Application and Characters

The Application Process
Approving people on the basis of their characters is a little superfluous in a game where your character is most likely going to change and no one can anticipate what the plot will require or prohibit. As such, in place of a traditional approval system, we'll be using a peer-review system. You are, de-facto, accepted, and may post up information about your character in any format you like, be it a bio or writing sample or first person introduction. Players are then encouraged to comment on your post, either to say it looks good or to offer feedback.

Am I allowed...
To make my character related to a canon character?
To do so runs the risk of retcons, but yes, provided you satisfy the following criteria:

To put my character in a relationship with a canon character?
This functions under the same rules as the above – which effectively disqualifies a relationship with anything but an incidental character.

To play a member of one of the canonical factions within the city?
Yes, but your character should satisfy the canonical entrance requirements and have an appropriate skillset.

To create a new faction for my character to belong to?
Yes, absolutely. Once the parameters for this new group are defined, it becomes an artifact of the world, and you should allow fellow players who are interested to add their characters to it well (provided they satisfy your entrance requirements).

To play a character with an advanced, special, or trademark techniques, such as fire-breathing, pinpoint archery, vinebending or metalbending?
Yes, though we should strive to keep these powers roughly proportionate to their appearance in the world.

To play a member of the nobility?
Yes, though keep in mind that the wealthy in Republic City may not so much resemble the nobility we’ve seen in the past.

To play an antagonistic character that works against the majority of the cast?
Yes, though villainy for its own sake (in the form of, say, “crazy” serial killers) is most likely a poor idea.

To play an Airbender?
A tentative no. It remains to be seen if there are any airbenders outside of Tenzin’s family.

To have met or known an important canon character?
A tentative no on having known an important character – we simply don’t have access to enough information about these characters to determine if the information is plausible.

To use a real person for a PB?
Please stick to animated PBs.

To play a character who is blonde or has an unnatural hair colour?
The name of the game is making a character who could plausibly appear in the world. If you're playing a character that seems likely to dye their hair blonde or to an unusual colour, and you'll take the social consequences for it, then go ahead!

Don’t be wallpaper
It usually goes without saying that to upstage your canon is bad form, and so I will skip the explicit restrictions on spiritbending and animalbending and playing the other Avatar. What’s more important is that, in your inevitable-yet-paranoid avoidance of Mary Sue-dom, you don’t forget that your character is allowed and indeed encouraged to be active, relevant and unique. You have permission to be interesting.

Prepare to be Jossed
The nature of the game is such that things you establish always run the risk of being overwritten by canon. Even those who “play it safe” will never be risk-free. Accept that you may need to perform triage on your ideas or occasionally discard them completely – your community will mourn the loss with you.

Let Korra be your guide
As much as possible, we'd like to keep true to the tone of the world. Everything in the game should be plausible within the confines of what we know.

Content also shouldn't be too much racier or darker than what we get from the show, even if it is more sophisticated or complex (put bluntly: no gore or porn).

Play nice with the other children
This game is chiefly a collaborative environment. The ever-changing nature of the setting makes it all the more important that we as players are willing to create and repair with one another. It’s imperative that you be willing and able to give and receive suggestion and critique.

Posting format
General
The majority of the game is played-by-post in the public community, where characters are presumed to be face to face. Writing style should be narrative standard (quotation marks for dialogue rather than encapsulated emotes) but if all parties involved in the thread agree to a different system beforehand, that's perfectly fine. There is no minimum word requirement.

Journal
Your character’s journal is for use at your own discretion, mostly. You can use it mostly for OOC housekeeping, you can use it for crack and AU, you can use it like an IC bulletin board, you can use it under the pretext that exchanges made within are conducted by carrier pigeon. Should we find telephone technology in the age of Korra, that will probably be the chief function of journal posts.

What is United Republic?
United Republic is a Legend of Korra roleplay with a twist – the game is a blind play-a-long. Players create characters contemporary to Korra’s adventures and, with each new episode, react to the movements and changes made by the Avatar. In Republic City’s battle between Benders and Equalists, we play the citizens on both sides or caught in the crossfire.

How does it work?
At the outset of the game, when the first episode has aired, everyone creates/finalizes an original player character. Plot is delivered by each new episode, and characters, storylines and the world itself are updated with the emerging canon. Though some pre-emptive collaboration and planning can be done to establish setting and character, the unstable nature of the game requires agility and flexibility. The end result will be freeform at its finest.

How will it be run?
United Republic will be a community-moderated game. That means that while there are administrators who are responsible for distributing information and orchestrating the community, you don't need their permission for much of anything. Problem solving and decision making will happen collectively, and you get to call the shots for things that concern you and your character.

Who can play?
We’re looking for collaborative players who can think and move on their feet. Your prior RP experience or writing level doesn't matter - all are welcome. Finally, it should go without saying that joining involves keeping up with Legend of Korra - but that's not likely to be a problem, is it?
