23. Fight Club, Thirty Seconds to Mars (Jared Leto), Elementary

I've got a small graphics dump for you today - icons that have been sitting on my hard drive since last month (er, the beginning of last month), waiting for me to post them. These are for the mystery bag challenge at theiconquest and let's just say, the bag I got was completely out of my comfort zone. I've still got mixed feelings about some of them, but for the most part I was pleasantly surprised with how these turned out. :)

22. ASOIAF Fanmixes!

More icons are coming soon, I swear! :) This batch has been coming along slowly. So, in the meantime, I'll share something that I've also posted over at valyrian_forged, the fanworks community for the westerosorting communities (House Tully represent!).

We recently (okay, last month) finished the once-a-game contest spree called the Tourney of the Hand. As a moderator, I can't enter any of the contests, and seeing everyone's wonderful fanmixes during one of my contests made me want to make my own using the same idea! And then this happened.

(As a note for the show-viewers only: this is spoilery for Sansa's plotline. Enter if you dare!)

Notes cont'd: I opted to go (almost) entirely instrumental for both mixes, and if you'll notice, it's the exact same artists for both mixes. I had this brilliant idea that Sansa would have gone through my collection of instrumental music and then later on would go through as second time as Alayne, and pick the same artists but songs that were more meloncholy and much less optimistic. And then I realized that those two Vienna Teng songs were perfect, throwing my beautiful instrumental-only plan out the window, but I couldn't help but put them in anyway, lol.

Alas, most of my music comes in the form of .mp4s which, to my understanding, can't actually be shared because I purchased them through iTunes. Instead, I've posted links to the songs on youtube, plus put together the whole playlist for both mixes so you can listen to them that way. Sorry! :(

So, long time no post! Life happened, and by the time I had time to make icons again, the muse was gone. However, I've started to pine for Photoshop again, and so these icons are my attempt to get back into practice (somewhat). Since picking screencaps is probably my least favourite part of making icons, I started with something easy: the screencap challenge at theiconquest (Chapter 5, Sidequest 1). As such, I'm not sure which fandoms most of these come from... sorry!

Also, almost everything is rogue - simple all the way!

So, I really (really) struggled with this batch. Apparently, the only way that I can do palette challenges is if I make monochromatic icons. XD I also forgot how much of a pain this movie could be to colour, particularly when you're not sticking to a blue/purple sort of theme, and so... this is what I ended up with. However good or bad these are, though, I figured that I spent way too much time trying to make them work, and even if they aren't to my taste, perhaps they are to someone else's. :)

Tips and Tricks for Black and White Icons

Requested by kirtash_girl at Ask the Maker 3.0 (my thread). Hopefully this is what you were looking for! :)

This is a quick guide on how I do black and white icons. I talk a little bit about cap selection (the whys and hows of the caps I pick), my general process for black and white icons, what textures I tend towards when I'm doing a b&w icon, and some random tips and tricks/notes. This is by no means a complete guide, and there's definitely not a 'right' way to do B&W icons (this is just how I happen to think about it).

Cap selection.

When it comes to picking screencaps for b&w icons, I tend towards two different types of screencaps: simple screencaps, or screencaps where I can remove the background so that my subject won't get lost in it.

Simple caps.

B&W icons work best when it is easy to find and focus on the subject of the icon; without colour to pull the subject out from the background, subjects can get lost if the icon is too busy or crowded. Thus, simple caps work best. What constitutes a simple cap?

I'd consider all three of these "simple" caps because the camera has either closely cropped the subject for me, the subject is positioned so that a close crop would be good, or the background of the screencap is relatively plain (and therefore won't distract from the subject).

Background removal.

The other alternative, if you have a cap you think would make a spectacular B&W icon but for that busy background, is to cut your subject away from the background. Some good tutorials to look at for this can be found at good_tutorial (under this tag). The plus side of removing the background for an icon that you know will be b&w is that blending the new background and your subject together is easier, because your colours don't have to match! :)

Shadows.

I'm a sucker for a lot of contrast in B&W icons. While more matte tones work for some icons, I still tend towards really dark blacks and light whites for my icons because I like the aesthetic. While the shadows can be achieved through a combination of curves and/or levels, soft light layers, and brightness/contrast adjustment layers, I've found that if you start with a cap that already has the shadows there, the icon will come out much better. For instance:

General Process.

Cropping.

