By assisting with non-medical daily tasks, the program plays a vital role in supporting healthy aging across the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home support services vary by community and may include: light housekeeping, grocery and meal services, light yard work, minor home repairs, prescription pick-up\/delivery, transportation, snow removal, group activities, friendly visits and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A unique feature of Better at Home is its <strong>\u201cseniors planning for seniors\u201d<\/strong> approach. Beyond the delicious food, she values the laughter, camaraderie, and sense of connection with others. Her life has had its ups and downs, but she remains immensely grateful for the special people who have made a significant difference in her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Anne, the Better at Home program has a profound impact, whether it&#8217;s the company of friends during a shared meal, the support of a helpful volunteer in her yard, or the caring check-ins from people who genuinely care about her well-being. She acknowledges, &#8220;I do what I can and accept the help when it is offered.&#8221; The program has truly enhanced her life and enriched her sense of community and support.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024-25, Better at Home operated in <strong>97 <\/strong>communities delivering <strong>363,725<\/strong> essential non-medical home support services to <strong>20,126<\/strong> seniors residing in their respective regions. Notably, <strong>7,665 <\/strong>of these individuals were newcomers to the program, accessing services for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/betterathome.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn More<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-create-block-ds-accordion accordion\"><div class=\"accordion-header\"><h3 class=\"h4\"><button class=\"accordion-toggle\" aria-label=\"Read More\" aria-controls=\"therapeutic-activation-program-for-seniors-(taps)\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS)<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"accordion-body\" aria-hidden=\"true\" hidden id=\"therapeutic-activation-program-for-seniors-(taps)\">\n<p>The United Way BC Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS) creates welcoming, inclusive spaces where older adults\u2014especially those facing physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges\u2014can connect, thrive, and feel a sense of belonging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through structured group activities that engage the body, mind, and spirit, TAPS helps older adults maintain independence and improve overall well-being. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A typical session may include light physical activity, shared learning through workshops or webinars, nutritious meals, and meaningful social interaction, all designed to reduce isolation and promote holistic health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p><strong>The program has had a positive impact on seniors like Pat.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the loss of her beloved husband and facing declining health, Pat relocated to Osoyoos, BC to be closer to her children. The transition was difficult, and grief made it hard for her to feel at home in a new community. \u201cI had a very loving marriage,\u201d she shared. \u201cSometimes I don\u2019t feel like living without my husband.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, Pat was introduced to the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS), facilitated by Desert Sun Counselling &amp; Resource Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The TAPS program had a clear purpose &#8211; to bring joy, companionship, and wellness back into the lives of isolated seniors. And that&#8217;s exactly what it did for Pat. By offering a variety of activities, nutritious meals, and much-needed social interactions, it became a lifeline for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I must say I am feeling better since joining this group. In the blink of an eye, she found herself thrust into the role of a primary caregiver, responsible for assisting her partner with his daily needs. It was a challenging and overwhelming situation for the Surrey, BC, resident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her search for guidance and support, Jaswant reached out to the DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society. They connected her with the Newcomer Family and Friend Caregiver Support Program. From that moment on, Jaswant felt like she had found a lifeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Ever since I registered, I&#8217;ve never missed a single session. The support groups, educational workshops, and 1-1 referral and information have helped me on my caregiving journey. I&#8217;ve gained knowledge in all aspects of ethical caregiving and self-care,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Feeling a sense of social connection with other program participants, Jaswant expressed how it reminded her that she wasn&#8217;t alone in this challenging journey. &#8220;A heartfelt thanks to all involved in making this program a reality.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>United Way BC\u2019s Healthy Aging network of <strong>16<\/strong> agencies delivered <strong>42,390<\/strong> services to <strong>2,139<\/strong> caregivers of older adults across BC in 2024-25.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-create-block-ds-accordion accordion\"><div class=\"accordion-header\"><h3 class=\"h4\"><button class=\"accordion-toggle\" aria-label=\"Read More\" aria-controls=\"social-prescribing\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Social Prescribing<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"accordion-body\" aria-hidden=\"true\" hidden id=\"social-prescribing\">\n<p>The United Way BC Social Prescribing program offers a holistic approach to health care that recognizes the powerful influence of social and environmental factors\u2014such as isolation and lack of community connection\u2014on a person\u2019s overall well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through this program, older adults are connected to non-medical services and activities in their communities that support their physical, mental, and emotional health. Referrals are made by primary care physicians or other health professionals, helping seniors access the support they need to thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Services may include walking groups, art classes, and volunteer opportunities. Each activity is designed to reduce isolation, support mental well-being, and enhance quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the heart of the program are Community Connectors\u2014trusted individuals who work directly with older adults to understand their needs and link them to meaningful local resources and services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The impact of Social Prescribing is far-reaching, leading to improved mental health, reduced social isolation, enhanced quality of life, and a decreased reliance on medical interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p><strong>One of the beneficiaries of this program is Bevy-Ann Hansen. