Hey,

Is anyone else applying to Middlesex Uni? I'm applying for BA Illustration and I recently had an interview. I haven't have any confirmation as of yet but it was hinted to me that I've most likely been accepted.

So I decided to do some research on LJ and Facebook to see what students were really saying about Middlesex and...it's not good. A fair number of drop-outs, useless degrees, terrible accomodation and the whole system has gone to pot.

Does anyone have any experience to whether this is all true? Or is it a matter of what you put in you get out of it?

Thanks in advance.

Offers!

Hello!

I just got both of my offers today actually. One is from City University for the MA in International Politics and Human Rights, and the other is an MA in International Relations from the University of Kent at Brussels.

Does anyone have any opinions about either of these programmes? Right now I'm leaning towards City because I really don't want to leave London, and because the programme is more specialised towards what I want to do.

Any opinions or thoughts would be much appreciated!

Help!

Well, all the offers are in on my part, and I have to reply by the beginning of May... not to mention, I have to apply for student finance and all that jazz...

Truth is, I honestly don't know where to choose.

I'm torn between Edinburgh and Swansea - two totally different places I suppose! I live in Cardiff, so Edinburgh is a very very long way away for me. If it were closer, I'm sure I'd love to go there... but that, plus what I've heard about accommodation beyond 1st year being pretty expensive has put me off a little...

Basically, I need all the advice I can get. I'm so torn about it - on the one hand, I want to be closer to home, and Swansea would be ideal for that, but on the other, I feel as though I'm relinquishing a chance to go to a really really good University purely because it's so far away.

In short - I'm very confused, and any advice or knowledge about either University, particularly concerning English & German, would really help me out.

Two of the three universities I've applied to count for this community. Sooo... Hi!

I'm a U.S. citizen, applying for graduate programs overseas. I applied to Queen's University Belfast (and just received an offer for the MA in English (Modern Literary Studies) ...today!), and the University of Edinburgh. I know I still have a few weeks to go before I hear back from Edinburgh, and Queen's University in Belfast is actually my second choice (Trinity College in Dublin being the first because they have a program I nerd out over every time I talk about it)

...so until I hear from Dublin and Edinburgh--all focus is on Queen's University. I don't know where to start as far as what I'd like to know... so... does anyone have any kind of thoughts or helpful things about the universtiy an international student should know about?

Would it be silly to accept the offer right now... and notify admissions later if I decide to withdraw because I've gotten into another program? (Should I just wait until I've heard from all programs and made my ultimate decision?)

And as far as the University of Edinburgh... I got word three weeks ago from The University of Edinburgh that my applications were received, complete, and going to be considered... is there anyone who's been through this process and has any kind of idea of how long I should probably end up having to wait?

Thanks!

Overseas Fees Certificate

Hi-

I am not sure if this is the right place to ask, but most of the communities I could find were for graduate students only. I recently received an unconditional offer from the University of Edinburgh, and along with it, an Overseas Fees Certificate (I'm from the US and applied as an international student). The problem is, I'm not really sure how to fill it out. I obviously want to do it the right way so the nasty officials at customs don't detain me or I get my offer withdrawn. My family is paying for the tuition, but I will probably need student loans along the road for extras like accommodation, books, etc. I don't plan on being very extravagant, but was wondering how I would complete the form without knowing which loan companies I would be using. It's only March, I could still win the lottery! I e-mailed the financial department and the undergraduate admissions representative, but so far have had no reply in the past two weeks. Has anyone had any trouble filling these Certificates out, and if so, how did you do it, if you don't mind me asking? Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jaimie

Questions!
I just barely applied to Glasgow Caledonian University, Queen's University Belfast, and University of Edinburgh.. and I plan on adding University of Glasgow once I get my damned track number.. if I ever get it... ?
In fact, I feel really stupid for not putting Uni of Glasgow on the list to begin with..

Do I still have a good chance of getting into Caledonian and/or University of Glasgow, seeing as how I applied so late (and in the case of Uni of Glasgow.. not yet) ?
How long should I wait to get my welcome letter before I need to call UCAS and get it from them? I would call them now, but it's really expensive as I am in Russia.

Thank you much.

