I think it's likely that I'm just made of epic fail on this account, but for some reason, I'm totally defeated by the structure of this community. I can't really figure out what's what, and it's making it really hard for me to keep up. Since activity just exploded at one of my other comms anyway, and it's been keeping me running around like the proverbial headless chicken trying to keep up with plot, I think I'm going to go ahead and withdraw here. Sorry about this. Have fun, y'all.\

friend remove shima_wolf

-- Sonne

Right then, here's the deal: I just moved into a new place. We put in an online order for our cable service to be switched, but Time Warner did a massive flail, and apparently, I will not have internet until Friday unless I'm at my mother's house borrowing hers.

Friday, Ohayocon starts, and we are attending. So while I will presumably have internet, I will be otherwise occupied and therefore sporadic in posting. Hopefully by Monday everything will be back to normal, and in the meantime, I'll miss you all.

- Sonne

He's a couple years older than she. They started dating almost immediately and one night after a stupid decision involving too much alcohol and no condoms...well. When James found out Jody was pregnant, he did the stupid thing and ran. Back then if anyone asked why he did it, he'd say a hunters life is no life for a family but really he was just a scared stupid guy.

A couple years later, James is approached by a very pissed off Navia while James is in the shower. She demands to know what his problem is and tells him his son is in danger and it'll be James' fault if his 2 year old son Rory dies.

Rory was being chased by a Rumplestiltskin type demon after being promised by Jody's former employer that Rumplestiltskin could have the child in exchange for wealth. Jody fought the demon once and ran, travelling the states in an RV with her friend Marcus and his girlfriend Chelsea. James caught up with them towards the end and helped defeat the demon once and for all (with a little help from his telekinetic son, meaning his son guided the bullet that James shot at the demons head during its weakest moment. It wouldn't have hit the demons head right otherwise)

Since then, James has been at Jody and Rory's side. The PB I keep picturing him as is the lead singer from Maroon 5 but thats negotiable.

Please please please someone help us out.

On werewolves

What's a werewolf, and how do I become one?

Werewolves are a breed of shape-shifters who change from human to wolf on the three nights that the moon is at its fullest. The other days of the month, they are normal humans with enhanced senses and stamina. They heal rapidly from mundane injuries, but those inflicted by magic or silver can be deadly, and take up to three times as long to heal than other wounds.

While in wolf form, werewolves are indistinguishable from natural wolves in every way. No human intelligence remains but memory. A wolf remembers what it’s like to be human, but does not know what to do with the knowledge. Otherwise, the wolf has normal wolf instincts and behavior. Once regaining human shape, the werewolf remembers everything that happened the night before.

A person can become a werewolf in one of two ways. Infection and birth. The condition is, on its most basic level, a virus. It can be transmitted through blood in both human and wolf form, and through saliva as a wolf. Wolves who were born with the condition are infectious in the same ways as others.

When the virus takes hold in the body, it changes the person on a genetic level, providing genes that parents can pass on. Lycanthropy is a dominant trait in heredity, so when a human and a werewolf mate, there is roughly a 50% chance that the offspring will be a lycanthrope. Since the genes don’t activate until puberty, there is no way for anyone to know whether or not the child will shift until they reach the age of 16 and either have or have not shifted by then.

When two wolves mate, however, there is closer to a 98% certainty that the offspring will be a werewolf.

Werewolf Society and You:

Pack and family structure among werewolves varies from location to location.

In New York City, there are five packs. One for each borough. Ironically enough, Manhattan’s pack is the smallest, as they have very little natural world to run around in.

The Brooklyn pack has very little land in its own borough to run about in, so they have worked out a deal with the Queens pack to use the Breezy Point area as its moonlight territory.

The Queens pack, the largest in the city, is centered around Beach Channel High School, as many members of the faculty are werewolves. The school is key to their structure as it is right on the edge of the Jamaica Bay wildlife preserve, which is their running grounds. (The NPC account for this pack is queens_pack)

The Bronx pack utilizes Pelham Bay Park as its primary territory, though the presence of humans in the area keeps their numbers fairly small.

