(Previous readers of my NaNo journal will remember that usually I am around 15,000 words behind by week 3 and only manage to make it up through superhuman effort, so I suppose technically that is faster, but it's only one weekend, not sustained effort!)

I am not quite done with the actual story but I am definitely taking a break from it for a few days to regain some sanity. I'd post what I have, but I'm pretty certain it's not going to make any sense.

This year's attempt, assuming all goes according to plan, will be fantasy and involve mages and warriors and sudden unexpected soulbonding.

NaNoWriMo: When writing cliches is acceptable and fun!

TODO, pref. before Saturday:

Essential:
- Name the characters, including various minor characters
- Figure out the magic system
- Name the various cities and towns that will be significant to the story

Optional:
- Decide on the direction of the plot

As usual, story entries will be friendslocked so comment to be added.

This year's NaNoWriMo project will be a slightly trashy vampire (gay) romance. The catch is that the main vampire character is not allowed to angst, at all, ever.

It'll be posted friendslocked at first, but not filtered unless I get really really embarrassed (this is, alas, extremely likely).

Would people prefer me to post in complete sections or daily blocks?

*My brother was very thoughtlessly born on November 1st and thus I have been unable to write today.

So apparently I forgot to actually mention that I'm doing NaNoWriMo again this year. It's the restructure/rewrite of Kite I've been talking about.

Leave a comment here if you want to read - basic rules are, comment to encourage, not to correct, because I am not allowed to edit and if I do I will fail. Seriously.

Actually I'm probably going to fail anyway, but I'm ahead of wordcount for the moment! *waves little flags*

Too tired to actually post fic. Later.

Note: All NaNoWriMo writing will be under the NaNoWriMo 2006 tag, not the Kite tag. It'll be archived under Kite after it's de-NaNoed (ie. edited).

So I think I mentioned this briefly, but my basic approach to NaNo is essentially going to be using a whole heap of characters I have sitting in my head that don't get out much.

Heck, I might even write Saphrael into it, although he'd probably find it a bit weird. ("What do you mean Earth has collided with another world and suddenly magic exists and entire continents have disappeared? I thought at least the shape of the continents would be the same*..." *cue angstful musing about the world changing [*])

Basic setting will be around a university in aforementioned Merged World.

Question: Would a world where magic exists have such thing as SF/Fantasy novels (although I'd call it Speculative Fiction) and associated clubs? I'm leaning towards 'yes', mostly because of the state of historical fiction in our own world, the fact that magic hasn't always existed in Merged World, and failing that they still haven't explored space or anything so there's the perfect opening for Star Trek.

Besides, I like geeks.

Things to decide: Would they have reached the moon?

They have things equated to modern technology, powered by magic in some way. Technomancers deal with this. (The merging occurred around the same time as the Industrial Revolution, and once they got over the shock of things and the language barrier etc. etc. things sort of settled down and they developed technology together. [**]

Really I think this is just my way of getting cars and computers and so on into a world without, you know, destroying the planet.

* He is, of course, wrong about this, but he hasn't lived that long. [^]

** I have a lot of faith in my fictional humanity. [^]

Welcome.

So, this is where I'll be posting chapters of my NaNoWriMo story. Entries will be locked due to copyright/shyness issues. If you want to read, just Friend the journal and I promise I'll return the favour.

All names are subject to change.

The universe: Sometime in the near future (etc, etc), where psi-powers have just become widely accepted as being real. There is currently no registratoin required for psi-users, although some people want this to change. Think X-men without as much prejudice, plus I'm not trying to say that psi-users are the new humanity.

The characters: The narrator is currently called Christopher. He works for a government department something like the FBI, only they get passed all the psi-related cases, plus a few unsolvable ones, just in case they can do better with it. He's the one that usually gets the unsolvable cases, since his Special Power (TM) is psychometry - he touches things, he sees things related to their past. If he concentrates he can trace back from a specific time. He's very good at what he does, but most of the other psi-users think the power is useless because it's not even defensive, let alone offensive. When he touches living things what he sees is a bit different - he can't read their pasts conciously, but when he has something on his mind he often sees bits of the past in his dreams. (This is a convenient plot device to be able to show characters' backstory without really dropping the first person POV and without having to have them talk about it.)

Christopher's partner (as in, work partner) is a teleporter. He's smart, but a little lacking on common sense. He can teleport objects places, and also people (although he tends to play down that aspect of his power). I need a name for him.

Jonathan Kite runs a small investigative agency with two other people. Kite is one of those cool, calm, collected types who has a lot of power but tends not to show it until he needs to. (His Special Power (TM) is psi-blasts, like in... say, Street Fighter. He also has a bit of telekinesis. He insists on calling Christopher "Kit" for reasons of his own. Kite has a bad habit of getting messed up in cases a certain government department would rather handle on its own.

The plot: The three of them end up working together when their current assignments happen to coincide. What should have been a simple investigation turns up evidence of conspiracy, organised crime and lots of death. Being somewhat lacking in common sense, our heroes decide to get to the bottom of it. Of course, getting involved with organised crime is never a good idea, and once they attract the attention of the men in charge things are going to get messy...
