FUR recently just held their debut oneman, after which they had several big announcements.

The first is to welcome drummer FLAN to the group.

Second, the band will hold their first oneman, LIPS, in August. The event will take place on August 27th at Ikebukuro Edge. Additionally, their first sponsored event (booked as "first independent event") MULTIPLE ROOMS will be held on June 22nd at Ebisu (恵比寿) Liquidroom, featuring performances from MAMA., KAKUMAY, ORSEAS, the Gallo (ギャロ), Oideyo! Yureiz (おいでよ!幽霊ズ), and Mukade (蜈蚣).

Lastly, the band announced that they will be releasing their first single this coming summer. Now, while they have already released a single and already held a oneman performance, it seems like they are considering the joining of FLAN to denote a new era for the band.

We do not have any further details about the single yet, other than it will be called "GLOSS". Keep an eye out for more details in the future!

On May 25th, the pioneering Visual Kei band AURA officially confirmed the addition of guitarist Yuichiro Szk (鈴木友一朗) to their lineup.

The band, considered a forerunner of visual kei, made their major debut in 1989 after appearing on TV program Ikaten (イカ天).

AURA disbanded in 1992 before reuniting for a 20th-anniversary concert in 2006, which ultimately led the group to resume their activities. After guitarist Pie tragically passed away from lung cancer in 2013, the band continued with Taiji Fujimoto, formerly of JUDY AND MARY and D.T.R, serving as a support guitarist.

Born in 1994, Yuichiro has been a professional guitarist since the age of 19. He began his career by supporting numerous well-known artists and participating in various events. He is also active with his solo project, SZK PROJECT.

Despite the generational gap between the original members and Yuichiro, the band's statements reflect a shared commitment to moving AURA forward and delivering the best possible sound. Vocalist REDS stated:
"We aim to be a 100-year band, and we are currently diligently preparing to deliver the best possible sound so that we can pass on the baton of AURA that we have inherited to the next generation.
The coverage of visual kei festival “MASKED 2026” continues with a live report for DAY2!

Marking the festival's first-ever two-day run, this historic event is a truly singular moment for visual kei, bringing together a miraculous showcase of both new and established talents.

“MASKED,” a project aimed at spreading visual kei across the globe, held its 2nd festival on May 22nd and 23rd across three iconic stages: Spotify O-EAST, Spotify O-WEST, and duo MUSIC EXCHANGE. On the first day alone, a massive lineup of 29 bands spanning a wide breadth of musical styles and generations took the stage. Each group fiercely showcased their unique perspective on visual kei, giving the festival the raw, competitive energy of a traditional taiban (joint concert). Reflecting on the long history of the visual kei genre, the excitement of a new movement currently taking shape was palpable at every venue. Now onto the second day with 29 bands once again gathering and building hype, a packed audience eagerly awaited the start of the show, their hearts filled with anticipation.

KIZU

The opening act of day two was none other than KIZU (キズ) who headlined the previous day. Having the band back to back on the schedule is an unprecedented move. It shows not only the faith the “MASKED” organizers have in KIZU, but the band's unwavering determination to outdo themselves.

Amidst a palpable tension of the eager audience, the teaser video played just as it had on the first day, and the show finally began. The four members took the stage in the same costumes and makeup as the opening night, choosing “R/E/D/” as their opener which they performed as the previous night's finale. For a moment, it felt like déjà vu, but the intensity and sound they projected were completely different. Under pressure to outdo their last performance, the band seemed physically pushed to their limits as vocalist Lime (来夢) shouted, “I'm at my limit! Give me your power!” during “Heisei” (平成). The audience of course banded together and responded in turn. For their last song, they played “Little Girl wa Yandeiru” (リトルガールは病んでいる), a song that paints a prayer for peace within a brilliant soundscape as Lime declared, “This is the visual rock we believe in!” It was a performance that showed those words were not about the past, but directed toward the future.