The Staten Island pack makes its home on the islands of Hoffman and Swinburne, located off the south shore.

The first duty of a revolution
is to get away with it.
-- John Dickinson

NYC is divided into 5 regions called boroughs (each has its own governmental structure: there are borough halls in addition to the main city hall). The boroughs are Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and the Bronx.

Manhattan, the best known borough is an island that basically runs north to south in the Hudson River. North is referred to as "up" or "uptown", "upper", etc. South is called "lower" or "downtown". This is the way it looks on a map and also the way the numbered streets run. Upper Manhattan is Harlem. Lower Manhattan is the Financial District (Ground Zero, Wall Street, etc). City Hall is also there. In the middle of Manhattan is, well, "midtown", which is where you find most of the well known shopping (Macy's, Sacks 5th Avenue), Times Square, the Empire State Building, many of the better hotels, and the theater district (Broadway). Uptown from there is Central Park with most of the major museums bordering it (the Met, the Museum of Natural History, etc).

Some of the other descriptions are fairly obvious too. People refer to the area along the Hudson River as the West Side (Upper West Side or Lower West Side). Across the island along the "East River" is the East Side (again, upper and lower). On the lower west side is the Olympic Stadium, and Guardian Headquarters. That's also where the Port Authority Bus Terminal is. The other major transportation hubs are Penn Station in Midtown (directly below Madison Square Garden) and Grand Central Station (Upper East Side).

The main transportation is by subway. New York's subway system is quite good. It's also all based on Metrocards, which the Guardians use to access people's movements. You need a credit card or debit card to buy one. That's how the metrocard gets attached to your information. Cars have an EZPass box to pay tunnel and bridge tolls which provides the Guardians with the same information. The Guardians actively discourage the use of cash.

More places - Tribeca is toward Lower Manhattan, East Side. North of the Brooklyn Bridge. Used to be basically desolate, has experienced a comeback. Trendy restaurants and galleries.

Chelsea is in Midtown. It includes the Garment District. Lots of retail stores and wholesale distributors. Lots of clothing manufacturers.

SoHo means "South of Houston". Houston Street is pronounced "How-Ston", rather than like the city in TX. SoHo is another trendy artsy area. Lots of little nightclubs and art galleries. Chinatown is near SoHo too and the Village is North of SoHo, between there and Midtown/Chelsea.

For further NYC information and detailed maps, see this website

Locations:
These are some of the locations that may be mentioned in the game.

Whitetail Grove Apartments - an apartment complex in Flushing, Queens, on Auburndale Lane near Kissena Park / Very close by are three large cemetaries - Flushing Cemetary, St. Mary's, and Mt. Hebron. Hans Varner lives here.

Java The Hut - A coffee shop located on Auburndale Lane, directly across the street from the Whitetail Grove Apartments.

Burkowitz Books is in SoHo at Howard and Lafayette. Lafayette is a major thoroughfare, on the edge of SoHo adjacent to Little Italy.

The Mid-Manhattan Public Library is located on 455 Fifth Avenue at 40th Street.

Columbia University - Columbia University is heavily monitored for possible subversive activities, and all students are required to wear plainly visible ident-cards while roaming campus.

The Requiem - An underground goth club in SoHo, owned by the enigmatic figure known as E; a haven for counterculture types and a recognized area of neutrality amongst revolutionaries and Guardian oppressors both. E seems to have quite a few side ventures...

Ace Movers and Cleaners - An unassuming company in the business of moving people's personal possessions, cleaning up damage, and restoring things to their proper order. With the right connections, however, they also do services like removing evidence from a scene, clearing an area of psychometric emanations, enchanting an area with an aura of serenity, or exterminating nasty demon problems.

