Hey, kids. VividCon 2018 DVDs will be going into production on 7/31, at which point there will be a finite supply of those DVD sets in the universe based on the quantity we need to fulfill existing orders.

This means that Tuesday, July 31st is your last day to purchase a < a href="http://vividcon.com/registration/">Supporting membership with DVD</a> or to order extra DVDs if you are an Attending member.

Streaming supporting memberships will continue to be available until the eve of the con.

As always, our hotel is the SpringHill Suites Chicago O'Hare, which has many amenities, some of which we highlight on our hotel page (which will be updated with the 2018 room reservation link and details as soon as our webmistress has a chance to add the info).

Room rates this year are again $126 for a King and $138 for a Double room. All rooms are suites.

Vividcon 2018 registration!

Hi everybody,

We have dates for attending and supporting registration for Vividcon 2018!

ATTENDING

Attending registration will open on Saturday, January 27th, at noon eastern time, and you'll be able to find it here: Vividcon Registration. Please keep in mind that this is the last Vividcon, the SERIES FINALE, and we really don't know what that's going to mean for membership levels. I recommend that you register promptly if you're definitely planning to come, in case we do end up getting a big push.

SUPPORTING

Supporting memberships will be available starting on February 3rd - again, I'll post when we open up registration. No need to watch closely for that one since there's no limit on supporting memberships, but it does help us plan and budget if you register as soon as you're sure you want to - thank you!

OK, you guys, here is the announcement you've been waiting for...VividCon 2018 dates and deets!

VividCon will take place one last time on August 10-12, 2018 at SpringHill Suites by Marriott Chicago O'Hare.

Our registrar will be in contact by email with those who pre-registered at last year's VividCon, and we'll be asking you to secure your registration by paying for it during the month of January. ETA: We'll post something publicly when that contact with pre-registered members happens as an alert so you'll know that if you haven't been contacted it means we don't have you listed as pre-registered.

General registration will open at 12:00 p.m. noon ET on ~~Saturday, February 3, 2018~~ (ETA 12/28/2017: Apparetly I spoke too soon. Exact reg opening date coming soon to an internet connection near you!). Supporting membership will go on sale at a time to be determined later.

Hello, everybody. VividCon is almost here. We've seen a surge of registrations in recent weeks, and we're glad for the continuing interest in this year's con. But, linear time being what it is, this can't continue indefinitely. So have a round up of where we stand and a few deadlines on registrations and purchases of various types...

We have already closed Club Vivid bar wristband and Saturday taco bar lunch ticket sales because we have to lock down our catering order with the hotel on Monday 7/31.

We're going to stop accepting supporting memberships with DVD on Monday 7/31 at 11:59 p.m. CT so that we can prepare the mailing labels and postage for those orders on Tuesday before departing to the con. The supporting member mailing goes out after the con.

Supporting memberships for streaming only will stay available for sure through end of the day on Wednesday 8/2. We may leave the option open a bit longer than that, but please be aware that anyone who buys a supporting membership (streaming only) on Thursday 8/3 risks not making it into the initial email blast on Thursday evening that provides the streaming access details. Streaming begins on Friday 8/4 at 10:00 a.m. CT when vidshow programming starts at the con. I'll do my best to send the info to you as soon as I'm aware of your new registration, but you can expect delays as we must prioritize on site operations beginning with set up all day on Thursday. Bottom line: buy your streaming supporting membership by Wednesday for best results!

We still have some attending member spots available for any of you completely hardcore procrastinators who may still want to attend this year, but spaces are limited, so don't hop any last-minute flights without checking in with us first, please. vividcon@vividcon.com is usually a decent bet for reaching us, although response time can be delayed during the con because of our policy on no glowing screen personal devices in the vidshow room.

Depending on the number of last-minute member sales (attending and supporting w/ DVD), as described above, we may have enough DVD sets to allow attending members who have not already purchased extra DVDs to do so at the con at the current member presale rate of $15 per set. See renenet at the con to inquire about upping your DVD set count for this year. Or see another concom staffer who will check with renenet before returning an official answer. All DVD sets will be distributed to attending members at the con on Sunday afternoon. If you have to leave the con early, please come by the con suite to inquire about collecting your DVD set(s), as the con does not mail DVD sets to attending members who fail to pick them up at the con.

Sorry this post is a bit rambly; I'm near delirious with exhaustion at the moment but still looking forward to all the wonderful vids* later this week!!!

Major announcement about the future of VividCon - please read!

Greetings, friends, casual acquaintances, vidfans, vidders, and other internet denizens,

VividCon will end next year, with a final con in 2018.

This isn't a decision we've made lightly, or one that comes without a lot of mixed feelings; we love VividCon, and we greatly value the years of discussions and friendships and community and vids we've had since the con began in 2002. We'll be sad to see it end – but we feel this is the right time.