Azavana , who headlined last year's duo MUSIC EXCHANGE, took the stage as the second act at O-EAST. They kicked off the show with songs that are darkly intense and alluring such as “Hysteria” and “Byoushin ni Shizumete”(秒針に沈めて) whose high-pitched melodies echoed with melancholy.Though AZAVANA is in their second year of activities, they demonstrated clear growth at “MASKED.”

The lineup proceeded with D=OUT (ダウト)、 MATENROU OPERA (摩天楼オペラ) and vistlip who are all approaching or celebrating their 19th anniversaries. D=OUT in their festive red-and-white outfits had the crowd dancing with their catchy rock vibe while MATENROU OPERA kicked off their set with the pure metal fury of “BURNING SOUL” instantly hooking the audience with their incredible skill. vistlip, who released their new album “DAWN” in April, showcased their latest sound with a lineup of new tracks from the album, including “Mimei” (未明) where vocalist Tomo's (智) gentle voice weaves a fantastical tale, and “Figure,” which daringly incorporates piano and horn arrangements. It's reassuring to see the longevity of these bands, who have supported the scene throughout the 2010s and continue to refine their unique style. Pulsing through each note was a quiet resolve to move forward step by step, with their 20th anniversary in sight.

Over at the O-WEST venue, NICOLAS opened to a full house that forced staff to halt entry at the doors. Similar to the first day, solo acts such as Wagatame (我が為) stood out bringing about smiles with their infectious pop sound while mitsu serenaded the crowd with their rich, emotional melodies.

Rising newcomers sugar proved their mettle by performing two sets including the afterparty. With their drummer Yukichi currently on hiatus, they took the stage with support from Kyonosuke (きょうのすけ), the drummer of their senior "big brother" band, Kizu. sugar lit it up with performances of “Itadakimasu!” (いただきます!) and “Jam,” continuing with the upbeat tracks “Manuke” (マヌケ) and “Ice.” “We're not letting ‘MASKED' end like this!” shouted vocalist Nea with an intense gaze. By the final stretch, he had completely ripped off his ruffled top, screaming full-throttle bare-chested. With not only their shouts but also their powerful melodies striking the audience, they were a band that left quite an impression.

sugar

The act that closed out the packed O-WEST lineup filled with talented performers was NEÜRØMASK, led by frontman Ryoga (猟牙) of RAZOR . Although they were originally an exclusive session band formed for last year's “MASKED HALLOWEEN -DAY3-,” the band returned this time with ex BORN members, guitarists K and Ray, as well as vistlip guitarist Umi (海) and drummer Hirotaka (宏崇) of GA TO CHOU (蛾と蝶) / R-Shitei (R指定). The band played a special setlist of BORN songs and they were even joined by Ryoga's fellow RAZOR bandmates, guitarists Tsurugi (剣) and Kouryuu (衍龍). A chaotic yet fitting frenzy to finish off the set.

NEÜRØMASK

At the third venue, duo MUSIC EXCHANGE, up-and-coming rookies battled it out even more fiercely than on the first day. Opening the show, KUROMITSU (黒蜜) showed their determination by choosing “MASKED 2026” as the venue for their very first live performance since the band's formation. They captivated the audience with energetic songs like “To-yoko OD” (トー横 OD) and “Kimi no HALF TWIN o TaBEtai,” (君のハーフツインを食べたい) bringing a stage presence that proved their immense potential in spite of their status as a debut act.

KUROMITSU

Nakiri (ナキリ), who changed their name from Ayakashi (妖-Ayakashi-), also made their live debut at “MASKED 2026.” With all members dressed in matching hakama outfits, they had a distinctly Japanese aesthetic, and their songs, centered around traditional Japanese melodies, were both mysterious and beautiful.

Nakiri

Next up was RURUNONE (ルルノネ), a band who earned this gig by winning the “MASKED Audition” which they took on following their appearance at “MASKED mini” last year. Yamon (やもん), with his striking white makeup and braided hairstyle, delivered a powerful vocal performance and a candid MC routine that hyped the crowd, drawing even those who had initially watched from a distance closer and closer to the front. They carved their intense songs, musical prowess, and unique visuals into the long-awaited “MASKED” stage.

