Wednesday, September 9, from 5:40 a.m.–2:40 p.m. All events will be held at the Lummi Island Ferry Office (island-side terminal). When punch card sales and exchanges occur at the same event, riders should expect two separate lines: one for punch card sales and one for exchanges. If only one purser is available, punch card sales will be prioritized over exchanges. Payments may be made by check, valid U.S. money order, or credit card. Cash is not accepted. *Plan Ahead for Increased Regional Travel During FIFA World Cup* Travelers may encounter heavier-than-usual traffic in some areas of Whatcom County from mid-June through early July as visitors travel throughout the region during the FIFA World Cup. Matches will take place in nearby Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. The tournament coincides with an already busy summer travel season. If you'll be on the road during this time, consider allowing extra travel time and staying informed about current road conditions. *Drayton Harbor Road Closed Weekdays June 8–19 Near Shintaffer Road* Drivers should plan for a weekday daytime road closure on Drayton Harbor Road just west of Shintaffer Road, at the location of the current single-lane closure. The closure is scheduled from Monday, June 8, through Friday, June 19, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. each weekday. Drayton Harbor Road will reopen during evenings and on weekends. The closure is needed for utility relocation work by Puget Sound Energy (PSE) in preparation for Whatcom County’s upcoming landslide repair project. A signed detour will be in place during closure hours. The detour is approximately 3.5 miles long and will add about one mile of travel distance. A detour map is included with this notice, and signs will be posted to help residents and visitors navigate the area.
