Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance

Curious what you all think out there - The few I've talked to before now are divided - either they love it or hate it.

I like some things, don't like others. I like how they made weapon combat a lot easier to pull out, and the style changes do allow for some interesting ways to mix it up without being a huge pain in the ass to pull off during a fight. This game at times plays like a strange hybrid of MK4-style look with sprinklings of Tekken-like mechanics thrown in, all with a dollop of very much old-school MK dial-a-combo mechanics thrown in as well.

Dislikes include things like losing the old jumping mechanics (as in you can't kick/punch when jumping away - in some moments in the old games a firm defensive/offensive move) - and the new jump kick is just too easy to counter - although this may be an intentional design motif to get people into just ground fighting more often. Otherwise - just a general feel like it lacks a unique flavor and rather borrowed from a stew of other ideas to get the feeling it creates - not that this hybrid doesn't come off as somewhat unique in its own right, just wish they'd been a bit more inventive.

Certain characters were just, well..stupid (Bo 'Rai Cho) or not all that well done (see Kitana and Mavado)......

Shang Tsung - nice to see they finally did him in what is IMHO a good style and not the often-complained about ultra-cheap way in which he was set up in earlier versions........

I think this is a worthwhile entry - whether it's enough to keep the series going is yet to be seen.

Thoughts?
