Philipp became interested in blockchains when studying the game theory of Bitcoin mining, then on to Ethereum where he became convinced of the possibilities of programmable money enabled by smart contracts. He is now working at SMG on Ethereum scaling, BRAID, and much more.

It is fair to say that Philipp is a generational talent. At just under 40, he is already a decorated Professor of Economics at Yale, and the winner of the 2024 John Bates Clark Medal, one of the highest awards in the field of economics.

MEV is fundamentally about control. The proposer has control of which transactions make it into blocks and which order they appear in. In other words MEV is all about censorship and reordering. The good news is that fixing this is possible! 1/5 I explain how in a new post:

We Fixed 1559! 🎉 A misspecification of EIP-1559’s update parameter is causing increased delays and higher gas fees. In SPEC-04, we suggest slowing down the base fee update parameter to fix this.