Petey's Perfect Packagings - A courier business for securing small parcels that can't be shipped through the mail normally. Rates depend on required delivery speed, distance, and parcel contents.

Freedom Tower - A large tower; the tallest building in the world, dwarfing the NYC skyline where the World Trade Center once stood. This is where the Guardian's main headquarters is.

Flushing Medical Associates- A clinic that is located at 1441 170th Street in Flushing. They have a sliding fee scale, from free to twenty dollars for those that can pay. They have a strict code of confidentiality.

St. Mary's/St. Dominic's High School - a Catholic high school in the heart of Little Italy. St Mary's/St Dominic's is a small private school, jointly operated by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and the Sisters, Servents of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (SSIHM). The Jesuits and the SSIHM are both renowned for their excellence in educational programs around the world. The staff is multicultural, with instructors from all over the world. 75% of the school's staff are ordained clergy. The school's primary focus is academics, with lesser focus on physical education and religious instruction.

Mount Sinai Hospital - One of the largest hospitals in New York, and on the bleeding edge in the medical field. Rumor has it that this is also a development zone for various top-secret Guardian projects...

Bucket O'Beer - A somewhat sleazy bar in the Bronx, frequented by toughs.

Essex Mountain Sanatorium -- Actually in Verona, New Jersey, this area has buildings that date back to 1873, and it was officially locked up on December 1st, 1982, and completely abandoned. Scheduled for total demolition in 2002, the building survived due to a combination of apathy and state budgeting concerns, and it is presently mostly forgotten about. In more recent times, the sanatorium has been used as a hideout for various displaced people.

Timeline

It is impossible to predict the time and progress of revolution.
It is governed by its own more or less mysterious laws.
-- Vladimir Lenin

Timeline
The current year is 2011 - nearly 2012. Most of the events discussed in this timeline focus on the USA, particularly the NYC area as this is where the game will be taking place. Whenever new information is revealed, or significant events occur in game, the timeline will be amended with that information.

2004
New York City makes a bid for the 2012 Olympic games, setting up a television and web-based ad campaign. Plans include the construction of many new buildings, including an Olympic village set up directly across from the United Nations. This facility will feature 4,000 apartments in a secure complex by the waterfront. Other venues are being constructed, or renovated, in a circular pattern with this village as the central hub.

2005
New York's bid for the Olympics is accepted, and construction begins. The forces of good are currently scattered, and often ill-prepared - crime, both natural and supernatural, is on the rise. An ineffectual president is in office, fighting a pointless war with a small nation on the basis of suspected terrorism. The terrorist threat (whether real, or merely implied or even exaggerated) has become a terror that affects many citizen's everyday lives.

2008
John McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin are elected to office. They begin to immediately crack down on human rights in a supposed attempt to stop the terroristic threat. Obama speaks out against these rights violations, and vows to run again in 2012.

2009
In response to these troubled times and the continued threat against humanity, an ancient race of seemingly benevolent beings known as Guardians arise from a long slumber under the earth. Stronger, faster, and more capable than humans, these creatures are hailed by some as civilization's salvation; by others a sign of the coming of the biblical end times. John McCain makes a statement that he supports the Guardian agenda one hundred and ten percent. Many other world leaders follow suit. Roe vs Wade is overturned; abortion becomes illegal again. Obama speaks out against the Guardians, and founds a group to fight against them. Within three months, he has been shot in a mysterious 'grass knoll' type incident - and the organization is hastily disbanded. The Guardians begin construction on Freedom Tower on Ground Zero, which they will use as their headquarters.