RURUNONE

Following the last act was the band who won last year's opening act audition, Tokyo Hanayome (東京花嫁). Since auditions have become an integral part of “MASKED”, perhaps a band or artist in attendance at “MASKED 2026” will come to audition too. It's an exciting prospect.

Tokyo Hanayome

The second half of the O-EAST series unfolds with a series of miraculous collaborations that could only have materialized in 2026.

Kicking things off was D'ESPAIRSRAY , who made their comeback last year after a 14-year hiatus and just wrapped up their first solo concert since their return on May 4th. From the very first song, “BORN,” their powerful sound roared through the venue. Vocalist HIZUMI who has made a comeback after overcoming vocal cord issues, dominated with all the the presence of a resurrected demon lord. “We're here to tear this place apart!” he taunted defiantly, filling the space with shouts that tore through the air and his energetic vocals. From the epic and loud new track “RAPTURE” to the thrilling grooves of “DESERT” and the gothic “DEVIL'S PARADE,” their strength lies in their deeply rooted Western rock influences. With the same appeal that has garnered them followers worldwide on full display, they left their mark on “MASKED” as a band that is not only showing no signs of slowing down but is very much in the present.

D'ESPAIRSRAY

Next on the lineup is ARLEQUIN (アルルカン) who have released their new album “imagine” and are in the middle of a long tour. From “DAWN,” which opens with Aki (暁)singing with heart-wrenching emotion, to the danceable four-on-the-floor beat of “Heaven or Hell ~Tsuya hade~,” the band showcased their latest iteration through the tracks on their new album. Aki, wearing the same makeup as in the “MASKED” original artist photos, spoke passionately, “Watching D'ESPAIRSRAY's live performance from the sidelines, I was excited at first, but it gradually started to sting. Since we're standing on the same stage, we're equals, so I can't afford to lose to them,” Gripping the mic, he channeled the daunting weight of performing alongside their legendary predecessors into raw power. The band's performance of “Sekai no Owari to Yoake Mae” (世界の終わりと夜明け前), a ballad that carries a ferocious determination to forge ahead by swallowing both despair and hope whole, was breathtakingly beautiful.

ARLEQUIN

As ARLEQUIN finished, Aki adoringly called out, “Sadie's coming up!” introducing another visual kei titan. Sadie undoubtedly are one of the most anticipated bands to appear at “MASKED” having resumed activities in 2024.The five members made a grand entrance in front of their eager audience and performed classic hits reworked through their revival, such as “Meisai” (迷彩) and “Shingan” (迷彩). They swept the venue off its feet with their evolved heaviness and heartfelt vocals. Vocalist Mao (真緒) showed his playful side when he said, “People tend to think we're a scary band, but we're just a bit like big brothers so please call us ‘oniichan'.” All five members had a level of charisma that was uniquely charming and exceptional. From the high-energy track “CRY MORE” (クライモア) to the finale “Kagerou” (陽炎), which showcased Tsurugi (剣) and Mizuki's (美月) dazzling guitar work, they created a spectacular, frenetic atmosphere.

Sadie

The energy for the grand finale of “MASKED 2026” was at its maximum peak with headliner Royz who opened last year's O-EAST, showcasing the hard work they've put in over the past year leading up to their highly anticipated Budoukan performance in September. The band took to the stage radiating an intense, almost demonic aura. Vocalist Subaru (昴) shouted, “Let's finish this MASKED!” and launched into their latest single “START LINE.” Impressing the audience with their dazzling melodies and overall message, they switched into a more aggressive set with “VENOM” and “TRANSFORM” which had everyone in the crowd headbanging. The band further drew in the audience by infusing variety into their performance, ranging from the retro pop song “Maru no Uchi MISERABLE” (丸の内ミゼラブル) as a sea of green glowsticks swayed in unison to an older throwback with a darker vibe in “JOKER.”

