  • One click from a search result to the online resource.
  • Click on the title in the search results to see all the information and actions on one full record page.
  • Easier to filter out types of records from the results. Click on the “Exclude This” icon to the right of the filter:

World Environment Day 2018: Win a Library Keep-Cup!

Millions of tonnes of plastic waste enter the world’s oceans each year, causing lasting damage to marine ecosystems. Help us to reduce plastic waste and recycle. Our top tips include:

  • Avoid disposable coffee cups and use a re-usable lidded cup, flask or Keep-Cup instead
  • Recycle disposable coffee cups in dedicated bins on campus. There is one located in the Library’s Snack Area on Level 2 which is to the right of the University Security & Reception desk
  • Standard 12 oz Keep-Cups are compatible with the Library coffee machines in our Snack Area, so you can avoid using disposable cups altogether if you have a Keep-Cup
  • Wherever possible use lidded, re-usable drinks bottles. If you do use a disposable plastic bottle, put it into a plastics recycling bin rather than general waste bins which go to landfill

The Library updated its refreshments regulations earlier this year to allow re-usable lidded cups including Keep Cups. This means hot drinks like coffee can now be consumed inside the Library without increasing landfill waste and damage to the environs from spillages.  You may also have noticed that  Catering around campus have reduced plastic waste already, for example by providing paper rather than plastic straws, selling Keep-Cups and setting offers based on their use. This is all part of the wider Leave No Trace campaign which the Library also supports.

To celebrate World Environment Day, June 5 2018, the Library is offering University of Bath staff and students a chance to win a free Library keep-cup by entering a prize draw todakeepcup3y. Answer the following question:

How many million tonnes of plastic enter the world’s ocean annually?

A)  4 million tonnes
B)  6 million tonnes
C) 8 million tonnes

Email your answer to library@bath.ac.uk today for a chance to win

THANK YOU FOR TAKING PART – THE COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED. The correct answer is C) 8 million tonnes. We received 13 correct entries on the day and luckily have just enough cups for all to have a Keep-Cup each.

Summer Vacation Loans 2018

Library books that are borrowed or successfully renewed from Friday 25 May will be issued for the duration of the Summer vacation up until Wednesday 3 October (or the expiry date on your library card if it is sooner).

While items can still be requested by other borrowers and recalled during the vacation, you will find that the 3 October due date will not change and that you do not have to return them before then.

However, if you are in a position to return recalled loan items during the vacation other library users will be very grateful to have the items available.

Automatic weekly renewals will be reinstated in the week leading up to 3 October.

Short Loan items will remain in the Short Loan Collection for 24 hour loan throughout the Summer vacation period and are subject to daily late fees as normal.

Fines are only charged on items that have fallen overdue by a number of weeks or when borrowers have lost a library book.

If you have any queries about your loans during the Summer please contact the Issue Desk via:

The Library will be staffed throughout the vacation period – with the exception of national holidays – and the building is open as normal for study 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Silent and quiet study during revision and exams

quietPlease be considerate to your fellow students during the revision period by keeping noise to a minimum on the quiet floors (Levels 3 and 4) and maintaining silence on Level 5.

Quiet and silent study space is very popular at this time of year. As a result, students have requested that unattended personal items left in order to reserve Library desks are removed to allow others to use the space. Please be aware that Library staff may remove unattended personal items and take them to Security for safekeeping.

For information on Library spaces (group, individual, bookable) and other study venues around campus see: study areas and bookable workrooms.

There are also other rooms available on campus including the various Learning Commons and Graduate Commons.

Opening times for the Learning Commons during May 2018 are extended:

  • 6WS:  Mon-Fri 8:00 am – 10:00 pm; Sat-Sun 8:00 am – 8:00 pm
  • Norwood House Level 2:  Mon-Fri 8:00 am – 10:00 pm; Sat-Sun 8:00 am – 8:00 pm (includes bookable group work and interview rooms)
  • Virgil Building:  Mon-Fri 8:00 am – midnight;  Sat-Sun 10:00 am – midnight. Except for Bank Holiday Mondays, 7 and 28 May, open 10:00 am – 08:00 pm
  • Library Level 2 Learning Commons: 24/7

The University is again making additional spaces available to students for study. Dates and times of rooms available are listed by week.

Good luck with your exams!

Library boosts A-Level pupils’ chances of success

During the inter-semester break and Easter vacation, the Library welcomed sixth form students from local schools to make the most of our fantastic resources and enhance the quality of their research for their Extended Project Qualifications. A total of 130 pupils representing five schools have visited us already this year and during the Summer vacation we expect many more.

The EPQ and why it matters

The Extended Project Qualification is an optional qualification for gaining UCAS points, equivalent to half an A-level. Its focus is on developing “independent research and project management” skills, which are highly valued by both employers and educators. Students formulate their own research topic and are challenged to “research, critically select, organise and use information”* from different sources. The Library is well-placed to provide access to both academic resources and to training that helps prepare many students not only for completing the project, but for independent study in Higher Education. Now that AS levels are no longer taken, universities are increasingly reliant on success at EPQ level to gauge future students’ academic skill levels and also, increasingly, use it as an indicator of their passion for, and knowledge of, their chosen degree subject.

What the library can offer

Library staff work closely with the Widening Participation Office and deliver information skills training to link schools as well as offering EPQ support – a service that we have provided to local schools for more than 12 years now. Under the guidance of the Library’s professionally qualified information specialists, these pupils can access a wide range of books and online resources to research their chosen subjects. Topics this year ranged from Formula One to Forensic Science, Spanish poetry to Speciesism, Antisemitism to AI technology – and there was something here for everyone. For our link schools we offer tours of the Library and the campus and give today’s pupils a taster of being tomorrow’s students.

What pupils and teachers say about their visit

Thank you, I got a lot out of this.” [pupil]

This was really helpful, thank you SO much.” [pupil]

Thank you so much for arranging and helping with our visit to the Library this year.  The students and their teachers were delighted with the online access they were offered and I believe many of them found useful information for their EPQ projects.  It was also a valuable opportunity for them to experience a bit of real university life! Thank you very much for all your time and trouble.
We look forward to doing it all again next year
!” [teacher]
