weeeell no response so i guess y'all didnt have time to work it out or this wasnt the right place to ask.

A friend emailed me a lovely little program which does exactly what I asked for - if anyone else would like to receive it (basically it's a web page with a bit of code behind it - you create a sub folder to your personal outlook calendar, set the page as the homepage and it works it all out for you) I'm happy to share.