Since 2002, the way vids are viewed, distributed, and discussed has changed substantially. In 2002, con vidshows were the only place to see vids in their shiniest, highest quality; now, high quality vids can be easily downloaded online. Over the past few years in particular, we've seen our vid and vidshow submissions trend down, and our vidshow room increasingly emptier during the day as people take advantage of our vid streaming option rather than watching vids in the con space. Panel submissions have also trended down, and getting a full schedule of panel hours has proven more and more difficult over time.

Registration has slowed year-to-year, with a particularly sharp drop-off between 2016 and 2017. We've talked to a lot of long-time con-goers and know the biggest factor in this is The State Of The World Today – this isn't a great year for going to a con, and that's understandable! – but con fatigue, panel topic recycling, and the availability of vids online have all been given as major factors, too, and that's in line with what we've seen behind the scenes for a few years now: a slow but steady decline in overall interest in con programming (setting aside staples like Club Vivid and Premieres).

We could make significant structural changes to VividCon, reduce programming, make it smaller – but odds are we would run into the same problems again before long, and in any case, something that different doesn't feel like VividCon to us. We've decided as a staff to end on a high note and make VividCon 2018 the final run.

Planning for VividCon 2018 is already underway; we're planning it alongside our ongoing work on VividCon 2017, to give ourselves as much time as possible to make it as awesome as we possibly can. We have a lot of great stuff lined up for next year – plenty of fresh programming mixed in with hours of throwback vidshows, different kinds of panels than we've done before just for our final year (which we're excited about and we think you'll love), and of course the biggest and best last hurrahs for VividCon Premieres, Challenge, and Club Vivid that we can possibly make happen.

(As one staff member said: "The last season is always better if the showrunners know it's coming." We've given ourselves the time to plan ahead, and we're going to do our best to tie up all the threads.)

In the meantime, VividCon 2017 gets closer every day. Registration is very low this year, so if you are planning on registering for this year's con but haven't done so yet, please register as soon as possible; our attending registration numbers for the con this year are a good ways off breaking even on our budget. If you are/were on the fence, please come! You'll only have two more opportunities to attend VividCon, and given how different VividCon 2018 will be as a con finale, this year is your last chance to attend a "normal" VividCon.

We do not have exact dates established yet for VividCon 2018 (can't do that until we've locked them in with the hotel), but we will make every effort to line things up so we can announce 2018 event details during VividCon 2017, so people have more time than usual to save the dates and make plans to attend.

Huge thanks to all of our past and current members, as well as to all contributing vidders, for your generous support of VividCon over that last 15 years! It's been so much fun, and we hope to see many of you at next year's VividCon send-off celebration!

Supporting memberships are (finally) available! Terms are the same as last year:

1.) Streaming only for $25.00
You will receive a members-only password to VividCon's online streaming site, which makes each of this year's vidshows available for streaming on demand as soon as it shows at the convention. The streaming site remains available after the con for about a month for your continued enjoyment. We will also include your name in the print program distributed at the convention, space permitting.

2.) Streaming + DVD for $50.00
In addition to receiving the members-only password to the online streaming site and the program acknowledgment (as described above), we will mail you a copy of the con DVD set and a copy of the print program at the conclusion of the convention.

I am not a huge fan of country & western music, but I’m wide-open otherwise. If you have specific likes or dislikes, or a general theme in mind, please let me know. I’d hate for you to get a fast-moving EDM vid when what you really wanted was a mournful folk piece.

I tend to think of my strengths as good music choices, lyrics matching, and motions hitting on the beat. I like to make vids that entertain and make you want to move. I am not so good with big idea or effects-heavy vids, but if you’ve got a strong vision, I’ll do my best.

I have eclectic vidding tastes, so if you have an experimental vid idea, bring it on. Femslash is a personal favorite of mine. I'm willing to vid any type, like happy, dark, dance-y, comedy, shipper, ensembles, character studies, etc.

For the vid, the bidder can be hands-on or hands-off for the vidding process.

For music, I'm willing to vid any genre and also unconventional vidding audio. Literally anything.

MOVIES- 300: Rise of An Empire; The Conjuring series; Crimson Peak; The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015); The Matrix Trilogy; any horror film as long as you have a song and a way to give me the movie source if I cannot find it on my own.
I watch a lot of movies and I don't want to list them all, so check with me and I might say yes.

TV: Drunk History (I recently vidded it and still have the source if you have a song/idea already); Flesh and Bone; Hannibal (NBC), only Bedelia, Alana, Margot, Beverly, or Reba centered; Merlin, only Morgana centered or a pairing with Morgana. I'd love to have multiple options, if possible, and if it turns out that I really can't make a vid happen to a particular song for some reason, I'd like the option to vid an alternate song of your choice -- or we can work together on finding a song that we're both happy with and that works well for your idea. I've got a few vid songs without homes, too, if you're feeling stumped for music.