The first thing I do when I start iconning (b&w or colour) is crop my image, because it's probably my least favourite part and I don't want to spend a ton of time colouring an icon only to find that there isn't a crop that I like. Usually, I just paste my image onto a 100x100 canvas and free transform until I'm happy with its placement (when I worked in PSP, I just used the crop tool, but I found it easier to work with than PS's crop tool).

For b&w, the main thing I've found to keep in mind is make sure the focus stays on your subject. Close crops where there are lots of shadows, centered negative space crops, etc. Without colour, it's easy to lose your subject if your background or textures are busy.

"Colouring."

I pretty much have two kinds of black and white icons: the ones where I sit down and plan for them to be b&w, and the ones where they end up b&w after being coloured normally. For each 'type' of colouring I'll give an example, to show how the process works.

For icons that I know are going to be b&w, the first thing I do is put down a black and white gradient map (found here in CS5), followed either by two curves layers or several screen/soft light duplicates of the base, depending on what looks better. If I use curves, I use the first layer to brighten the icon up and the second to introduce contrast back into the icon (usually, this second curve is 'S' shaped). From there, everything I do is strictly to increase the brightness and/or contrast as apporpriate - which I do using curves, levels, and occassionally a brightness/contrast layer. This obviously differs depending on the image.

As an example, for a simple icon that I intended to be black and white, this was my process:

The other b&w icons I do are as often happy accidents as attempts to make an icon specifically b&w, lol. Either the icon looks as good or better in b&w as it does in colour, or my attempts at colouring an image are either overwhelming the subject or just plain not good, and so they end up b&w instead. For instance, these icons are all b&w, but had colour versions already:

My process for getting these b&w isn't so different from my regular process. Once I've finished colouring the image, sometimes I'll check it with a b&w gradient. If I like what I see, I might save the colour version and then make the b&w alt. by tweaking the contrast and/or textures as necessary. For instance:

Tools.

These are approximations of the settings that I tend to use when making an image b&w. Obviously, it depends on the icon, and in all cases my main goal is really just to increase the brightness and contrast of the image. Usually, I'll use these tools in combination, not individually.

I use lots of soft light layers, with screen layers underneath to keep things bright. I find the contrast gets too high if the layer is set to hard light, but if I use multiple soft light layers at various opacities, I've got better control over how much contrast an image will end up with. Soft light darkens the shadows beautifully.

Textures.

Depending on your icon, textures might make all the difference in making your icon look like a finished product. These are some textures that I find myself coming back to again and again for my b&w icons, and what blend mode I usually use them on. Essentially, the trick is to make sure the texture complements the subject, not overwhelms it, because otherwise your subject might just fade into the background or get lost in the texture.

Below I've given some examples of different types of textures that I like to use, and how they look on an icon. I should note, though, that I'm big on using a whole ton of textures for colouring and lighting, so I've only listed the most obvious texture, not necessarily all of the textures on that particular icon.

Grunge/Splatter/etc..

"Complex" B&W. (aka duplication)

Pretty much throughout this entire guide, I've been emphasising simple composition to make sure that the subject doesn't get lost in b&w. Obviously, I'm far from an expert, and all of this is pretty much just what I've concluded from my own experiments. And, as such, there are always exceptions to things that I've said. For instance, sometimes b&w can work with complex icons better than colour would:

In both of these cases, I've just duplicated the same base image - but, if these icons were colour, the colours would completely overwhelm the icon. The original icons are the black and white ones.

Light blobs.

So, these aren't really textures or gradients, which is why I'm not mentioning these up a little bit higher. Lighting is really important in a black and white icon because it is really what makes an icon stand out. Usually, if I'm not happy with how the lighting in an icon looks, I'll create a new layer, set it to soft light, and paint over various areas with a soft brush to brighten or darken those spots (light gray to brighten, dark gray to darken).

Stylistically, this is a pretty simple batch, and I'm working on a new monitor, so hopefully these look alright to everyone else, too! The Tangled icons are also my first foray into iconing something animated (I think I did a couple of How to Train Your Dragon icons last year and that sums up my attempts at an animated subject), but the movie was too adorable to resist!

Since my current obsession is Grimm (and I haven't yet seen enough of S2 of GOT to make a full batch of icons), I decided to choose that, and I focused specifically on the leading ladies of the show. As per usual, there are a bunch of alternates, but I've grouped everything together within the post.

