High-End Digital Assets for a Historical Epic
Ridley Scott’s Napoleon is one of the most ambitious historical epics of recent years—a sweeping account of Bonaparte’s rise and fall requiring period-accurate environments at a scale few productions attempt. Visualskies was engaged to provide a comprehensive scanning programme across the production, capturing environments, props, key cast and supporting actors as highly detailed textured 3D assets for the VFX pipeline.
Our team worked across both studio sets and exterior locations, deploying terrestrial LiDAR and advanced photogrammetry to record the architectural geometry and surface detail of the period environments, every significant prop on set, and hundreds of cast members. The resulting assets combined millimetre-accurate geometry with photoreal texture capture—ready for direct deployment into the production’s digital environments.

Data Delivered
Deliverables included highly detailed textured meshes and registered point clouds formatted to meet the pipeline requirements of ILM, MPC and BlueBolt VFX—the three studios responsible for the film’s visual effects sequences. All data was delivered to production naming conventions, scaled and coordinated to ensure seamless integration across teams working on different sequences simultaneously.
Napoleon’s production design represented a significant creative achievement in its own right. Visualskies’ role was to translate that physical craft into a comprehensive digital asset library—one accurate and detailed enough to stand alongside the photographed frame without compromise.