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After her husband\u2019s passing, Bevy-Ann Hansen returned to Canada from the USA in 2020, facing the challenges of resettling with no income, social network, or accessible housing to accommodate her wheelchair. Isolated and overwhelmed, she struggled to find stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A turning point came when a hospital social worker, following a fall, referred her to the Social Prescribing program at Archway Community Services. Together, these groups help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strengthen the capacity and sustainability of the CBSS sector<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Raise awareness of the sector\u2019s impact and value<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foster collaboration and coordination across communities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop a unified voice to advocate for healthy aging in BC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This collaborative approach ensures that initiatives remain responsive, impactful, and aligned with the priorities of the communities we serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Provincial Working Groups<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>United Way BC supports provincial&nbsp;Working Groups and Advisory Committees&nbsp;that bring together experienced leaders from the CBSS sector to address key issues facing older adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guided by&nbsp;members&nbsp;of the&nbsp;Provincial <a href=\"https:\/\/uwbc.ca\/program\/healthy-aging\/#cbss-leadership-council\">CBSS Leadership Council<\/a>, these groups focus on priority areas&nbsp;identified&nbsp;through&nbsp;Provincial Summits on Aging, community consultations and other engagement activities, ensuring that solutions are informed, collaborative, and responsive to the evolving needs of seniors across BC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-create-block-ds-accordion accordion\"><div class=\"accordion-header\"><h3 class=\"h4\"><button class=\"accordion-toggle\" aria-label=\"Read More\" aria-controls=\"housing\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Housing<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"accordion-body\" aria-hidden=\"true\" hidden id=\"housing\">\n<p>The Seniors Housing Working Group has taken meaningful steps to address BC\u2019s growing seniors housing crisis by developing advocacy materials, hosting educational webinars, and leading a workshop at the 2024&nbsp;Provincial Summit on Aging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their efforts are focused on advancing sector-driven&nbsp;advocacy&nbsp;priorities: expanding subsidized&nbsp;rent-geared-to-income&nbsp;housing, improving&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bchousing.org\/housing-assistance\/rental-assistance-programs\/SAFER\">Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER)<\/a>,&nbsp;and increasing access to on-site&nbsp;supports&nbsp;in senior housing\u2014ensuring seniors have the stability and care they need to age with dignity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-create-block-ds-accordion accordion\"><div class=\"accordion-header\"><h3 class=\"h4\"><button class=\"accordion-toggle\" aria-label=\"Read More\" aria-controls=\"transportation\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Transportation<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"accordion-body\" aria-hidden=\"true\" hidden id=\"transportation\">\n<p>With support from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.best.bc.ca\/\">Better Environmentally Sound Transportation (BEST)<\/a> the Transportation Working Group has&nbsp;taken action to improve&nbsp;mobility for older adults by&nbsp;strengthening its&nbsp;partnership&nbsp;with BC Transit to support education&nbsp;and&nbsp;advocate&nbsp;for expanded&nbsp;services&nbsp;for older adults living in rural and remote areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Group also&nbsp;helps&nbsp;guide funding decisions for&nbsp;United&nbsp;Way BC\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwbc.ca\/program\/healthy-aging\/#programs\">Aging in Motion&nbsp;(AIM): Transportation Supports and Innovation&nbsp;grant&nbsp;<\/a>and&nbsp;they&nbsp;collaborated to&nbsp;co-develop a Volunteer Drivers Program Handbook, including an insurance insert with ICBC, to strengthen community-based transportation solutions across BC.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-create-block-ds-accordion accordion\"><div class=\"accordion-header\"><h3 class=\"h4\"><button class=\"accordion-toggle\" aria-label=\"Read More\" aria-controls=\"mental-health-and-wellness\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Mental Health and Wellness<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"accordion-body\" aria-hidden=\"true\" hidden id=\"mental-health-and-wellness\">\n<p>A working group has recently been established to address the mental health and wellness crises facing many seniors and also impacting frontline CBSS staff and volunteers.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The primary focus of the group will be to enhance&nbsp;existing partnerships and advocate for more coordinated responses among agencies and government entities. This collective effort aims to provide increased mental health support to older British Columbians and their caregivers through a range of innovative service models and approaches.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Provincial and Regional Consultations<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>United Way BC\u2019s <strong>Provincial and Regional Consultations<\/strong> are vital opportunities to strengthen the CBSS sector across British Columbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Held in alternating years with the <strong>Provincial Summit on Aging<\/strong>, these consultations bring together community organizations, caregivers, and sector leaders to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Share innovative programs, strategies, and resources making a difference in communities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify challenges and gaps in services for older adults<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explore new opportunities for collaboration, training, and resource development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These gatherings help shape priorities for future programming and support, ensuring that older adults across BC continue to benefit from responsive, community-driven services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Consultations will resume in 2025\/26.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Provincial Summit on Aging<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Every two years, United Way BC hosts the <strong>Provincial Summit on<\/strong> <strong>Aging<\/strong>, a province-wide gathering that brings together older adults, caregivers, community organizations, academics, and government representatives to explore the current state and future of aging in BC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Summit celebrates sector successes, shares stories, and fosters collaboration across health, government, and academic networks. Over the course of eight months, teams from CBSS non-profit agencies across the province participate in this initiative.