14. Grimm, Once Upon a Time, Game of Thrones

My field exam is coming up so, naturally, all I really want to do is anything but study. So, I used iconning as part of my reward system, and these are the results! I normally don't think much about batches before hand unless they're for an icontest, but in this case I wanted to play off of a rainbow theme, so this batch is on the whole, pretty monochromatic (since I thought that I would give that style a shot). Also, because I actually somewhat planned this post beforehand, the subjects are somewhat out of order, which just goes to show that I didn't plan ahead as well as I'd hoped. ;)

It's pretty small, but hopefully I'll have the time and inspiration to get another batch done before another month and a half has gone by. :)

13. TSCC, Multifandom

Holy crap, it's a post! School is eating up a great deal of my time currently (I'm in the last semester of a graduate degree) and that, combined with Skyrim and the fact that I'm probably the slowest icon-maker EVER means that posts will probably be pretty infrequent over the next few months until things stop eating up so much of my "free" time.

However, I do come bearing a pretty large post today! These were done for the Work At Your Own Pace challenge at landofart, and I've included a pretty big chunk of my alternates/variations/rejects. In addition to icons, there are two larger tumblr-style graphics (I don't have a tumblr and have come to the conclusion that larger canvases are just not for me) and a massive Daenerys Targaryen picspam. Tutorials #4 River Tam and #5 Boomer/8

Part two of the Ask the Maker tutorials! These were also requested by tor_na_do. :)

As with the previous post, this post is both text and image heavy!

I start off with this cap (cap, credited to Leave Me the White) of River Tam from Serenity and use the Free Transform tool to shrink it down and position it to my liking. Having coloured this particular scene before, I know that the caps are all going to be incredibly blue, but take well to brightening without getting too pixelly (unlike some of the scenes from, say, Firefly, which are a pain to work with because they don't brighten up well).

In order to add more brightness to the image, I do my basic prep steps - I duplicate the base twice. The first copy I set to screen (100%) to brighten the image and the second to soft light (100%) to darken the shadows and increase the image's contrast.

At this point, I'm just sort of fiddling around with different textures to change the lighting and colouring, and eventually I stumble across this one by spooky_window, which I set to hard light (100%) and place below my top two layers (just above my base) - at soft light it wasn't as visible as I wanted it. While I liked the shadows along the top of the image, they were lower than I wanted them to be, so I used the free transform tool and stretched the texture a little vertically, and then erased where it gets incredibly bright at the very bottom of the icon (just below River's hair). (Texture after manipulation.)

This icon was very much the result of lots of fiddling and just playing around with photoshop (the theme for this icon was supposed to be 'distinctive,' but as I feel like my style - whatever it is - is still pretty nebulous, I wasn't quite sure how to make a 'distinctive' icon. So I picked an image that I liked and just started playing with it like I normally do, which I figured was as good a way to make it distinctive as any ;) ). Since this was all fiddling around, this step seems pretty counter-intuitive given the final product - I added a curves layer, and in that added a bunch of yellow, and a little green and red, exaggerating the texture's effect and returning some of the contrast that has been flattened out by the texture.

It was at this point that I decided it was time to counteract all of that green. So, I created another curves layer - this time, the only thing I changed was the green channel, where I pulled the curve way down into the magenta side of the box.

I ended up wanting to fiddle with the greens a little more, and when the curves weren't doing what I wanted them to I switched tools - this time to levels. I had a little more success there: only changing the green channel, I increased the amount of magenta in the shadows, and then increased the amount of green in the midtones so that the image wasn't overwhelmingly purple.

At this point, I also put a vibrance layer in there (vibrance +21), but frankly, there isn't much of a difference, so that step could definitely be skipped.

At this point, I decided that it was time to play with textures! I used the above texture by soaked because I liked the purples and having used it on other icons before, I knew that it would give me the effect that I was looking for (shadows where I wanted them, purple tones overall). I pasted it on top of everything and set it to soft light (100%).

I wanted to change the lighting a little bit further, so I went back to my favourite texture by spooky_window and pasted it in, setting it to soft light (100%). After moving it around between the layers a bit, I settled on placing it between the first and second curves layer, so that it showed through (but wasn't as overwhelming). I also ended up taking my smudge tool and smudging the light part of the texture from left to right and downwards across the icon, to distribute the light in a way I was happy with. I also erased the dark portion in the bottom left. The texture, after all my manipulation, looked like this.