2010
The Guardians begin assisting local police forces in many large cities. Crime is at an all time low, but the media is beginning to shift, covering a majority of pro-Guardian topics. Funding to many arts programs are inexplicably cut, and censorship of books, music, and speech is beginning to rise. Creationism is being taught in schools, with Guardians at the top of the creation scale. Guardian Centers are opening up around the world - a combination community outreach and office building offering a youth program called Friends of the Guardians. Artists, musicans, poets and other creative types everywhere are starting to be seen as subversive and counter-culture. Atheists and non-Christian religions are becoming increasingly looked down upon by mainstream society. John McCain dies of a massive heart attack in office; Sarah Palin becomes president. Guardian control of governmental functions becomes increasingly more overt. It is suspected that many world leaders have been actively converted to the Guardian cause. Within the Guardian ranks, however, there is a small band of dissenters who disagree with the harsh politics of their leaders. This group is lead by a man known only as M5, and he refers to this group only as 'The Fifth Column'.

2011
People have begun 'disappearing' without a trace - first people who aren't entirely missed, but then, friends, co-workers, and occasionally... whole families. The Friends of the Guardians organization is beginning to implement survival and militaristic training. Some young people, upon coming of age, are being recruited into the Guardian ranks. In Sarah Palin's campaign for reelection, she reveals herself to be a Guardian - and proposes that this makes her the best hope not only for America but also for all of humanity. Fairly unorganized gangs of rebels have been forming in many cities. New York is gearing up for the 2012 Olympics.

Also in New York, an Immortal named Hans Varner calls together a small gathering of friends - planning to tell them a disturbing truth.

-- This is where gameplay picks up. The year is 2011, but time will otherwise run mostly real-time (ie: it is November, 2011 when it is November in our time)

Application

A great revolution in just one single individual
will help achieve a change in the destiny of a society
and, further, will enable a change in the destiny of humankind.
-- Daisaku Ikeda

Application
Please fill out this application in a comment (or comments) to this post. All comments are screened. We will contact you within 1-3 days and let you know if you are accepted or rejected. If you are accepted, please join both communities and welcome to the revolution! If there are problems with your application (ie: character concept is inappropriate for the setting, writing sample is vague or missing, etc.) we will let you know so that you can correct them and try again. Really, the only things that will get your application outright rejected are poor writing skills or a completely unfixable character concept (just say no to Mary Sue, kids!) I'm not unreasonable, but I do want this to be a quality game that's enjoyable for everyone.

Thanks for considering EOL for your gaming needs! Note - If this application is longer than your attention span, this is probably not the game for you.

Player Information
1. Player Name or Nickname
2. Player OOC journal
3. Player email contact
4. Player AIM contact (not required, but makes it easier to reach you)
5. Player age (must be 16 or over)
6. Other Lab Arc games you have played in:

Character Information
1. Character name
2. Character race
3. Character age
4. Character occupation
5. Character affiliation (if any) (fifth column? resistance? etc)
6. Physical description: (Please note that we do not care who you use to portray your character - pictures of a celeb, model, musican, your neighbor Joe, hand drawn or web-created graphics, cartoon-type-dolls, whatever you feel best represents your character's appearance is okay by us. Though do take a look around to see what other players are using to avoid duplicates)
7. Character background/history (What they did before they got to where they are now)
8. Character abilities (What are some things your character can do well?)
9. Character flaws (What are some things your character is not good at?)
10. Character's journal (optional, but preferred)

Writing Samples
Please provide a brief sample of your writing for this character in the form of:
1. A brief third person scene (one paragraph or more)
2. A short first-person journal style entry (one paragraph or more)

Feeling lazy? Email the mod with your AIM SN to arrange a personal interview over AIM to bypass the application process. We're down with that.

Note: If you have played in prior Lab Arc games and wish to bypass the application, please contact me over AIM to pitch your character concept. Once you've played with us and we know you can play well, we're mellow about things - we hate applications too. Doesn't everybody?

If you already play a character in the game and want to bring in a second, you can also make contact to bypass the application.

Rules

Every revolution was first a thought in one man's mind
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson

General Rules:
1. You must be at least 16 years old and demonstrate a basic maturity to play.