ROYZ

Subaru mentioned the Budokan concert again, saying, “We'll keep doing our best from here on out, so please support us!” As he looked straight ahead, declaring, “Let's go,” the crowd erupted into a massive sing-along of “GIANT KILLER.” It was a finale filled with dazzling light, as everyone gathered in that space united in taking one collective step into the world of tomorrow.

After the show, it was announced that “MASKED HALLOWEEN” would take place over eight days from October 25th to November 1st, and that “MASKED 2027” would be held for three days from May 27th to 29th, 2027. Having surpassed the two days that produced countless memorable moments, what will we see next? Fueled by the passion of the bands and the audience, “MASKED” continues to grow and we simply can't take our eyes off it.

The curtain rises on the visual kei festival “MASKED 2026” for its second year! This DAY1 report covers the event where 29 bands of varying backgrounds representing the scene clash head to head sending sparks flying!

MASKED is a project launched in 2025 to promote visual kei to the world. It began with the hugely successful inaugural circuit festival “MASKED 2025” and was followed by “MASKED HALLOWEEN” to help invigorate the modern Reiwa-era visual kei scene. The second circuit festival, “MASKED 2026” has evolved this year into a two-day event, gathering a wide range of bands and raising the number of performances from 29 to 57. To coincide with this announcement, the project also unveiled its original "MASKED" artist photos which generated immense buzz last year.

Photographer Susumu Miyawaki shot the vocalists of all 57 participating bands in a series of promotional artist photos for the event. Each portrait illustrates the band's unique artistry through their facial expressions, intense gazes, and elaborate hair and makeup styling. Ranging from dark aesthetics to high fashion, streetwear, and pop styles, no single photo is alike, conveying the artists' dedication to their visual aesthetic. To help hype up the festival, a behind the scenes documentary of the photoshoot and videos of the vocalists signing the camera were shared globally on social media platforms.

Tickets for both days instantly sold out and merch utilizing the original artist photos sold successfully at the ‘MASKED 2026 POPUP STORE' in SHIBUYA109 with other locations in China and America. “MASKED” generated quite the whirlwind, gaining more momentum than last year's event.

On May 22nd, crowds of passionate fans gathered outside the venue despite the day's unfortunate rainy weather, unbothered by the chilly temperatures. In addition to the main venues Spotify O-EAST, Spotify O-WEST, and duo MUSIC EXCHANGE, Shibuya REX hosted “MASKED mini” as well as the event afterparty and clubasia held a talk live event. Spanning two full days, the visual kei festival had begun.

As the show's teaser video played, the words “Visual kei: unbound, unlimited, free.” echoed like an oath, officially starting the show. Opener XANVALA took the stage as the first act to a fully packed audience. Just last year, the band performed in “MASKED 2025” at duo MUSIC EXCHANGE and have now successfully risen to Spotify O-EAST, a venue nearly twice the size. Dressed in black and brimming with determination, the band transformed the floor into a world of intensity and beauty with Sai (災), a track they released in April. The band went on to open “MASKED” with a diverse setlist which included the ballad “Koukai ni Saku Hana” (後悔に咲く花), enveloping the crowd with Tatsumi's (巽) alluring vocals.

XANVALA

As if to erase the lingering aroma of beauty and making the most of the rain, XAA-XAA (ザアザア) pulled the room deep into the darkness with a heavy, cynical performance. The third act, Amai Bouryoku (甘い暴力) , kicked off their show with a surprise as vocalist Saki (咲) made his entrance from the second floor balcony. With their energetic lyrics, they swept the entire audience along on a wild ride, while songs like “Kizukuchi” (傷口), which tenderly addresses real pain, and the poignant melody of their latest single, “Sakura,” (咲桜) firmly captured everyone's hearts.

XAA-XAA

Amai Bouryoku

Next up was CODOMO DRAGON (コドモドラゴン) who completely switched up the mood with their loud, EDM tracks “RIGHT EVIV” and “Shishi” (嗤死). The sight of the colorful ring lights glowing was refreshing, demonstrating that the true appeal of “MASKED” lies in how the atmosphere changes with each band. And while the bands hold respect for the festival and other performers, once the live starts pride takes over as if to say “We're the best” that sends sparks flying.

