Breast cancer is the most common cancer, other than skin cancer, among American women, according to the American Cancer Society. Breast cancer starts when cells in the breast start to grow out of control. Sometimes, breast cancer spreads outside of the breast to other parts of the body, such as the lungs or bones. This is called metastatic or stage IV breast cancer. The National Cancer Institute believes there are 155,000 women in the U. S. living with metastatic breast cancer.

We have a lot of pups in our area who need a new home. In this week’s To the Rescue, our friends at Colonial Capital Humane Society introduce us to Sierra, the 8-month-old that’s excited to play. Sierra is a coon hound and is very much still a puppy. She’s looking for a family that will take her out on walks and play with her.

Are you looking for a new addition to your family? Sylvie may be the dog for you. She’s our pup in this weeks to the rescue. Sylvie is a 5-year-old Shepard mix. Volunteers at Colonial Capital Humane Society in New Bern aren’t sure what she’s mixed with, but she has interesting markings. She is spade and heartworm free. “She will do best in a home with older kids or no kids. She’s a brilliant dog, she’s smart, she’s exceptionally trainable,” said a CCHS Kennel Tech.

In this week’s ‘To the Rescue’ segment, we headed to Colonial Capital Humane Society in New Bern to meet Poppy. She’s a pit bull mix with lots of love to give. “Poppy loves playing with her stuffies,” said kennel tech Maddi Newman, “She does like going on a walk she just needs a little bit of leash work. She is very food motivated so you can train her well with treats. ” Poppy came to Colonial Capital as an owner surrender.

In this week’s ENC hero, we are profiling a lawn service owner in our area who uses his talents for mowing to help ALS research grow. 14-year-old Cody Young may be young, but there is nothing green about him. In fact, he’s already owned a lawn service business for three years.

This week’s dog featured on To the Rescue is a sweet, energetic girl who would do great with a family with kids. Mona is a three-year-old pit mix. “Mona came to us as an owner surrender, but she is an awesome dog, she does great with other dogs, she does great with people and loves her attention,” said Maddi Newman, a Kennel Tech at Colonial Capital Humane Society in New Bern. Maddi said Mona loves walk and because she’s a little energetic, she’d do well with a family that has children.

A very gentle dog named Titan is looking for a family to call his own. Titan is a boxer Dutch shepherd mix, according to employees at Craven Animal Services. He’s about six-months-old. He was an owner surrender, he is very food motivated and listens well with treats. Titan knows how to sit on command and he’s potty. Titan needs to go to an active family, probably one with a fence so he has room to run without running anyway from you.