OTHER PREFERENCES: I'll vid pretty much any pairing and I'm a big fan of character studies. Probably most interested in vidding sci-fi, fantasy, superheroes, etc., but I'm also always ready to vid classic films to inappropriate(?) songs. I don't feel as confident with humor or ensemble vids as I do with some other genres, but am willing to discuss options. I tend to vid simply and without much in the way of effects or soundwork (source audio, etc.), so please keep that in mind when you consider me.

Check the auction post for details, but basically it's, "I'd like to make a vid for someone who wants one!", and then we auction your skills off to an interested party, and you partner up with them to come up with whatever vid best suits you both.

The Xena fandom seemed to exist in its own internet bubble creating a unique language for their shippers ("ubers") and their own style of vids and vidding. We would love to explore this huge, classic femslash fandom and the different types of vids that existed and co-existed within this bubble. Also it would be great to hear from actual fans who vidded it at the time vs. new fans who are vidding it now.

You've probably heard the vidding "rule" that vids should be no longer than three-and-a-half minutes -- or four minutes, at the very most! -- but by golly, sometimes that's just not enough time for the vid to do what it needs to do. How can vidders keep their audiences engaged for four-and-a-half, five minutes... or even longer? Song choice, pacing, concept... we'll watch some long-ass vids and then talk about what makes them successful.

Murder Must Foul | VJ/mod: sisabet

We'll look at a wide array of murdery vids and discuss them from a tech/narrative standpoint: building suspense in a whodunnit vid, pov differences where you are the killer, you are the victim, bait and switch, etc.

Vidding as Poetry | VJ/mod: lola

In this panel and vidshow, we will consider ways in which we might understand vidding as poetry. Arguably, we could say that all vidding is audiovisual poetry. But might we identify some vids as following logics of a poetic mode? Speaking of film documentaries, Bill Nichols identifies a poetic mode that favors “mood, tone, and texture,” and that “moves away from the ‘objective’ reality of a given situation or people, to grasp at an ‘inner truth’ that can only be grasped by poetical manipulation.” We’ll explore the work of vids that favor mood, tone, and texture to convey an “inner truth” or to offer an emotional interpretation of landscape, narrative, character, or themes. As we do so, we’ll consider the breadth of what might be considered the poetic mode of vidding.

Structure of a Vidshow Redux | mod/VJ: Trelkez

Have you ever wanted to put together a themed vidshow, but weren't sure how? In the past, we've discussed the broad strokes of vidshow structure and vidshow types; this time around, we're actually going to build a vidshow in the room, with audience participation, to demonstrate the nuts and bolts of themed vidshow construction. Please note that this poll is just to gauge interest! Fandom panels will be announced next week, and the llama will be announced... sometime between now and the con, definitely. :D This poll is a short one; it will be open until Saturday night.

Call for vidding volunteers--Vividcon 2017 auction!

Hey there, vidmakers! Would you like to make a vid?

Vividcon is looking for vidders willing to offer their services in this year's VVC Vid Auction Fundraiser!

WHY?:

VividCon is a fun and invigorating convention about vidmaking and vidwatching, but it has a small membership and high tech costs. Fundraising that will keep membership fees under control is important -- especially when it results in more vids for everyone to enjoy!

HOW?:

A vidder offers to make a vid to order, with any appropriate conditions -- the fandoms/sources they'll work in, how the song will be chosen (as long as both parties are happy with the final choice), preferred styles of music, how much input the bidder can have on clip choices, etc. -- and then we hold an online auction, with the proceeds to go to the con.

It's a fun way to benefit the con, and also it gives non-vidders a chance to participate in the making of a vid. Who hasn't wanted to draft a willing vidder into their fandom, or get a chance to bring someone else's dream vid to life?

WHO?:

The auction is open to anyone, con members and non-members alike. We usually end up with a slate of 4-6 vidders. Bidders can be solo individuals, or groups who've pooled their money together.

(So if you're thinking, how could I win an auction if I only have 5 spare bucks?, grab some friends with their own 5 spare bucks and presto you have a bidding cabal!)

WHEN?:

Auction vids will be due by Friday 23 June.

The auction itself opens on Saturday 25 March and ends at 11:59pm US Eastern time on Saturday 1 April. Then the vidders will have almost 3 months to complete their vids. If for any reason a vid doesn't get done, we will of course refund the money to the bidder in full, and then it's up to the vidder whether they eventually finish the vid or not.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER?

We'll be showing the auction vids in the first vidshow at the con! The vidders and their winning bidders will each get one DVD copy of all the auction vids. The bidders also get a credit in the vid titles (vidder's technology permitting) and in the program book, along with our gratitude for contributing to the con. ♥

WHAT DO I DO?:

If you're a vidder who wants to participate, and you're confident you could make a vid for your recipient between the beginning of April and June 23rd, would you please send an email to dorindafandom@gmail.com sometime before the end of next Saturday, 18 March?

Please include details about your conditions: available fandoms/sources, who chooses the music, things you're flexible about, things you won't do, needs & preferences, etc., as well as a link to your online site/journal/tumblr, if you have one, and your vids online if any.