CODOMO DRAGON

Having experience as organizers themselves with their “Bagusami” (バグサミ) event, BugLug is a band that truly understands the synergy of a festival. They opened with the Japanese horror styled “ENMA” followed by the fast-paced “BUKIMI” and danceable “Haisuikou de ikki shite” (排水溝で一気して), inviting the audience into their vibrantly colorful world. With Issei's passionate voice and striking visual effects on songs like “TIME MACHINE,” the band put on a grand-scale performance. Moving forward, there's no doubt the band will pick up speed as they approach “Bagusami 2026” (バグサミ 2026) to be held in the Tokyo-Nagoya-Osaka region for the first time.

BugLug

Over at O-WEST, a diverse array of bands showcased their unique styles starting off with CHAQLA. , who dropped a fusion of hip-hop with groovy nu-metal. “Last year it was Duo, this year it's WEST, and next year it's EAST!” vocalist ANNIE A proclaimed in a freestyle rap, filling the venue with positive vibes. The second act, known as the “hype group” VIVARUSH (ビバラッシュ) added in their energy and turned the O-WEST stage into a bigger party.

CHAQLA.

VIVARUSH

Another highlight of the day at O-WEST was the lineup of solo projects. Mitsuki Sakai (酒井 参輝), guitarist for the band Kiryu (己龍), who are currently on hiatus, took the stage with fellow Kiryu drummer Junji Tokai (遠海准司) as a support member. Carrying the bond of their band with him, Sakai captivated the audience with his powerful vocals and dazzling guitar playing.

Mitsuki Sakai

TAKERU (武尊) who continues his solo work following his time with the band SuG, took to the stage with his boldly defiant, drumless style. Showcasing a strong presence through his blend of diverse musicality and artistic expression, he sent a wave of excitement through the crowd when surprise guest guitarist Umi (海) from vistlip suddenly appeared on stage.

TAKERU

Next was Onigashima (鬼ヶ島), D=OUT (ダウト) vocalist Kouki's (幸樹) solo project. With his main band scheduled to perform the next day, Kouki appeared on stage dancing with a folding fan in hand, delivering a highly entertaining and uniquely Japanese rock performance that differed distinctly from his band. Kouki has made a remarkable name for himself as the enka and kayou singer “Hanamizakura Kouki” (花見桜こうき). One interesting aspect of the current visual kei scene is that while it upholds the traditional band aesthetic, styles unbound by those conventions are also flourishing with a newfound freedom.

Onigashima

Shifting venues, duo MUSIC EXCHANGE was the place to experience the constantly evolving visual kei scene right on the frontlines. This stage featured newcomers who fought their way through a four-round audition process and this is where the scene's next big wave of bands competed. From Kumori Nochi, (曇りのち、) transporting the audience to a retro world with the jazzy vibes of “B-men no Onna” (B面の女), to Rorschach.inc, where twin-tailed vocalist Rorschach 1-gou (ロールシャッハ1号) hyped the crowd with catchy choreography. The sounds and performances were incredibly diverse.

Rorschach.inc

Kumori Nochi,

Taking the stage as the sixth act in a fiercely competitive lineup, DAMNED shook the venue with their heavy metalcore sound and vocalist Hitone's (一音) incredible vocal ability. The "Visual Kei x Metal" approach they champion has now become one of the scene's strongest pillars. Tangentially speaking, many fans were undoubtedly thrilled to see names in the second half of the O-WEST lineup such as DEXCORE , NOCTURNAL BLOODLUST , and DEATHGAZE . These bands have broken barriers with their innovative sounds and experience touring overseas, unleashing an intense chaos upon the MASKED stage.