I really wanted the focus of the icon to be in the direction that River was looking, so I decided to use my textures to try and block out the right side of the image and hopefully direct the viewer's eye to the left side of the icon. After fiddling with a variety of textures, I settled on this texture, also by soaked, and rotated it 90 degrees clockwise with the free transform tool. It changed the lighting over River's face to something I was happy with, and I really liked the effect that the texture had in the top right of the icon - it brought out the blue and purple really nicely. It is set at soft light (100%).

However, I was still not satisfied! I felt that the way that the texture just sort of came out of River's shoulder and cut off the back of her head looked funny, but I wasn't satisfied with my attempts to mask out certain areas, and the texture (while a nice addition) didn't draw the attention towards the left of the icon like I'd originally intended. So, I went texture hunting again, and came up with this one (another soaked texture). I liked the foggy look of the texture, and the blues fit well with the image (so I wouldn't have to try and change the texture's colour). I placed it below the top texture, but above everything else (because when it was above everything it was too overwhelming), at screen (100%).

The previous step was where I stopped for the colour version of the icon, and then to make it black and white I simply used a gradient map (a black to white gradient set at normal, 100%). If you use a program that doesn't have gradient maps, simply grayscaling a copy-merged version of the icon should achieve the same effect.

I started with this screencap of 8/Boomer from the first season of Battlestar Galactica - I really liked the negative space of the image and, again, this was one for a icontest, so there was a theme that I was keeping in mind (in this case, the theme was 'split' - so I chose to duplicate 8, and I chose her in particular because her character is split in the series between Boomer and Athena). Since I knew I would be duplicating her to go with my interpretation of the theme, I chose a cap with a lot of negative space, but where she would also (hopefully) be distinctive if I shrunk her down.

Which is exactly what I did! I took the screencap and, using the free transform tool, shrunk it down so that it was roughly the width of the icon. Obviously, this left quite a bit of negative space at the top, but that's okay! In order to fill in the rest of the space, I did a couple of things:

1. Duplicated the base and moved it upwards. Since it's all up and down straight lines, I can get away with this because what's above Boomer's head should look the same the higher the camera pans anyway.
2. Smudged the background above Boomer somewhat to blend things together (just with the basic smudge tool, on its softest setting and at a small size, no more than 5 - 10 px in diameter).

Obviously, YMMV depending on your image and what the background looks like, but these two concepts are generally how I extend the background of any image (mostly the smudge tool). Occasionally, I will also flood fill a new layer with one of the dominant background colours and use my brush to fade the original image into the solid background, but that wasn't something that I ended up doing here.

At this point, I duplicated my base image and mirrored it (Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal) and moved it up and around until I was satisfied with the placement. At that point, I tried smudging the image down to blend it into the rest of the icon, but I wasn't satisfied with the effect so I took a different approach. I created a layer mask (Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All) and, using a larger brush (40 - 50 px) set at a very low hardness, I masked out the areas around Boomer until I was happy with how they looked. (The layer mask ended up looking like this.) There is no science to this... I just fiddled until I was satisfied!

Or, until I was mostly satisfied, because I didn't like how she seemed to be cut off at the torso. So, I went back to my base + first duplicated image (this one) and copy-merged it, and then pasted it on top. Then, I moved that around until the cream portions mostly covered the place where she has been cut off and erased the darker colours. Then, using a combination of the smudge tool and my soft eraser brush, I smudged the colours together so they weren't as obviously from the background and then faded the edges into the rest of the icon so everything blended together nicely. This was a whole ton of trial and error!

At this point, though, my basic composition is complete and it's time for textures and colouring.

I started with this texture by soaked, which I chose because it was slightly grungy/scratchy and I wanted to give the image that sort of texture. I was just beginning to experiment with different ways to use textures at this point, so I went out of my comfort zone and set the texture to hard light (100%), and was pleasantly surprised with the results. I erased the areas that covered Boomer, since they overwhelmed her, but left the texture alone another than that.

Next, I wanted to get some of the gold/brown tones back, ~~so I went back to my textures folder. Unfortunately, I cannot find, for the life of me, the original texture that I used - after my manipulation, it looks like the above.~~ and, I have now realized, ended up duplicating the blue texture that I used above and inverting it. The opposite of blue on the colour spectrum is yellow, so that is where the yellow/gold tones come from. So, I used this newly created brown-gold grungy texture and erased the bits over Boomer in order to darken the background and colour the image a bit (it is set to hard light, 100%). (If I find the texture, or if someone recognizes it, I'll edit this post accordingly! I have the sneaking suspicion that it is actually a heavily edited version of the blue texture I used the step before, and if that's the case I'll edit this post to tell you what I did to the texture.)