- A

someone told me it wasnt too late for me to apply at unis in england. i wanted to apply to manchester & salford. i have the application ready, i just need to submit it.. i have the reference and i wrote the personal statement (yeah i kinda put in the fact that im not from a super rich family and i mentioned the tragic past we have. but that all kinda relates to what i wanna go into - international relations)...

i was wondering, when is it too late for an intl student to apply? im in canada right now, so im applying as a canadian student. whens the cutoff date? i heard for us its not till june? is that weird.. or is it right?

also, what can i do to fund my stay? if i get in id definitely apply for a scholarship.. but oi, i dont think thatd be enough. i definitely want to go.

any suggestions??

Hey, have just stumbled upon this community as a person in need of a little <strike>lots of</strike> advice.

Basically, I've had all my offers in and I know that out of the six there are only two that I want to go to - either Exeter or Warwick university. I had initally decided that I was going to go to Exeter, having thought that Warwick were going to reject me (I only got the offer this morning!) but now that I've been offered a place by Warwick I've become really confused. Both of them have good and bad points but at the moment I really cannot decide between the two.

I love the campus at Warwick but I think Exeter is a nicer town than Conventry (no offence to anyone, I just like the countryside feel to it), so they are tied there, and both the courses are really excellent. I am literally in a deadlock here, I cannot get myself out of this quandary.

If anyone out there knows the universities, can offer me advice or anything, I would be so, so grateful.

Study Abroad

I'm going to apply for a place as a visiting student for 2007-08 at a UK university fairly soon (deadline's a month away), and I'm still not sure where.
I've worked my way down to a shortlist including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, St. Andrews and Oxford, but the questions just keep piling up.
Why? What? Where? How?
I'm looking to study modern history, with the possible addition of oriental languages and introductory and international law, as part of my bachelor of history at NTNU (Norwegian University of Nature and Science - yeah, I'm a Norwegian, if you hadn't already guessed ;)).

If there's anyone out there with something to share, then don't hesitate. Any views/experiences are veeery welcome.

I worry too much.
Sigh.

Hello :) and a question

*Waves*

Hello there, I'm Fiona, 17, final year of school in Scotland doing A-levels in biology, chemistry and maths(plus distance learning psychology but that doesn't count since I don't actually do any work for it). Just to make things awkward, I'm doing all of these in one year since I did Highers in 5th year. My school thinks this is a good idea. I don't since a) it means twice the work and I've spent too long being lazy and not working and b) it confuses the hell out of universitys who can't decide whether I'm getting A-level offers or Advanced Higher offers. But anyways, that's completely beside the point.

I've applied for 4 Vet med courses, 1 Vet science course(the same thing but without being able to practice at the end I think) and 1 Zoology course. So far I've got....

Glasgow - Zoology - Unconditional
Cambridge - Vet Med - Rejected (but I'm not too bothered since I was going to turn them down if I got an offer due to.....)
Edinburgh {Royal Dick Vet School} - Vet Med - B in chemistry and B in biology or maths :D
Glasgow - Vet Med - Interview on Monday
Royal Vet College - Vet Med - nothing
RVC - Vet Science - also nothing.

So my question is....has anyone else applied to the RVC and have you heard anything yet? I've not even had any confirmation of them receiving my application so I'm a little confused since I've heard from everyone else.

Also, whatever else happens I'm going to Edinburgh (as long as I get the grades obv) so does anyone know what the best accomodation to go for is? As in, reasonably close to Summerhall, the vet campus and the station (I live near Glasgow and will be going home a lot to see my horse, friends and go to gigs, as you do)?

Thank you :D

I have decided that I cannot live where I live anymore, I must get away as soon as possible.

I originally had my finished UCAS list, but I've decided to scratch my reach school that required 32 IB points, for ... something that's safer, but I also realize that few things can be considered a safety for me, as I received 30 IB points (...).

Anyway, I was wondering if you guys had any places to recommend that would be suitable to apply to? I've looked through ucas without much luck (is Goldsmith's insanely hard to get into? They only required 28 points for some combination of history and something else, but I figure they are pretty hard anyway). I'm applying for history and or religious studies. Preferably in the London area, but going outside is no problem at all.

Cross posted in ukuni, uni2006 & uni2007 (sorry).

