For the Love of the Game

For the first time in my short sport entertainment career (3 years), I finally got to work a big game. Last night Pettitte rehabbed with the Trenton Thunder. Preeeeetttty amazing stuff. Very chaotic and the most intense night of my life, but so much fun. It really added to what has been an amazing start to a great start to the Eastern League Playoff. BUT the entire thing brought up a good question: Is it fair for major league players to rehab during minor league playoffs? From the coverage of the game I've read, a lot of the players for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats have called foul on Pettitte's start; one went as far as saying it was a shameless move by the Yankees. On one hand, I understand where that feeling is coming from since it did put the Thunder at a possible advantage seeing how there was no need to worry about managing the bullpen. On the other, there is no way to predict how the game would have gone because Pettitte could have easily pitched his 4-innings and given up 12 runs.

My personal feelings on it is that the minors is about player development more than anything, yes, but with all the moves that happen, there is no way to really complain about the ones that favor a team. There are so many moves up and down that someone is going to have an advantage in a good system. For example, take the Yankee affiliate in Scranton: their playoff rotation came mostly from the Thunder by the way of September call-ups. It's the same rotation that won the Thunder the Eastern Division. On the same turn, the Blue Jays farm system, of which the Fisher Cats are a part of, has kept players who deserve to move up (and have even sent down) for the chance of winning a minor league championship. Of course, Pettitte is a bit different since he his arguably one of the best lefties in the game, but I still do not believe you can take a win away from a team because of a rehab ('specially when only one run was scored and that was on a walk-off solo bomb in the 12th).

What are your thoughts on it? Should MLB players be able to rehab during MiLB playoffs? Is it right? Does it even matter?

QUESTION OF THE DAY

If you could trade one player from your roster for anyone else on any other roster (including those currently on the DL or rehabbing), who would you want and who would you give up to get him?

You can answer for as many teams as you follow, or like, or care about. And as many trades as you want. But let's make it a tiny bit realistic. I mean yeah we'd all like to say.... steal Cliff Lee and a solid reliever for a young first baseman and a prospect, but that would never happen....

Just because we're female...

...Doesn't mean that we can't love baseball for the game itself (of course, some of the guys ARE hot;)). I'm sick of the guys who act like because we ARE female, we can't know and love baseball. Anyways, what are y'all's favorite team(s)? Detroit Tigers for me, though I love the Boston Red Sox and baseball in general. :)

The Aggies played a game at the University of Houston last week. It's always nice when the Ags come to town and I don't have to travel so far to watch them play. It was hot, hot, hot and humid, but the Aggies kicked off a six game winning streak with that game. (Working on making that seven as I type! Sixth inning, Ags up over KSU 7-3.) :)

Found this on Ben's Biz Blog. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (affiliate of the Brewers) were snowed out on opening day, and the team had a little fun. I like the batting at showballs, but am appalled—simply appalled—at the snowman violence. Ben has a few still photos at his blog.

Missouri Tigers at Texas A&M Aggies—March 27–28

The Aggies won their second Big 12 series of the season. They had an exciting come from behind win on Saturday. After the umpire robbed us of a run (everyone in the stadium but the umpire knew that our runner was safe), and down by one in the bottom of the ninth, Aggie first baseman Adam Smith hit a walk-off double to drive in two runs and win the game. Really quite exciting. More behind the link.

Location: Contrary to the first statement I made I'm actually not from Texas. Raised in Illinois but I've been a Wisconsinite for the last 5 and a half years.

Birthday: December 4, 1989

Favorite team(s): Is this baseball exclusive? Just to be safe... Milwaukee Brewers and the White Sox.

Favorite players: Way too many to even begin to list. But Ryan Braun, JJ Hardy, Ben Sheets, Prince Fielder, and Geoff Jenkins are my top 5

Favorite baseball memory: Getting my first ball. I was 12, the Brewers were playing the Astros. My dad and I got there during the Astros warm up time, we were sitting four rows up off third base and one of the players gave me the ball he'd been using to warm-up with.

Favorite part of the game: The energy and enthusiasm the fans have for their team and the players. Feeling the warm sun during a day game. The fireworks and lights during a night game. And what true Brewer fan would leave out Bernie Brewer?

What made you get into the game? My dad. It started when I was about a year and a half, I think? I'm my daddy's girl, he'd been watching games with me since I started talking. He took me with him to the gas station one day, the old 76 stations, and when I saw the sign from my car seat I immediately said 'Brewers!' Apparently the signs resembled the old Brewer logo and I've been in love ever since.

Any hobbies? (photography, writing, stat keeping, etc.): Writing/reading, music, rollerblading

Anything else you want us to know? Studying to be a high school history teacher. Love to laugh. Love to make others laugh. Also a huge football fan (Packers all the way... I know, I'm a disgrace as someone who spent the majority of their life in Illinois). Huge fan of movie soundtracks, I guess being a band geek will do that to a person.

When I got home last night, I looked at Wildmen03's game picture thread on TexAgs. I found a really awesome shot of Eagles left fielder Chas Crane. Now, we had been harassing Chas the whole weekend about his creepy mustache. This year, they're doing a sort of mustache tournament on the video board and every game we vote on two famous baseball players with mustaches (winner advances to next round). During these segments, we'd chant Chas, Chas, Chas! So when I saw this great picture, I decided that it would be really cool to print it out and get Chas to sign it for me! Before the game I went down and hung around the visitor's dugout working up enough courage to call Chas over. I almost didn't do it, but finally found some guts, and asked if he would sign a photo for me. He said, "I guess" and I handed him the photo and a Sharpie. He looked at the photo a few seconds before he burst out laughing. Then he showed it to a friend who was passing by and he started laughing too. Chas signed the photo, gave it back to me, and I thanked him. So... here it is:

Well, blinding_voip's post got me excited because it reminded me that college baseball season is just around the corner. NCAA D-I baseball starts on Friday! I'm declaring it a holiday, taking off work, and heading to College Station to take part in Texas A&M's Opening Weekend. I can almost smell it.

Happy first pitchers and catchers reporting day! (Yes, this is a holiday. Or at least it should be.) Within the next three or four days, all 30 teams will be reporting to their respective camps in Florida and Arizona.