I take this texture by soaked and paste it on top, setting it to soft light, 100%. I wanted to play with the lighting of the image a little more, as well as further add to the yellow/gold colour of the image, and this texture did both of those. While I liked how it darkened the top right corner of the image, I felt like the light cut across the picture too abruptly, so I used the gaussian blur filter in order to really soften the light (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur with a radius of between 4.5 and 5 pixels).

At this point, I was happy with how the colouring looked, but the image was really under-contrasted. To correct that, I created a new curves layer with two points on the RGB curve - one pulling down in the shadows, and one in the highlights brightening those (since contrast is greater when the shadows are darker and the highlights are brighter).

Since I felt like the duplicate image in the top left wasn't quite blending in the way that I wanted to, I went back through my textures folder and eventually settled on this one by soaked (seriously, I use these textures a lot!). This particular one had a sort of jagged dark gray section which I knew, when set to soft light, would have the effect on the lighting that I wanted (it'd make the right areas of the icon look a little darker). Coincidentally, the splatter lined up relatively well with where I'd blended Boomer into the rest of the image when I flipped the texture vertically, but if it hadn't, the free transform tool (or re-positioning my duplicate image) could have done the trick, too. I set this texture to soft light, 100%. Since it darkened the duplicate image's face too much, I used a soft eraser brush and erased just over her face, so that it would stand out a little more.

Lastly, to grayscale the image! I used a gradient map (black to white) to make the image black and white.

Tutorials #1 Sansa, #2 Daenerys, and #3 Daenerys (again)

This is post #1 of 2 of tutorials for Ask the Maker at icon_talk. tor_na_do requested tutorials for five icons (sorry it took me so long to get them up!), and so here are the tutorials for the Game of Thrones icons.

This post is long and graphics heavy. I've put in LJ-cuts at the start of each tutorial, but there are about a dozen images per tutorial and I talk a lot, so it'll still add up.

The first two tutorials are written in Photoshop CS5; the third tutorial is written in PSPX2, but the theory works just as well in PS. (When I was testing it out, I discovered that PS plots the numbers on their curves a little differently, which obviously change the results of the icon. However, since I include screencaps of the curves layer, if you look at how the curve is shaped and recreate that rather than plugging in numbers, you should still get the same, or similar, results.)

I started off with this image (cap) of Sansa from Game of Thrones (cap by enchantedfleur! I chose this one because I really liked the way that she was half-turned towards the camera, and since I knew that I wanted to make a negative space icon I hoped that this pose would lend itself well to an icon (more than others in the same scene where she was facing the camera more straight-on).

At its original size, I masked out the background around Sansa (deleting or masking large chunks with the selection tool). I don't have a copy of this step at full size, unfortunately. I've never been particularly good at using the lasso tool, so when I crop things out from the background I tend to just use a mask and a brush and go over the details a lot. Looking at the .psd of this icon, I seem to have actually erased (rather than masked) a good chunk of the background but normally I wouldn't recommend doing that because if you screw up, you're in trouble. Some good tutorials for cutting out backgrounds are this one, this one, and this one. If you're looking for more resources, good_tutorial has a tag which covers removing backgrounds. :)

Once most of the background has been cut out, I copy Sansa over to my 100x100 canvas and use the free transform tool to shrink her down to the size I want her, and finish masking out the areas that I missed that are still obvious at such a small size. For the background, I chose to zoom in and used the colour picker tool to pull out #6b3f34, which I got from the shadows of her dress.

Next up is my basic prep - I copy-merge the icon so far and paste it twice. The first layer I set to screen (100%) and the second to soft light (100%) to brighten the icon up and to give it more contrast.

Now for the fun part! This was pretty much all achieved through experimentation. I really liked the pinks that were going on in the icon, so the first thing I did was find a texture that had the colours I liked in it to give the background some interest. I eventally chose this texture by happy_harper13 at mosaically. While originally I had it as the top layer, set at hard light (100%), I pulled it down below both the soft light and the screen layer so that Sansa would stand out more. Using hard light still gives it a great amount of texture, but doesn't darken or brighten the image like multiply or screen would, and soft light didn't give the image quite what I was looking for.

Okay, so this is where things got a little messy (and it takes a series of steps). I still felt that the background was a little plain for me, so I went digging through my textures again and came up with another texture (cap) by mosaically. I pasted it below the previous texture and set it to screen (100%), but then I manipulated it further, which is my next step.

