Someone once told me, “Make your business your job until it’s your only job.” What she meant was, until you are able to make enough money to live working at your chosen business, make sure to spend time every day, every week, sharpening your skills, making contacts and learning.
Sharpen Your Skills – Do you find that in order to succeed as you would like you need to learn more about Excel, read more about e-commerce, or jump in and start using the program you bought but have been reticent to start using? Well then go for it. Make time each day or at least each week to practice and learn.
Make Contacts – You may also spend time at the end of each week making contacts with those you’ve dealt with that week but don’t forget to reconnect with those who you’ve not spoken to for a while. It’s never too late to re-establish some sort of connection and customers may appreciate your letting them breath before contacting them. And don’t forget to jot down some new contacts you’d like to make. And then make them.
Learning: Sharpening your skills is more directed towards skills you already possess. Learning is more directed towards learning something brand new. Learn about a new customer segment you wouldn’t have thought of serving or a new product or skill that you thought was not something your existing customers would want.
However you choose to do it, carve out time to sharpen your skills and aptitudes until you are able to make your business your only job.
