The rebel. The Troublemaker.
The round peg in the square hole.

The one who saw things differently.

He wasn't fond of rules.
And he had no respect for the status quo.

You can quote him, glorify him, or vilify him.
About the only thing you can't do is ignore him.
Because he changed things.

He pushed the human race forward.
And when some saw him as the Crazy One,
we saw genius.

Because the one man who was crazy enough to think
he could change the world, was the one who did.

As most of you already know, the great innovator and genius of our generation lost his battle with cancer last wednesday. I've admired and been inspired by this man since I was old enough to walk, and I had been meaning to post this sooner. I am very saddened by his loss; my thoughts and hope go out to his family and every one his life has touched.

Please repost this or comment to this thread if you wish to add to this memorial.
Thank you Steve. We miss you and will never forget you.

*CLICK LINK BELOW FOR PRINTABLE PDF MEMORIAL BRACELET* I'm rocking mine!

(here.)

AS PROMISED.
HOW TO DRIVE STICK SHIFT TUTORIAL!

HERE. HAVE A MANUAL GEARBOX.

Why drive manual?
Aside from looking cool, adding another badass skill set to your repertoire, and being able to drive “better”, sexier cars, manual is effective, and often more practical in terms of operating your vehicle. Cars with stick shifts allow for increased fuel economy, and assuming you know what you’re doing, better road and car control. Another important factor is its role in reducing the monotony of driving; put simply, you pay more attention to yourself and the vehicle.

So now that you’ve taken the plunge and decided how to learn to drive stick, let’s take a second to review the basics:

Know where it is:
» Clutch
» Gas
» Neutral
» Reverse
» Emergency break

Eight quick steps:

1.	Get familiar with you’re the layout of your vehicle.

2.	Learn your gears: test them out.
● Start out by shifting them without the car running. Eventually it will become intuitive; remember, cars are manmade.
● Don’t rush. Get used to the feel of each gear. Practice them individually, remembering to push the clutch in each time.
● Practice by yourself, and/or with someone driving while you shift.
● Always put the stick all the way in gear. You’ll know it’s not in gear if the car makes a nasty “coughing” sound (gear too high) or a high revving sound (gear too low). Try to avoid these sounds. While learning, it is inevitable you’ll end up with one or the other at some point, but don’t make a habit of it.

3.	Start your car:
● Always put the car in neutral before starting, or you will stall. You don’t want this, because then you’d have to call me to come and give you a jump, and I’d probably be grumpy and charge ridiculous amounts of gas money.
● Be sure to start the car in gear with the clutch pedal pushed to the floor, then shift into neutral, and release the clutch pedal before letting the vehicle warm up.

4. Remember your clutch:
● Never pull your car out of gear without using the clutch, or releasing it before you’re completely in gear. This will cause the grinding sound we discussed. Said sound is to be avoided at almost all costs.
● The clutch is the pedal on the left. The brake is in the middle and the gas on the right. Use your left foot on the clutch and your right foot on the brake and gas, just like with an automatic car.
● Try not to accelerate when the clutch is partially engaged. This means avoiding holding the clutch in for more than a few seconds when stopped, or say, at a light. This is dangerous to the transmission, and eventually the engine. Instead, be sure to put the car in neutral while stopped for any period of time.
● Don’t pop the clutch!

5. Downshifting:
● "the act of moving appropriately to lower gears while slowing down." This is the basic difference between operating an automatic transmission and those of the manual persuasion. Downshifting both helps you slow the car, and puts you in the correct gear for the speed.
● Downshifting a good thing. You’ll need it in bad weather, or on hills; situations in which immediate braking can be dangerous.
● Remember that you can shift down only one gear, or just apply the brakes.
● Again, familiarizing yourself with your range in each gear will help determine what's needed in each situation.
● While downshifting, move from clutch to brake while in gear. This will help you slow down without revving too high between gears.

6. Reverse:
● Be very careful in backing up. The reverse gear is very quick, and in some cars it can jump out at you. Sometimes you may need to use a bit of brute force to shift completely. Nothing is wrong with you; some gearboxes just have sticky spots.
● Only do this when you are at a complete stop; no exceptions.
● The clutch is going to be your main control when in reverse, since your vehicle moves so quickly in this gear.
● Try not to lean on the gas too much; this will only increase your speed in reverse, and subsequently, decrease your control of the car.