I liked the light splotches, but I felt that they were too overwhelming, so I used the motion blur filter (Filter > Blur > Motion Blur) set at around -55 degrees/27 pixels to give the texture the feeling that it was moving from the bottom right corner to the top left corner (or... the top left corner to the bottom right, depending on which way you look at it, I guess). I then erased the areas that covered Sansa's face with a big, soft round brush because I didn't like the way that they washed her features out.

At this point, I find that the left side of the icon is too dark in comparison to the right (which is where most of that light texture ended up), so I go digging through my textures folder again and come up with a texture by erzsebet. I set that on soft light (100%) below my top two Sansa layers but above everything else I've done so far and set it to soft light. However, I'm finding that the purple doesn't really go with what I'm looking for, so I grayscale the texture (Image > Adjustments > Black & White) and again, with a big soft brush, erase the areas covering Sansa since again, she's too washed out.

Lastly, I duplicate one of my Sansa bases and drag it to right below my top two Sansa layers. I feel like her face is too dark in comparison to the rest of the icon, still, so I set this new base to screen and erase everything but a strip up along her front, through her face, and above her head to the top of the icon (it's not an exact science, lol). My intention was essentially to brighten up her features, but in such a way that they wouldn't look unnaturally bright in comparison to her surroundings; by using a soft brush to erase most of her surroundings, the screen layer sort of fades into the rest of the icon, rather than abruptly cutting into it. The screen layer itself is too bright at 100%, so I lower the opacity until I'm satisfied that it meshes well (at around 40% opacity).

This is when I stopped playing with textures and tiny details (like the brightness of Sansa's face) and started looking at the overall colouring of the icon. The textures have done most of it for me at this point, but the image is pretty under-contrasted and could still use a little tweaking.

I add a new curves layer and leave the RBG channel alone. I was a little concerned at this point that the icon was going to be too red, so I switched tothe red channels and added two points (one in the shadows and one closer to the highlights end of the midtones), both of which I dragged down slightly into the cyans. I also add two points on the green channel: one in the shadows that tugs the shadows of the image up towards the greens, and a second in the lighter midtones that pulls it down into the magentas. Lastly, in the blue channel I again add two points: the first in the midtones, pulling them up into the blues and the second in the shadows, which I pull down into the yellows. I should emphasize that all of these changes are very slight - I tend not to make big changes when using curves because I find, for the most part, little ones are enough.

All of the numbers listed below are as if I'm reading the points from left to right.

I don't like how green the previous step has made the icon, so I create a new colour balance layer to correct the shadows (I leave the midtones and highlights alone). In the shadows I increase the amount of cyan, magenta, and blue in the image to counteract the green and to make the shadows appear darker and more dramatic.

Shadows: -26 | - 10 | +17

I like the shadows for the most part, but I want to lighten the bottom of the image a little and tie Sansa into the background a little better, so I add one more texture in order to do so! This time, it is a texture by soaked. I set this texture to screen (100%) and pretty much go crazy with the eraser in order to take away most of the brightness on the top left and into the bottom of the icon, as well as anything that has covered above Sansa's shoulders.

At this point, I'm just making a few final tweaks. I add a vibrance layer out of habit (+14 vibrance, I leave the saturation alone), but I could probably have left it out as it didn't make a huge difference in the case of this icon. I also want to increase the brightness and contrast of the image, so I add a new brightness/contrast layer (Brightness +15, contrast +5). I don't want to increase the contrast too much because the image is already pretty contrasted, but when you use the brightness/contrast layer to add brightness to an icon the icon often appears a little washed out, so I added the contrast in order to counteract that effect.

I also, at this point, copy-merged everything and pasted it as a new layer at the very top (which I tend to do with every icon out of habit). I'm finding that the highlights on Sansa's face look a little pixelly, so I zoom in and use the blur tool to soften them a touch, but other than that I don't sharpen the icon or manipulate the image any further.

Since this tutorial was long and rambly (even for me!), here's a screencapture of my layers palette (click) so you can better see the order that the layers went in for this particular icon, as well as how much/where on the textures I erased. Pretty much, when it comes to this type of icon, you have to be willing to do a lot of experimenting (I went through dozens of textures, easily, each time before I picked the one that I ended up using) and okay with manipulating the textures a bit to fit what you are trying to achieve with your icon.

I start with my base image (here) of Daenerys and Viserys Targaryen, again by enchantedfleur. After fiddling around with the free transform tool I ended up with a crop that I liked and went with that.

