Additional silent study space in the Library

_DSC0191Over the summer the Self Access Language Centre (SALC) rebranded to the Language Learning Zone and moved from the front of Level 5 to the back of Level 3 of the Library. In its place and by popular demand, the Library has created a new individual silent study zone. The room has seating for 36 students and each desk has a double power socket and USB charging points.

IMGP5758 (002)Faculty Librarian for Humanities & Social Sciences, Emma Stuart Edwards said “This is a bright and airy location and we know students who come to Level 5 for silent study will really enjoy working here”. Pro-Vice Chancellors Peter Lambert and Jonathan Knight visited the Library last week and admired the new space.  They are pictured here with Helen Rhodes, Subject Librarian (School of Management) and Emma Stuart Edwards, Faculty Librarian (Humanities & Social Sciences).

Library card required to enter Library from 10 October

From 10 October, the gates at the Library entrance will be secured.  This means that everyone who wishes to enter the Library will need to present their current library card at the turnstiles to enter.

Library staff will be working during the day to help new members of the University enter through the gates with their card.

The gates are secured throughout the semester and it is expected that everyone who wants to enter the Library to make use of resources or services based in the building will use their card for access at all times.

The Library Issue Desk can provide replacements for lost and damaged cards between 9am and 445pm, Monday to Friday.  Please note that there is a £5 charge for replacing a lost library card.

New Faculty Librarian for Humanities and Social Sciences

From Monday 4 September Emma Stuart Edwards has taken up the position of Faculty Librarian for Humanities & Social Sciences, with Subject Librarian responsibilities for the Department of Economics and Department of Politics, Languages and International Studies.Capture

Emma has been working at the University of Bath Library for nearly ten years, having previously supported both the Faculty of Engineering and Design, Faculty of Science and Widening Participation. She replaces Katy Jordan as Faculty Librarian, following Katy’s change of role within the Library to join Research Services.

Emma gained FHEA status in 2016. She is interested in the role of the librarian in the classroom. She is keen to ensure students understand the practical applications of what they are being taught within library workshops so they can make best use of library resources in their coursework and use these skills in their future employment. Emma is “looking forward to working with H&SS staff and students”.

Kate Robinson, University Librarian, said: “I am delighted that Emma will be leading the Library’s Humanities and Social Sciences team. She has a wealth of ideas and a huge enthusiasm for the Library and its users. Katy Jordan leaves a strong legacy on which to build, but I am quite sure that Emma will relish this challenge”.

You can find Emma in room 5.01 on Level 5 of the Library, or contact her on ext. 5613, or by email e.stuartedwards@bath.ac.uk