7. Handling on hills:
● Find a hill with little traffic.
● Use your emergency brake when coming to a stop.
● When the light turns green to go, shift into first, start to accelerate slowly as you release the clutch pedal, then release the emergency brake just as you feel the car engage the gear. This way you are using the brake to keep you from rolling back.
● If you stall, put on your brake and start again.

8. Parking: DON’T FORGET YOUR EMERGENY BRAKE WHEN PARKING A STICK SHIFT CAR.
● There is no “park” gear to keep the car from rolling. You want your car to be there when you get back, I’m sure.
● In the majority of situations, pulling your emergency brake is enough, however, if you’re worried about it, best thing to do is to leave the car in gear and pull the emergency brake.

So let's review:

STEP ONE: Familiarize yourself with your vehicle
STEP TWO: learn your gears. practice.
STEP THREE: start your car. clutch, neutral, gas.
STEP FOUR: aways use your clutch when changing gears. do not pop the clutch.
STEP FIVE: move from clutch to brake while in gear. remember step four.
STEP SIX: come to a complete stop. back up slowly and carefully.
STEP SEVEN: pull your emergency brake when stopping. accelerate slowly while releasing the clutch pedal, then release the emergency brake.
STEP EIGHT: use your emergency brake. or, leave car in gear and pull the E brake
STEP NINE: do not pop the clutch.

Questions, guys? See somehing I missed? Tell me!

*I put my itunes on shuffle and choose the first line one minute into the song*

01:
"I went out in the rain suddenly everything changed"
-Bright Eyes, The First Day of my Life

CHARACTERS: Dean
RRATING: G

The difference between the air inside and outside strikes him as cruel, almost, not in the sense that he wishes it differently, but Dean isn’t sure if he likes the way his nostrils flare, humidity and water slapping him with the sensation that he’s floating, suspended somewhere between the hot asphalt and the purple sky, muddy with clouds.
The air pulses with it’s own heartbeat, and he thinks maybe he can hear it under the rough shuffle shuffle shuffle of denim on denim from his jeans.

It’s an interesting night, and the door to the Impala protests slightly as he opens it, as if it too is opposed to the fact that the passenger seat is empty, Sam’s shape carved into the leather, nothing (no one) filling the blank space.

Dean tells himself he doesn’t mind, but the rain slides around the edges of the black metal with a ferocity that reminds him of <s>anger</s>, <s>loneliness</s>, <s>recklessness</s>, something, and his covers unravels.

Rain rain go away, come again another day.

➝ Normally I'll do three, but my brain is DED right now.

➝ Also.
"cmpriest has written a scifi novel of epic and dangerous proport, and it's so awesome and I want y'all to read it so much, that I'm giving away an autographed copy.

boneshaker is the story of Briar Wilkes who lives on the outskirts of Seattle, sixteen years after the Boneshaker, an insane steam powered drilling device built by her husband to drill for gold in the Klondike, broke free from the laboratory and dug down under the city, piercing a pocket of deadly, poison gas that killed most of the city's inhabitants, but kept some others in a strange, crazed, not dead state of ravenous hunger for human flesh. Now Briar is forced to return to the city to find her son, the heady 16 year old Zeke who has snuck into old Seattle in the hopes of proving his father was not responsible for the catastrophic event which destroyed Seattle. In that ruined city, he is certain, there is evidence. What they both find is that there are others in the city, unexpected people who've formed a fiercely independent society living within the walls with both the help and the hinderance of a mad, reclusive inventor, Dr. Minnericht.

Cherie has produced a fabulous steampunk adventure (it's written in brown ink, that's how steampunk it is) and I want people to read it.

You will all no doubt remember back in August when i gave away a copy of chris howard's novel seaborn, this is going to work the same way. Here's how it goes:

To win this book, mailed to your door, write a short story in 350 words or less that involves Roswell and any mix of the following:

a) airships
b) mysterious deadly fog
c) zombies (they're called "rotters" in Cherie's book)
d) mysterious mad masked scientists
e) tunnels under Seattle
f) gas masks

boneshaker photographed with Roswell to Enhance Value

The final winner, as is our tradition, will be picked by Cherie Freaking Priest herself.

