hi all, new to the "guild". questioning whether i belong.. i know how to use basic html code to produce a webpage. no xhtml or css knowledge here! i've been left with the task of promoting my mom's small business. i've made her a website and now i am promoting it with directories and search engines, etc.

couple questions.

1. i was going with simple. and that's good because simple is all i can really do with my web design knowledge. could having too simple of a website (text, hyperlinks, a few graphics) be off-putting to visitors?

2. what happens if google lists you under some awful keyword that you don't think anyone would ever search for? any way to change that?

3. any tips for promoting the website without paying money?

Hello.

I currently run and maintain a website using the Drupal CMS. I have been noticing that it takes forever to load pages, and I keep having issues with the system not sending e-mails out.

I have been looking for a PHP geek who wouldn't mind volunteering their time to build a custom system or even someone who could explain to me... what is easier / better for the site I want existing CMS system or a custom system.

Just reply if you want more information, or are up to sharing your thoughts on the existing CMS system vs custom system debate. :)

Thanks

xhtml (php) to doc (rtf) or pdf

Is there a way to convert xhtml formatted documents as a document/rich text file or a pdf on the fly?

I have looked at htmldoc, but it does not support css in the current release and even in the upcoming 1.9 release, only CSS1 tags are supported and not the positioning tags.

What I am looking to do is create my resumé in an xhtml 1.0 or 1.1 document and be able to have it convert to word or even pdf. All the agencies that have been contacting me have requested a doc format of my resumé. I have a doc (and pdf) version, but I hate having to do double entry and then save to pdf. I could save as html in OO.org, but I hate doing that. I like the clean xhtml resum&eacue;.

My resumé can be found <a href="http://www.lordjester.com/resume/>here</a>. Already, there is a revision difference on the technical resumé. Also, the non-technical version is not offered up in doc and pdf.

I have searched quite a bit and fond services, but they are using the aforementioned htmldoc toolkit. There is a lot of hits on rtf to xhtml, but not vice versa.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Is there any chance I could enlist someone's aid in putting together a phpbb style for a new forum I'm doing?

I'd like a dark, gritty, industrial feel to it.

I'd also really like the templates to be fully xhtml/css compliant, but that can be split into two tasks. One task is developing the artwork, which can simply be putting together a sliced psd file, and the other is making the templates. If you have artistic skills, or xhtml/css skills, I can use your help either way.

Here are a couple examples of themes I like to give you an idea. The top example is probably the best, and the theme I normally use is Zarron's Charcoal3Steel.

design - http://osc.template-help.com/forum_12926/
Charcoal3Steel - http://zarron.com/
side tabs - http://osc.template-help.com/forum_12882/
dance - http://osc.template-help.com/forum_11934/
Ambience - http://www.extremepixels.net/phpbb/index.php?s=35
Tren_z - http://www.extremepixels.net/phpbb/index.php?s=58
mechanical_creator - http://osc2.template-help.com:8081/forum_13468/

I like how some of these break up the layout with some white space, putting navigation tabs on the left, and utilize non-standard lines to break up the usual boxy layout of phpbb. Sometimes it is just the same blocky layout, but the graphics have nifty tabs and curves to dress it up.

The artist who helps me would obviously still own the work and would decide distribution rights of it as they wish.

Thanks for your time!

Hi Everyone,

The below was posted in my journal this morning. I was wondering if perhaps anyone here could assist in some way. Thanks.
____________________
I am thinking very, very seriously about shopping around for website providers for J. M. Jewelry Designs. If anyone maintains a website on a regular basis, or knows someone who does I would love to get the information about their provider. My current one makes me want to throw my computer out the window, and the thing is its not my computers fault. The provider is slow, your always needing to refresh pages because they won’t load, or you lose what updating you do because when you go to save it won’t save. Business is picking up to the extent now (which is good) to the point that I cannot deal with that web provider bullshit anymore. It takes me away from my business which is the exact opposite of what its function is for.

If business is too busy for me to set up the new site myself I may need someone to set it up for me and show me the logistics of the program once that is done. Naturally there would be compensation for such a service. Anyone interested in doing this also please forward their information.

If you can help with any of this please send information of website providers and/or individuals willing to set up the website to jmjewelry@gmail.com

Thanks all,

Becca

im using frames in dreamweaver 8. ive got 3 frames: left, bottom and center/main. im trying to target my links in the left frame. the thing is when i click a link in the left frame, i want the content in the center AND bottom frames to change. is there a way to make that happen? i only know how to make content in one frame change when you click a link.

basically i want to change the words that will be in the bottom frame every time the content in the center frame changes because they correspond to eachother.

Hi I'm looking for help for a major redesign of my own online stuff. MY problem is that whilst I'm fine with the html/css side of things I'm hopeless at the aesthetics of design. Given that I was working with a brilliant artist and so never worked at developing that side means that now he has gone off to do wonderful artist things, I'm stuck in a rut. If there is anyone who wouldn't mind putting their artistic talents to use leaving me to get on with the coding then please get in touch.

Hello all, I am totally new to this, but have recently bought my own webspace and am wanting to start an invision power board forum. The problem is, I am clueless and do not know how to do a thing! I had initially had some help offered, but am not sure that help is still available now as I decided to get the license for the newest version rather than mess around with an older, free version. I would be wanting a shoutbox integrated into the forum and any useful mods available for download. I also only have a half done frontpage,so it is a bit of a nightmare and a major disappointment to me.

Is there anyone who would be willing to help me out with this project, which is very important to me? Thanks.

Hey I am new to webdesigning...I have a few questions about getting a server.

-i use dreamweaver and I know I have to get a server for a remote site to upload my files to. I need to get a site that I can get a domain name for, and all that stuff. How exactly does that work?

-when i purchase a domain name and get a server, do they give me all the information and the password and all the stuff to type into the section for establishing a remote site?

-when i get the server, what would i select: ftp, local/network, etc..

-i dont need to get an additional file uploading program like cuteftp or anything if i have dreamweaver right? i assume i can just do the uploading straight on that program

sorry if these questions seem ridiculous, but i really just started learning and if you guys can help me out at all i would be so happy. any advice would be appreciated so much. thanks!

UK-based colocation?

Does anyone have any decent recommendations / is involved with UK-based colocation for servers? I've got several contacts in the US for it, and already do most of my colocation in datacentres over there, but I've got several clients who are requesting UK specific servers. However, most of the UK-specific colo services I've seen are downright extortionate for what they are. I don't require them to be managed, except for hardware maintenance where necessary, and that can be on a per-job basis if it comes down to it. Some of them are going to be fairly bandwidth hungry though.

Thanks in advance!