Since the image is so washed out, the first thing I do is duplicate my base and set it to Soft Light (100%) to give the image more contrast.

Originally, when I was making this icon, I'm pretty sure that it was for a "blue" theme, so that was what directed my early colouring choices (obviously, with this version of the icon I decided against going blue, though I did also make a bluer version). Usually when it comes to colouring, I try and play up the strengths of the original screencap (unless I'm going in with an idea already forming in my head), because my results tend to be better than when I am trying to force a screencap into a colouring that it just doesn't lend itself to. So. That's partially where this yellowish colouring came from (Dany's scenes tend to be pretty yellowy).

These days I have been starting my icons with a curves layer in order to brighten the image up more and fix the colouring some. Here, I up the brightness, tweak the red midtones towards the cyans, tug the green shadows towards the magentas, and ever so slightly increase the blue in the image.

Since my goal at this point was still to make my image blue, I add a new colour balance layer in order to add more blues to the image (particularly the shadows). In the shadows, I increase the cyan, magenta (slightly) and blues in order to give the darker parts of the image a blue-purple tinge; I increase the red and yellows in the midtones slightly so that the image still maintains a sort-of natural colouring; and increase the blues in the highlights to give the image more of a blue tinge. I always work from shadows to highlights when I work with the colour balance tool.

Shadows: -17 | -5 | +27
Midtones: +6 | 0 | -20
Highlights: 0 | 0 | +12

This was the point when I split between the blueish colouring and the yellow colouring that ended up being the final colouring for this icon. I knew that I wanted a sort of goldy/yellowy image, so I created another curves layer. First, I pulled the blue curve down towards the yellow side of the spectrum (in the midtones), and then when I found that the image was still too dark for my tastes, I pulled the RGB curve up to brighten the image further. There are two points on the RGB curve.

Vibrance! I add a quick vibrance layer (Vibrance +43, Saturation unchanged) to brighten the colours up a little more. This step is entirely optional, and in retrospect, I don't see a huge difference.

Now for the finishing touches! I pulled out one of my most overused textures ever - this one (link) by spooky_window. It's my go-to texture for when I want to change the lighting of an icon and I don't feel like fiddling around with a paintbrush and light blobs. I paste it on the icon and set it to soft light (100%), but I don't like the purple-tones of the texture so I grayscale it (Image > Adjustments > Black and White) so that I keep the lights but lose the changes to my colouring.

Lastly, I copy-merged everything and pasted it as a new layer at the top. While this image doesn't need any sharpening, her skin is a little pixelly in places (her cheek, for instance), so I zoom in close and smooth over some of the rough spots with the blur tool. Like the vibrance layer, this doesn't really make a huge change, so depending on the quality of the screencap you start with, this could be skipped too.

This tutorial, unlike the other tutorials, is\ written for PSPX2 rather than Photoshop CS5. This past summer, my photoshopping laptop died, but since I still had a few challenge entries left to complete, I did them on a borrowed computer that had a copy of PSP. This tutorial should also work just fine in Photoshop, aside from the curves layer, as I mentioned above.

I started with a base of Dany from episode 10 of Game of Thrones (this might not be the exact screencap, but it is pretty darn close - this one is from enchantedfleur as well, but I don't recall where I got my original image over the summer), which I resized and rotated slightly until I was satisfied with how her face was framed by the icon. Since it was so dark, I duplicated it and set it to screen (100%) twice. To increase contrast, I then duplicated the base once more, dragged it to the top, and set it to soft light (100%).

Since the image is so red, I chose to add some more cyan to the image with a new colour balance layer and, as part of my fiddling, I ended up toying with the other layers in order to give the image a more blue/green tinge (except in the shadows, where I added more yellow and magenta rather than blue and green). This made the image a little more interesting, since at the start its pretty blah in terms of colour. (Make sure that preserve lumimance is checked when you create this colour balance layer!)

Next, the image needed some desperate brightening up and contrast, so I used a curves layer to achieve that! I created a slight 'S' curve on the RGB channel, and left the other channels alone. The first point is the point furthest left on the curve.

I thought that the colouring needed to be brighter and more saturated, so I fell back on one of my more used tools in PSP, the Channel Mixer. This tool is great when you're trying to adapt PS tutorials with selective colouring since it allows you to work with only one colour channel at a time (similar to selective colouring - the difference being that selective colouring gives you much, much more control). Here, I wanted to increase the amount of red, and ended up fiddling with all three channels in the process. I didn't change the contrast on any of the channels (and the numbers listed below are red %, green %, and blue %, respectively).