Contest goes until midnight SUNDAY, December 13th 2009. I can probably guarantee delivery by Xmas, continental US only. In the event of a winner from outside the con. US a substitute, but equally cool prize may be awarded."

Feel free to repost this to your own LJs

original post here

#137 - I knew

No
never mattered
Grit your damn teeth
Get on with it

Nevermind that I used to wish
I could be pretty

because the dust and the grime
build words on my skin
in the form of
ugly

It's fine
turn away
I'll just leave first
the pain comes creeping quieter that way

I trusted that you loved me
not in the tiny glass shard pieces
that sliver and fall away
like so many before

No
the first thing he ever told me
with darkened eyes
in that cold room
as my childhood slipped away

I never once dreamed
you could be like him

Did you ever guess that
that was all
I needed?
That the pain could dull away
with only that trust?

Did you ever guess that the cold fingers
of those unwanted boys
heard no
in just the same way?

Or that just maybe
all I needed to breathe
was the knowledge
that my agony
was shared?

There are ghosts in the eyes
of the ones i've loved
they haunt the corners of my dreams
and for so long I hoped I'd never find you there

#136 - I will break

it feels like years ago
that I stumbled bloody into this place
shards of land mine shrapnel in my skin like tiny stars
and felt your gaze pulling me
dizzily

until the bleeding pieces dropped away
and the deep
dark

blue

screamed my name

grease stained t shirt, and home in your eyes
while the world fell to pieces
you spoke my name like a praise

even through the needles that lived in your head and
the scars scrawled in your skin
you loved me better

"Nothing will ever change"

your taste still haunts me
I can feel you
on my fingertips

and beneath

my skin

And even before now, I've seen you
in dreams:
it's point and shoot
until it fills you

...Does it taste sweet, like me?

#055 - one pint

Did you know the body can survive
With a minimum of one pint of blood
For an extended period of time?

I never meant to hurt you
To leave you

Even though you left me

(Because you fought like hell
And I gave up)

I guess this whole thing was a joke
A fucking lie:

I was never like her
I say the word “pain” exactly the way he does

I cause it
And revel in the chaos
of destruction

So I’ll keep lying to you
And hope you never learn the truth.

But through everything, the one thing that remains is this:

I can’t drive fast enough
Fuck hard enough
Can’t drink and drink and drink enough
I can’t smoke myself through enough cigarettes
Or bleed myself enough
To kill this electricity that burns through my veins

Come on
Leave me
Like I left her too
Her blood is mine and they
Spill together

Leave
Before I do.

#054 - To you. After everything. Because you never left.

Have you watched the stars
Lately?

How their beauty
Fades and flickers
Like the used lamp
At the Ikea down the street?

Abandoned.
Used.

Their light has been extinguished
Years before it reaches our eyes

We tell ourselves we left that place months ago
Put it in our rearview mirror
But the truth is
I never really did

Can you see the cracks
The fragmenting pieces
Where I'm broken

Or do you still place me on your mantle
every night
Before you sleep?

I hope you never have to hear me say
I need you to need me.

Just close your eyes
I’m here
I’m never leaving.

If I’m
Fucking the world away
drowning in the alcohol
Or the fake smiles
If the smoke blots out my face
Don’t look

That’s not me bleeding
Breaking
Dying
-It’s someone else
With your name on her lips

I don’t want to be saved.

#053 - tiny little fractures

Do you remember that day
when you stood on the edge
of Hell
snd staring back said
not me?

You could have done anything
broken everything
but you just flipped your middle finger
-try and break me

If there is safety in numbers
then there is peace in your arms
the way you rock back on your feet
and smile wide

You know, I heard this Leonard Cohen song today
It made me think of you
your fingers dancing over the strings
how you never used a pick
(unless it was the one you wore around your neck)

I think it was you who said,
two weeks and three days ago (or roughly that)
that
Things change. Or they die.

And I decided I’d never seen anything so perfect
as your eyes when you laugh

I see your scars
in sleep
again and again
Flashes of pale pink
or invisible fractures
And waking, search for your hands
trace your lifeline

please don’t leave me here

I still remember the way you tasted
One a.m and three hundred miles away
from where we are
How everything drifted away from us
and faded into the background

I’ll forgive myself everything
If you Just promise me one thing
Just say
you’ll open that trunk

-When it’s all over
and play.