2. Read all the rules on this page. Be sure this is a place you'd like to play before applying.

3. Fill out the application.

4. You must join both the RP community and the OOC community once you are accepted. Please keep your OOC commentary to the OOC community (for obvious reasons).

5. Be kind to your fellow players - if you have a dispute, bring it to the moderator.

6. If you have any questions about these rules or the application, feel free to contact the mod.

Character Rules:
1. Please apply with only ONE character. If you wish to play multiple characters and can keep up with them, you are more than welcome to do so. But first, your initial character concept must be approved.

2. Characters can be your own creation (preferred) or a canon from whatever fandom you choose. Fandom characters should be adapted accordingly to the world and there must be a plausible reason for them to exist here.

3. Your character doesn't have to be mister-goody-two-shoes, but no villains, please. Your character may have selfish reasons for wanting to ensure the survival of humanity (for example: 'It's good for business' coming from a merchant, or 'because then I wouldn't have anyone to eat, damnit' coming from a disgruntled vampire) - but for the most part, s/he must work with the good-guy team. Villains, bad guys, etc. will be run by the mods.

4. Your character must have a good balance of abilities and flaws. No 'completely helpless damsel in distress' or 'super-good-at-everything guy' characters will be accepted.

5. You can either keep a separate character journal (preferred) or use an icon in your own journal to represent your character when you post.

RP Rules:
1. Do not harm, kill, maim, use, or abuse someone else's character without prior permission of that character's player.

2. You, the players, are in control of the direction this game takes. So how you organize as a group, what you try to do to stop the Guardians, what direction the action takes, is primarily up to YOU. Yes, you can try to do anything that your character would reasonably be able to do - but remember, not every action will succeed and there are often in-game consequences for successes and failures. If there's something you're not sure your characters would be able to do, just message the mod and talk it over. I don't bite.

3. There are no set 'ships' or 'preferred character sexuality'. Characters can be straight, gay, bi, monogamous, poly, transgender, asexual, whatever. We do not, however, support male pregnancy or other physical impossibilities.

4. Angst for angst's sake is bad. Angst that fits in with the story or your character's personal issues is fine, but not required by any means. Be realistic with the problems you cause your character. Don't have him be sodomized by wolverines once weekly, for example. That's just right out.

Posting Rules:

1. Two types of posts will be made in this game:

Action Posts
These posts will take place in the community, in third person. These posts allow for RP in the comments between characters. If you have a post that is only open to a specific group of characters, please indicated it in your post header - otherwise it is considered open to anyone who wants to reply to it.

Journal Posts
These optional posts will be first person journal style entries that are posted to your character's personal journal. Because each character is a friend of the community, these will be visible by checking the Friends page. Characters' journal entries can be used to describe what the character is feeling about current events, provide backstory in the form of 'flashbacks' or reflecting on the past, detailing small things that the character has been up to that don't warrant action posts, etc. These posts are a great opportunity for character development. We suggest our other community charloft and some of the prompts there as excellent journaling material.

2. Please try to post fairly frequently so the game does not lag and die. I'm not going to do activity checks or anything 'cause I'm mellow - but just be reasonably active whenever you can be.

3. Put the following header in the body of your posts to the community:

Who: (Who is involved - for example , Hans open to anyone)
Where: (where this takes place - for example, Hans's apartment)
When: (an approximate date and time of day )
What: ( a summary of what the post is about, optional)
Warnings: (if anything is graphic behind an LJ-cut, optional)

4. Post and reply where you want to, when you want to, as long as it makes logical IC sense. Similarly, there is no set storyline you must follow. The mods will provide the world background and advance the plot along here and there (and provide feedback on how player actions affect the area), but for the most part, it is player actions and relations that will determine the story. Post post post. It's fun and oh-so-good for you.

Getting Started - what you need to know

We must all hang together
or assuredly we will hang separately.
-- Benjamin Franklin

Story
Our Last Resort is ultimately a story of survival - the tale of a revolution in a time of trouble. The character you play in this game has the power to affect change in this dynamic world - the plots will develop according to the actions (or inactions) of your characters.