Since the image was still pretty dark, I used another curves layer to brighten it up. While I have two points, the point in the shadows really is to keep the shadows dark, since the top point would pull the entire curve upwards, otherwise.

Time to play with some lighting! I pull out my overused spooky_window texture and set it to soft light 100%, to give Dany a highlight across her face.

This is another texture by spooky_window, but here, I transformed it a bit. Because I felt that the dark strap of Dany's shirt was kind of distracting, I decided to use a texture to bring it into the background, and my experimentation led to this one. Using the pick tool (which looks like this) gives you the option to stretch and manipulate images, just like the free transform tool in PS does. When you have the pick tool selected, you see the bounding box of the layer that you have selected, plus a bar in the middle that you can use to rotate the image. Your canvas should look something like this. The pick tool is found in the same place as the Move tool in a little drop down in your tools palette. I stretched the texture until the orange only covered the strap and part of Dany's neck - the entire texture ended up looking like this, where the white is actually transparent. I set this to screen 100%.

I felt that I had lost the blue more than I would have liked, so I created a new raster layer and flood-filled it with a light shade of blue/cyan (#c0ffff). I positioned this layer between my two textures and set it to burn, and then reduced the opacity until I was satisfied (49%). This darkens the shadows of the image and gives them a blue tinge, kind of counteracting the overwhelming red/yellow of the icon.

Lastly, because the image was looking really grainy (a combination of a low-quality cap and the number of screen layers I had to use to brighten the image up), I copy-merged the entire image and pasted it at the top, and then I took the soften/blur tool and went over Dany's skin to get rid of the worst of the pixellation.

11. Fanmix - Mass Effect/Mass Effect 2

Okay, so, this is entirely unusual for me (I'm not much of a fanmixer). However, for Challenge #28 at landofart (Text and Nothing But Text), I decided to shove together my current video-gaming obsession with fanmix making and see where that got me. And I ended up with this? I suspect that it mostly fits with my head!canon of Shepard.

Music to Kill To - .rar
This mix was inspired by the fact that (now that I finally got around to playing it!), in one of the data files you find in the lair of the Shadow Broker you get a peek into Garrus' head via the Top Five Songs he has playing while he's in the field. And, I figured that if Garrus was listening to music while sniping people, why wouldn't Shepard? (It all made sense to me, I swear.) So, rather than being a mix with songs that I think describe Shepard, this a mix of what I think that Shepard might listen to... if he or she listened to the same music that I listen to.

The first four songs were just general Shepard. Songs 5 - 7 I thought were more in the style of Renegade Shepard and the last three I thought were more Paragon-y. I was looking for angry, loud, driving rhythms, and I had to work really hard not to duplicate bands (otherwise this would have been a mix that only consisted of Three Days Grace, Rise Against, and 30 Second to Mars).

As alluded to above the cut, I'm also pretty positive that my play through choices and head!canon have heavily influenced my music choices, here. My current game involves my first ever Renegade Shepard, and I'm playing through as man!Shep since I never do it (the voice actress for fem!Shep is better, in my opinion). The playthrough before that, Shepard was as Paragon as a person could get and female, so... the style and the gender both influenced my music choices, I'm sure.

10. Multifandom - Challenges

I apologize for the absolute randomness of this post! These are the icons that I managed to cobble together in time to submit for Challenge 11 at landofart, Iconically Based.

TBH I'm not sure how I feel about most of them, and I think it's largely because I'm not used to working off of other people's bases (or, that's my excuse!). I figured that there was no reason not to share them, though, especially since my graphic-making is probably going to be on hold for the next month or so (it's the end of semester, which means in grad student terms I'm swamped with readings and papers, and then I'll have three weeks of a photoshop-free computer over Christmas).

If you made any of the bases, please let me know so that I can credit you for them!

09. Game of Thrones

So, the theme this month at valyrian_forged, the fanfic/fan art/etc. community of westerosorting is the Lannisters, because they won last game. Since I've been thinking about trying to do a picspam, I decided that this was as good a reason as any. ;) Below the cut are three small picspams - Cersei, Jaime, and Tyrion - and some icons I made from the larger images. They're not spectacular, but I figured that there was no real reason not to post them, either. Also, there are two random Sansa icons tacked on at the end that I entered in the final challenge of round four over at turbo_rumble.
