William Hennessy, Jr.

Courtroom Sketch Artist, SCOTUS (in memoriam)

(In Memoriam) William Hennessy Jr. exemplified the intersection of artistry and legal journalism through his distinguished 40-year career as America's preeminent courtroom sketch artist, capturing historic moments where cameras could not venture. A classically trained fine artist with a degree from Rhode Island School of Design, he answered a call for courtroom sketching while still in school to support his family and quickly became captivated by the work's tight deadlines and dramatic intensity. His evocative sketches provided the public with unique windows into courtroom dynamics, serving as the only visual record of proceedings in venues where photography remained prohibited. From the Supreme Court's Bush v. Gore arguments in 2000 to Chase Strangio's historic transgender rights presentation, Trump's impeachment trials, Hunter Biden's federal gun charges, and countless landmark cases, Hennessy's artwork allowed millions of Americans to witness history unfolding behind closed courtroom doors. Working independently while selling sketches to CNN, NBC, Fox, and other major news organizations, he became a fixture at courthouses nationwide, recognized for his colorful ties and friendly presence that earned acknowledgment from judges and respect from the press corps. Hennessy passed away December 9, 2024, on his 67th birthday, survived by his wife Arezou, seven children, and thirteen grandchildren.