Understanding your world will ultimately help ensure your survival. Please read over the information very carefully. If you have any questions about the world, or the game in general, please feel free to contact the mods and ask.

Setting
The current action takes place in New York City, in the year 2012. New York is an occupied city - under control of the Guardians. Humanity is at a distinct disadvantage - but they are banding together to try and trip the odds. Guardian Centers throughout the city act as office buildings (and troop deployment) for these supernatural oppressors. The news media is very much under the new regime's control, though there may well be certain underground publications that a lucky individual could find. Gangs, bands of rebels, or just small groups trying to survive are common on the streets and in the sewers and subway tunnels underground. Most are fiercely territorial, and they have no central leadership as yet to organize a true revolution. Perhaps the time has come.

People
Guardians are supernatural beings in control of the majority of the world. The majority of the populace is pretty clueless about the true nature of these creatures. They're certainly human in appearance, though there are some key differences. They are paler, with cold (almost clammy) skin and bright eyes. Conspiracy theorists call them either 'aliens' or 'demons'. The truth is known only by a select few... and the Guardians themselves. Guardian troops wear black uniforms of a lightweight but strong material.

Fifth Column - This subversive group disagrees with the Guardian leadership's policies, and seeks to assist the human resistance where possible in order to bring about the administration's downfall. Little is known about their numbers or organization, other than the nickname of their leader - M5.

M5 is the codename of the Guardian Fifth Column leader. Not much is known about his true identity.

Friends of the Guardians - often shortened to just The Friends, is a human youth corps founded by the Guardians. The uniform of a Friend of the Guardians is a dull gray with black stripes that indicate one's rank in the core. Some Friends go on to become a part of Guardian military units after reaching the age of 18. Thought of by some as a prestigious organization, but some humans look down on the Friends as collaborators, or government narcs. They publish a monthly magazine called The Visitor, which is little more than pro-Guardian propaganda.

Resistance groups crop up all over the city. Some are more successful than others. Each group is as varied in methods of organization as the individuals themselves, but they all have one common goal - thwart the Guardians wherever possible. They'd like to see an end to Guardian rule and have humanity return to power.

The Immortal is Hans Varner, a former Nazi who is cursed to immortality as a result of his war crimes. He is bringing his friends into the city in an attempt to tip the scales and find his own absolution in the process.

Character Choices
The great majority of characters will be humans, though it is certainly acceptable to play a human with special abilities such as a witch or a psychic. Keep in mind that these abilities are rare - so if we start to see too many of a particular type of special ability in the game, we may limit these characters in the future. It is also quite possible to play a lycantrhope (ie: werewolf), vampire, demon, totem warrior, etc. - if you bear in mind that this character must have a reason for being on the side of humanity. Yes, all characters must be 'good guys'. They can have their own selfish reasons for wishing humanity success (ie: don't want to be a part of the Guardians, don't want the food source taken away) and helping out the cause, but no villains will be accepted. Guardians who are members of the Fifth Column are available for play.

Characters can be leaders or members of a small resistance group, underground newspaper printers, anarchists with a fanatical spin to the cause, former Friends of the Guardians who've seen the light - use your imagination and the possibilities are endless. It's a big city, and there's a lot of people who are trying a lot of different things to make a difference.

Occupation-wise, you have a similar wide spectrum. Maybe your character was attending medical school before the collapse of the educational system, and now he's running a traveling clinic. Or maybe he was a drifter who never found his niche in life, until he picked up a gun for his species. This game is wide open to your creativity - the more detail you want to put into your character's background, the better.

You may play an original character of your own creation, or a character from anywhere that you have adapted to fit the world. If you choose to play a fandom character, please adjust them according to the circumstances of this world and have a valid reason for them to be here - you can indicate what this is on your application.