Personal Statement

Ok, so after about 3 years working I have finally found the course I want to do at uni and I'm applying (yay for me). But I'm having so much trouble with my personal statement. Do you guys mind having a look at what I have so far and letting me know what you think? Thanks. The course is Creative Events: Art and Design. Basically Event Planning. This is my first draft:

"Throughout my life, I have had many different ideas of what I would be when I grew older, for example musician, teacher, astronaut etc. I often had difficulty deciding on just one thing to do but I knew that I wanted to be creative. I often said to friends and family that if I could find a job where I could be generally creative all day, that would be the job for me. That was one of my main reasons for not going directly to university after my A levels. I realised that it was a big commitment and that I needed to be certain about what I wanted to do.

My decision to go into event planning began while organising house parties. Many of my friends were not interested in nightclubs and so, with the permission of my mother, I started using our house to, once every few months, throw themed parties to allow everyone to have fun somewhere that they would all be comfortable and relaxed. This grew to be an almost essential part of our social lives especially when many of our group started travelling to various different universities and would only have a short amount of time in the holidays to spend time with people. As I was the natural organiser in our group and was often organising day trips I took on the responsibility of the parties. I had not realised how much hard work I would go on to put into the parties and how much I would learn from them. This included the many things that can go wrong throughout the party and how to prepare for them and also the creation of a group website allowing people to share photos and discuss various different parts of the parties.

After attempting to research what I would need to do to get into a career in event planning, I was directed towards the course at the University of Kent. I read through the leaflet that was presented to me and instantly knew that it was what I wanted to do. From all the information given, as “corny“ as it may sound, there is truly no one part of the course that interests me more than any other bit as I am so eager to learn everything about event planning.

When I was given the leaflet, I did not realise that my dedication was about to be tested as, after the person who ran my local drama group stepped down 6 weeks before a show, with little of the show started, I stepped in to organise the show. Unfortunately throughout this time I steadily became ill and it became increasingly difficult to continue. However, I was very determined and carried on with the organisation which led to a very successful show at the beginning of December 2006 from which we received an offer of sponsorship from Tesco's, Gravesend.

In terms of whether I am well suited for this course, I can honestly say that I have many of the qualities needed to succeed. I am a very determined person and I am willing to work hard for what I want. For example, I have a great love for playing the guitar but could not afford guitar lessons and so, I researched as much as I could on the internet and taught myself which has led to having the confidence to perform songs I have written myself in various shows. I also have great organisation skills and, ultimately, I enjoy organising things. I am very good at "thinking outside the box" and being prepared for any eventuality, I also get great joy in seeing people enjoy events that I have worked hard to prepare.

From this course I hope to get the skills needed to work in event planning and, eventually, start my own business and become successful in my field. This is my aim for the future and I will work so hard to achieve it. I cannot remember ever wanting anything more than this and I know that, given the opportunity, I can go on to achieve my goal."

I didn't expect to find a community specifically for applications for 2007 but here I am!

Hello, my name's Tom and I'm originally from Liverpool but I've lived in north Wales since I was about seven. I'm not doing A-Levels myself, I'm one of those silly people who decided that the International Baccalaureate would be a good idea. I rushed to get my UCAS all sent off by October 15th. Then I rushed and got my work sent off to Oxford by the 11th November and then some creative writing to East Anglia. I've been pretty successful so far with my applications:

Literature and History (UEA) - Conditional (33 IB points. 5 in History and English)
History (Liverpool) - Conditional (33 IB points. 6 in History)
English Literature with Creative Writing (UEA) - Conditional (35 IB points. 6 in English)
English Literature and History (Lancaster) - Conditional (30 IB points. 16 from my Higher Level subjects)

I've not heard anything from St. Andrews (English-Modern History). I've got a letter through the post this week inviting me down to Oxford (Mansfield. For English Language and Literature) for an interview which I'm thoroughly nervous about right now, yet oddly looking forward to it.

I'm surprised how well I've done so far considering UEA's first offer (Lit and History) was actually given to me incorrectly (35) which resulted in me fretting that my application was awful since they'd advertised 33 points in the prospectus. They did correct the offer about 2-3 weeks later with an apology though.

How's it going for everyone else?