DAMNED

DEATHGAZE

NOCTURNAL BLOODLUST

Including veterans like DEATHGAZE, the presence of bands with careers spanning over two decades was a major highlight of “MASKED 2026.”

lynch. took to the stage for the second half of the day's performances at O-EAST, having recently celebrated their 20th anniversary last year. Starting with the first track, “GALLOWS,” they unleashed an ironclad ensemble, instantly building a sense of unity that feels climactic. Flashing his leather coat as he strode across the stage, vocalist HAZUKI (葉月) didn't just work up the crowd with his thunderous shouts but also boasted energetically during his MC, “I'm certain we'll give you a great time! EAST, let's tear it up!” They unleashed a relentless barrage of heavy and fast tracks like “MIRRORS” and “OBVIOUS,” leaving no room for a break. With every member's unwavering determination to keep pushing forward etched into the music, they brought the show to a majestic close with the killer tracks “PULSE_” and “ADORE.”

lynch.

Carrying on that same passion was RAZOR , who will celebrate their 10th anniversary this year. Vocalist Ryoga (猟牙) openly declared himself a lynch. fan from the very beginning, and taking the role as the MASKED ambassador, his dedication to this stage was exceptionally strong. Ryoga appeared on stage in a skinhead bald cap identical to the one used in his “MASKED” artist photo, he blew the audience away by beating a wooden temple drum while chanting during the Heart Sutra-infused track "HUMAN ANALOGY." Delivering a dense lineup of tracks including the rolling guitar riffs of "BAD EVIDENCE" and the danceable "UNION," he even dove into the crowd during "DAMIAN FLY." It was a brilliant, wild display that felt like throwing down a gauntlet to the very visual kei scene he respects so deeply.

RAZOR

Next, MUCC ,the oldest band in the “MASKED” lineup, took the stage. As soon as YUKKE's bass kicked off “Daikirai” (大嫌い) the crowd erupted into a wild celebration complete with mosh pits and crowd surfing, just as vocalist Tatsuro (逹瑯) had urged: “Have fun and let loose!” From their indie-era classic “Shoufu” (娼婦) to “Fushichou” (不死鳥) from their latest album “1997”, they stirred everyone's emotions with tracks spanning all eras. Tatsurou, sporting the same ponytail seen in the “MASKED” promotional photos, laughed as he remarked, “I thought everyone would show up with the same hair and makeup as in the promo shots. If Ryoga hadn't been here, I would've ended up looking like some tryhard old guy・・・ (laughs).” Despite this lighthearted moment, the live performance was, of course, full-throttle. Right up until the finale, “Ranchuu,”(蘭鋳) they continued to overwhelm the crowd with a battle-hardened sound honed through countless festivals.

MUCC

After a series of passionate performances, KIZU (キズ) took the stage as the headliner on the first day. Fresh off their nationwide tour “Hououenjun” (鳳凰焔巡) in April, they descended upon “MASKED 2026” in full concert mode. Vocalist Lime (来夢) bellowed, “Let's go, MASKED!!” as they dragged O-EAST into hell with their song “Jigoku.” (地獄) Their new song “Houou,” (鳳凰) released ahead of the tour, was a masterpiece, featuring a breathtaking four-piece groove and dramatic arrangement. The audience held their breath in tense anticipation right up until the very end, when Lime sang with from his soul, “Mitsuketekure tsumugi chiru kono inochi no kakera mo.” (魅つけてくれ 紡ぎ散る この命の欠片も) From there, spurred on by the band's aggressive barrage of “Heisei” (平成) and “Kizukoto,” (傷痕) the audience responded with headbanging and raised fists, reaching the peak of the day's excitement. As the energy continued to rise, the finale was “R/E/D/.” Lime knelt down, straining his voice to the limit, and sang and screamed the lyrics—which vividly etched his love-hate relationship with the scene—with every fiber of his being. Then, declaring, “This is the visual rock that lives today!” he stepped off the stage.

KIZU

“MASKED 2026” wrapped up its first day with a level of energy that definitely surpassed last year's. Following the after-party featuring VIVARUSH (ビバラッシュ), this excitement carried over into the next day.
