A bit on the utter mess that is Devil May Cry 2
Captial idea, Lynx ;). So, on to the discussion at hand....
So the first Devil May Cry was, IMHO, very nicely done, mixing a lot of elements together into a very nice game. First off, the resident-evil style creepy-vibe at hyper-speed, plus the nicely done backdrops, creatures, the music - just the ambience in general made this a great game. Yes, at some points it came off as a bit cheesy-uber-gothic, but I don't think they over-did it.
Now with that out of the way, on to the second one - so did they improve a lot? Well - all the things they improved on, there was plenty that just went down the tubes.
Improved - importing a bit of RE flavor when getting to play as Dante and Lucia, but this is, just like in RE, only a moderate add-on to overall value of gameplay. Background-wise, there is major improvement in that you play the game in many more open areas wherein you can get a feel for the size/enormity of the environment. This eliminates the somewhat "cooped up" feeling some locations in the original had. And the overall improved appearance of the "Devil trigger" modes is a nice touch. These are good improvements in and of themselves, yet....
Not so good - First off, the POV in DMC 2 - absolutely god-awful - instead of the "right in your face" shots that were plentiful through the whole of the first DMC, it often looks like you're watching all your battles through a telephoto lens 2 miles away in DMC 2. And also, the appearance of the monsters in general - they just seem kind of bland and uninspired, the detail level has gone way down as compared to what was seen in the first one. And the bosses - what were once fierce spectacles of "Oh my god I have to FIGHT that?!?!?" are now modestly creepy something-or-others that provoke more yawning than they do shock. And the difficulty level also seemed to be dialed WAY down - I only recall one boss that caused any trouble, and the end boss was just - well - Mundus was this spectacle of insanity to top so many end-bosses before, and DMC2's end boss just....it was lame, really.
Comments, thoughts, suggestions? What could be done to make it better? Did you think maybe it was good as is?
